Lol?
I dunno why people are complaining now since this has been a thing for Windows 8/8.1 too.

I'm going to retreat into a corner with things that I will only ever have to pay for once and sob unabashedly.

I really don't see any issue with this. Solitaire has many more game modes than just Klondyke, and daily achievements and so on, which makes it a lot bigger than the windows 7 version. It's essentially the Windows 8 version, so it really isn't news at all. It's just a banner in the bottom of the game, so you won't even see it if you just play klondyke anyways.

The ads in question aren't small banners that appear at the bottom of the screen while you play. They run over the full Solitaire window, some for 15 seconds and some for 30 seconds, and while they don't seem to pop up very often—in our quick and entirely unscientific testing, Wes was able to jump around in menus about 20 times and started a half-dozen games between them—they can't be aborted. And because I know it's bound to come up, no, you can't buy an ad-free experience with those in-game coins. They're strictly for unlocks.

We are talking about Microsoft Solitaire Collection? Maybe it's a regional thing or something, as I've not yet to see anything like that. I see a small banner at the bottom of the game type on the front screen, and then one on the side, when finishing a game.

Since I haven't upgraded to 10 I can't tell you from experience, only what the article says which is that they're incredibly intrusive.

At what point will consumers get fed up and actually switch operating systems?

If you are interested in the Windows 7 games, including Solitaire, just take a look here:

The funny thing that Win 10 is not free, it's just a free upgrade. You need to either have a Win 7/8/8.1 license, or you buy one to use Win 10 legally.
Or, being a Windows Insider, aka a beta tester, but that will mean you will get "Windows 11" betas pushed to your computer.

The thing that nobody mentions is that, as far as I can tell from playing the game and searching the web, the ads only occur if you use the new 'challenges' features. Just opening the program and playing a game of Klondike or whatever never triggers an ad to play, so you only get the new ads if you use the new features. I think that's fair.

Nothing is sacred, everything is permitted.
Now, jokes aside, like article says: "Windows 10 itself is free, so complaining too much about this might seem ungracious. But I think that perhaps what we're getting here is a flash of insight into exactly why it's free. Fair trade?"

Question: Do you expect "this game required DX12 to run. Choose if you want ads infested DX12, or $10 a month DX12 Premium"?
