Nothing is sacred, everything is permitted.

Now, jokes aside, like article says: "Windows 10 itself is free, so complaining too much about this might seem ungracious. But I think that perhaps what we're getting here is a flash of insight into exactly why it's free. Fair trade?"

Question: Do you expect "this game required DX12 to run. Choose if you want ads infested DX12, or $10 a month DX12 Premium"?

I dunno why people are complaining now since this has been a thing for Windows 8/8.1 too.

Well, Solitaire in W8 was optional, in W10 you install it by default, then you can uninstall it after you see it's F2P game.

A lot of people are probably going from Win 7 to Win 10 directly (myself included), and didn't realize this.

I really don't see any issue with this. Solitaire has many more game modes than just Klondyke, and daily achievements and so on, which makes it a lot bigger than the windows 7 version. It's essentially the Windows 8 version, so it really isn't news at all. It's just a banner in the bottom of the game, so you won't even see it if you just play klondyke anyways.

The ads in question aren't small banners that appear at the bottom of the screen while you play. They run over the full Solitaire window, some for 15 seconds and some for 30 seconds, and while they don't seem to pop up very often—in our quick and entirely unscientific testing, Wes was able to jump around in menus about 20 times and started a half-dozen games between them—they can't be aborted. And because I know it's bound to come up, no, you can't buy an ad-free experience with those in-game coins. They're strictly for unlocks.

We are talking about Microsoft Solitaire Collection? Maybe it's a regional thing or something, as I've not yet to see anything like that. I see a small banner at the bottom of the game type on the front screen, and then one on the side, when finishing a game.

Since I haven't upgraded to 10 I can't tell you from experience, only what the article says which is that they're incredibly intrusive.

Fair enough. I haven't noticed it (yet). Maybe it's because I've just tried it a few times, or that I'm using W10 Pro.

Check that pcgamer page, second picture is a car ad - as you can see, whole solitaire window is used to show it.

And what if in a year Windows will kindly show you ad everytime you'll want to use DirectX?

Because Solitaire alone is not big deal. What will be next - that's the big deal.

There's a difference between a free game that comes with the OS and use of a software library. If all DirectX games required ads, DirectX would no longer be a thing.

As for ads in free games, we're quite used to that already, aren't we?

Good thing they didn't take money for that start button thingy in Win8.
Pay 29.99$ to get the good ol' start button back! Pay and additional 79.99$ to put a smiling Bill Gates's face on it!

implying that you're gonna play solitaire on win10

Also, you probably didn't noticed, that M$ made big P2P network with PC where win10 was installed. I mean, just look at updates download options.

It had ads in Windows 8 as well, didn't bother me much when I decided to play a few games.

If you are interested in the Windows 7 games, including Solitaire, just take a look here:

The funny thing that Win 10 is not free, it's just a free upgrade. You need to either have a Win 7/8/8.1 license, or you buy one to use Win 10 legally.

Or, being a Windows Insider, aka a beta tester, but that will mean you will get "Windows 11" betas pushed to your computer.

Yup, that's also important detail.
And in a year, when you'll have to buy Win10, even after paying, you'll still get Solitaire with ads.

Love how everyone says "but windows 10 is free!" when you need a $200 OS to upgrade to it. This is just all bs scamming.

The thing that nobody mentions is that, as far as I can tell from playing the game and searching the web, the ads only occur if you use the new 'challenges' features. Just opening the program and playing a game of Klondike or whatever never triggers an ad to play, so you only get the new ads if you use the new features. I think that's fair.
