Yet another reason reinforcing why it's not generally worth it to subscribe to Humble Monthly

What does the in-game item have to do with HBM?

It was in the Humble Monthly bundle from January as a DLC. Link to thread

Also, happy cake day! :)

Ah, didn't really know that, and they don't mention it in the newsletter even. I don't see how a cosmetic DLC makes it not worth having HBM to be honest, in my opinion last few months have been quite good, Stellaris for June is also a great deal $$-wise.

Shad0WeN just meant in general. The HB monthlies are very great! No doubt about that! But the thing is that they often tend to bundle those games shortly after for a cheaper price. That makes one question whether it's worth it or not. And now giving away a DLC which was in a HB monthly just reinforces that feeling as Shad0WeN mentioned. :)

I understand the sentiment, but I highly doubt that the price will be cheaper and all the games are included. Take last few months, how would you get all that stuff for just 12?

I mean really, someone tell me if this exists, but I don't see it happening personally. Certain games do get bundled, and it has happened a few times recently that the ''main'' game they announce early goes on sale soon after the monthly is over, true. It happened with Vermintide, with a few others as well - but what about the rest of the games each month?

And now giving away a DLC which was in a HB monthly

This month’s lineup includes Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide (+DLC), The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, Project Cars, Mother Russia Bleeds, Neon Chrome, Jotun: Valhalla Edition, HoPiKo (Debut!), and a new Humble Original, Kimmy!

The bundle included 8 games, not including DLCs (which were never elaborated on past 'DLC', as the announcement above indicates: See also: 1 2). Outsider was a preorder cosmetic, rather than a proper DLC (in fact, if it used in-game activation instead of Steam activation, as most such cosmetics do, we presumably wouldn't even be getting angst over it now), and was thrown in as a special bonus. It has never been purchasable on its own, and was a nice bonus for the bundle, but presumably not one anyone used as a basis for evaluating the bundle's value.

That the devs have decided to finally give others a crack at it is a good thing, not a bad thing.
Say what you want about the merits of Monthlies on the whole, but using a preorder cosmetic that wasn't ever intended to be a feature of the monthly as a supporting element for such arguments is rather... curious. :P

This is just the icing on the cake. I found it very distasteful for them to take the early reveal & teaser game for the January Bundle (Vermintide) along with Jotun as well and then re-bundle the games themselves for half the price only 60 days later. This undermines trust in not only the product your are selling but also your brand. Here is the post with my thoughts at the time and I can't say that my feelings have changed.

I'm a bit confused over who is ''they'', the Vermintide and Jotun publishers?

I agree that it is a serious undermining of the product, but in the case of Vermintide I assume they wanted playerbase gains. My point was that I do not see how, let's say, if I bought last month's bundle, I will be able to get all those games within the next few months for less than the price of the monthly. Has that ever happened, that the entire monthly bundle was available within 1 or 2 months at a lower price?

They = Humble, for whom my criticism was aimed squarely at. It's mostly on them imo since they are the ones marketing and selling the Monthly bundles.

My point was that I do not see how, let's say, if I bought last month's bundle, I will be able to get all those games within the next few months for less than the price of the monthly.

Admittedly, that seems very unlikely. However, let's say I bought it primarily for Vermintide since that was the early reveal and the rest was just secondary to fill out the bundle. Should I feel better because I got some other mystery games thrown in (which I may not even find appealing) even though the re-bundling of Vermintide leaves a bad taste in my mouth? I think not. And Jotun following the same fate only makes things worse. That's just bad business and not something that I care to see happening. I informed them of such through support channels. Their response was something along the lines of "we will pass this feedback along to our Monthly Bundle team". Hopefully they will actually listen and not just sweep it under the rug.

In that sense you are perfectly right, I (for some reason) assumed we are thinking of the scenario I mention above, which is highly unlikely in the first place. However, seeing as they use the big reveal titles to encourage people to subscribe, having that kind of big discounts so soon doesn't make a lot of sense, 100% agreed. Let's hope they don't do it with Stellaris too, there is the Steam sale coming up soon(ish) so maybe HB will take it easy for a while?

I really, really hate requirements of either Twitter or Facebook. I don't have either, and don't plan on having either. So, no hat for me! :(

ETA: I guess I got the hat after all! The way the page was set up, it made it appear as if all three items had to be checked off, but I only had to do the one step and it sent me the email with the key. That was a nice surprise!:)
