Are you the Humblest Sekaiist on this V-Day?

Tier 1 - Faulty Milestones and all.
My Valentine funds are better put into this bundle. Goodbye chocolates, hello Tier 2 Hunies!
13 is my lucky number and this great bundle proves it: I'm going for 1 Tier 3! Dem Nekos must be mine.
Waiting to see the Steam Lunar New Year discounts first, then I'll decide on this one.
Roses are red / Violets are blue / This bundle is bittersweets / It has too many repeats.
Roses are red / Violets are blue / I won't commit / To buying it.

I'm occasionally tempted to buy VN's on sale, and thought about buying the $1 tier for fault, because it's highly rated. Then I looked at gameplay on YouTube and decided not to. I really can't relate to childish characters. It's unfortunately a problem of a lot of Japanese stuff.

Do you have any recommendation? I mean, something that doesn't have girls who look 10 year old and act 6, isn't focused on school life or on cardboard relationships?

Hi, came across your thread and I guess I can add some recs:
Narcissu (any): characters may look childish but for a reason - no spoiler- and they don't act so.
Lucy -The Eternity She Wished For- : good intro for typical high-rating VN that aint boob-fanservice
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc: dynamic gameplay and art w/ excellent plot

All above are Overwhelmingly Positive on steam too ;)

Just looking at the text in the screenshots on Steam kind of put me off Lucy and Danganronpa. But Narcissu 1st & 2nd is free, so I might check it out.

Ended up playing some Narcissu 1st. Chose the first translation (I have no idea what the difference between them is). The writing indeed feels better, but far as I got into it (which was somewhere in the prologue), it's just reading text line by line, pressing enter between them, and frankly reading a book is more comfortable and would go much faster for this text. (And there was still excessive use of ellipses, although not as bad as in other titles.)

Please check The House in Fata Morgana. Yes, there is one annoying girl in chapter 1 but apart from her the story is on another whole level than most VNs. There's a demo.

I second this. I don't think you can do better than The House in Fata Morgana if you want something that's non-animeish. It's my favorite VN. I also didn't find any of the characters annoying, they've all got a lot of depth.

Please don't chicken out. I really wanted your recommendations, not ones from 'real fans', because you seem to be in the same boat as me.

Thanks for the Lady Storyteller reference. What I got from looking at her list was that I need to play Kathy Rain, which I had installed and started but stopped early on, as happens with many games.

That led me to thinking that, instead, perhaps it's about time that I played Edna and Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes, which I won about 5 years ago. So I installed and started it, and I've got to say that just the intro and tutorial gave me more pleasure than any start of a VN likely ever would.

So my conclusion was: stick to adventure games. My personal favourite serious adult games are the Blackwell adventure games. Really, I have a lot of adventure games I've yet to finish or start, and while I'm sure a VN is easier to get through, I enjoy adventure game writing a lot better, at least with my VN limited experience.

(BTW, playing Harvey's New Eyes isn't going to be listed on my account, because I happened to start playing it on another account with Steam Family Sharing. Which might rub some SG people the wrong way. :)

I've done some escape rooms IRL, with my family, though the few escape games I played felt inferior to the hidden object adventures I've played. One which was nice because it was also a game/movie hybrid was MISSING: An Interactive Thriller - Episode One.

I backed The House of Da Vinci on Kickstarter. Started playing it on Android but got stuck early on (felt like a bug). Might play it again at a later date.

Got a reply from Steam support that Missing isn't available on the store. Looking at SteamDB it looks like that's indeed the case: It's listed by has no price for any region.

Edit: On the developer's Facebook page there's a message from the 25th of May 2016 that the company is closing and due to legal reason they're removing the game from stores. I'm glad I managed to get it during the short time is was available. (I bought it on both Steam and Google Play.)

I've encountered missing prices before. I think it happens for games where the developer haven't updated regional prices after Steam added new regions.

I've played them all and can say the 'meat' is in T2. Root Double and Sunrider are good.

Can't say amazing because it's reserved for very select few VNs namely Steins;Gate + 0 and Fate/Stay and CLANNAD.

Meh. But overall a good deal anyway.

Lies. There was only one unlock. On positive note, I don't actually own it, so still good

I was a little sad that there was only one bonus unlock, and that it was a game I owned already. On the upside, though, I really enjoyed that game and now I can give it away to someone else who hopefully will enjoy it just as much c:

Unlock is a repeat of Humble Sekai Project bundle...
They're going hard on re-bundling games today, aren't they? :(

Disappointed with the unlock, but it's still quite a good deal overall with the value of unbundled games totaled to around $100 (most of which are in my wishlist). It is not as good as the previous Sekai Project Bundle, though.

Too bad they only added Highway Blossoms, but whoever is interested in it should get it now, because I heard that they're going to add voice acting and they're gonna raise its price.

Permalink

It's nice and all that they're adding voice acting, but I can't imagine anyone willing to pay more for it after it's been a dollar on steam and bundled twice..

Permalink

I think they might add just more than voice acting, but I'm not sure. I forgot where I've read this :(

Very disappointing unlock tbh. They added only one game and it was $0.99 on steam a few days ago during the lunar sale. Not to mention it was in the Humble Sekai Project bundle a few months ago.

Could someone clarify something for me?

In these games, like Highway Blossoms, Root Double, fault, do you actually get to make choices and influence events in any way? Or is it just passively watching?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Root Double has multiple endings that depend on choices you make, but the main goal is to get the true ending. Can't speak for the other games as I haven't played them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Depends on the game. Highway Blossoms is kinetic, so no choices, just the story.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Root Double has choices, Highway Blossoms and the fault series not.
Root Double deserves to be bought at such a low price, it's an AAA vn that is definitely worth it.
Highway Blossoms despite being kinetic, has a really nice story.

Thanks for answering me. Root Double caught my eye, but I wanted to wait and see what would unlock on week 2 and then decide. I think I'll get Tier 2 then, I quite enjoy story-driven games with choices.

I am glad to be of help!

When you start it, be sure to play route A first (you get an initial selection between route A and B), because if you start with route B it might ruin a couple of plot twists for you.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I've beaten some so I can chime in.

Root Double is the best out of those tiers. It has multiple endings, the longest of them all.

Liberation Day is also good, but you might want to read its previous game first (free on Steam).

Fault milestone 1+2 leave reader in a cliffhanger. It's a text based so you only need to read

Thanks for the additional input.
In this type of games so far, I've played and enjoyed 'Tokyo Dark', for its variety of endings (11 in total) depending on your choices and actions. Root Double looks like it may be even better.
What's 'Liberation Day' predecessor? Sunrider Academy? I was actually thinking of trading or giving these away tbh, I don't care for strategy games, and these seem to feature strategy elements quite heavily. Or am I wrong?

Permalink

I think it's Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius.

Permalink

You can use 'Visual Novel' mode in-game so you don't need to play the strategy game.

Mask of Arcadius is the predecessor.
