OH MY GOD

Dream do come true.

"All the games you love

Hundreds of great games are already running natively on SteamOS. Watch for announcements in the coming weeks about all the AAA titles coming natively to SteamOS in 2014. Access the full Steam catalog of over nearly 3000 games and desktop software titles via in-home streaming."

Natively running games is great!
The other part is simply the idea of Nvidia shield made better and without the need of dedicated hardware. You must still have your pc on and connected on LAN,which can be a bugger..

Yeah was thinking that too
We'll see what steam has for us and how they'll do it.

I assume SteamOS will be based on Linux and you can run old games just fine via emulator. For newer games A LOT will depends on how much Steam is committed to help in the transition.

Besides, he didn't ask why should he use only SteamOS forever, only why should he want it. :)

Comment has been collapsed.

perhaps they are building SteamOS so that EVERY game will run on it, no emulators needed. The only reason moat games are windows only is because of what's in the OS right? SO wouldn't it make sense, since Linux is open source and what they are building on, to find what parts of windows that Linux and Mac don't already have and program them into SteamOS? I mean, how hard could it be for them to do? The only reason it hasn't been done yet is because no one really wants to take the time to try it right?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

How hard? Off you go, then, I want to see a complete, functional implementation of all common Windows APIs with all known quirks and at least 90% application compatibility for all software released in the last 20 years. You have six months.

Good luck with that, hundreds of people have been working on it for over 20 years.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not a programmer. All these different version of Linux out there, if the time put into them were used to cooperatively make one, wouldn't it make more sense? all that talent, surely they could make one fully fuctional free OS with all the combined features required to run all he games. That's all I was saying. Perhaps Steam had a team working to do just that? no need to be an asshole

It's.. nothing like that simple. The variety in Linux distros has nothing at all to do with compatibility with software written for other OSes. Diversity is a strength, not a weakness.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You see there are a lot of linux distros because they usually serve different purposes.
Most linux distros share the same core (linux kernel ) and just have a different interface ( desktop environments ).
It's like having a lot of cars with a V8 beneath and just a different body.
But even with that, creating a program with GUI is not hard, since most extend on x11.
Writing 3d apps is even easier, as they mostly use opengl apis, which are pretty platform independent.Even tough opengl apis are a hell to work with...

wine compatibility layer does it quite decently actually..
But still I hope steamOs is not just a wine wrapper( as most linux ports are )

Permalink

And it's taken 20 years to get what limited support Wine and the various forks and spinoffs have. It just is not easy or quick, no matter how many people and how much money you throw at it.

Comment has been collapsed.

Most likely if you want the SteamBox. Otherwise, might be as optional as running Win XP, Vista, 7 or even Ubuntu.
You should be happy about them giving options so you can choose the best. If you dont like it, dont use it. Simple as that... I did it with Windows long time ago, couldn't be happier since.

looks like steambox will just be used as streaming like Nvidia sheild. You still need your desktop power to play your games

It will run any Steam games available on Linux. For games that are Windows/Mac only, you need to stream them.

This is much more than what I expected. I already anticipated the in-home streaming thing, as they talked about Big Picture, but I didn't expected something like this.

Wow, just wow. And this is only the first of 3 announcements. Now, I do believe they are announcing Steambox (which will run Steam OS ofc).

My computer is a desk computer that it's on one side of the house while the living room is on the opposite side...so this helps me a lot as I've always refused to lay a 20-30 m HDMI cable all through the house. And that's SteamOS' only purpose...

Permalink

You don't need a high end pc for that, the second pc connected to TV is just a "Steam box" if I may call it that. The better PC is the one running the game and streaming it onto the crappy pc.

Comment has been collapsed.

It is nice, but having a OS that is for Steam alone will be pointless unless you buy a computer just for steam. Guess you could dual boot but it is a bit of hassle. If you want to surf the web while playing games will this be able to do that? only time will tell how this will play out.

There is also origin, desura, gog, etc games to worry about. so you will always need another OS to play that stuff.

Permalink

Yea there are still these questions I have as well... Gets more and more complexed as you wonder doesn't it?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Its funny because I have a PC just for gaming already, I only run Windows for gaming.

So this is great for some that want to rid of Windows for good.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But SteamOS is just Debian based GNU/Linux with Steam shell on top. You could already use Debian/Ubuntu/Mint if you did not want to use Windows. The only thing Steam4Linux can't do that "Steam integrated into Linux" will be able to do is streaming Windows games from the network source (and audio/video, of course, but you can do that outside of Steam in both Windows and Linux).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes but from what I am reading this will gather support for Linux gaming and natively support bigger games so its still really nice to see and a big step to getting gaming big on Linux.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm afraid steambox and steamos will just be dumbed down PC experience for console gamers. Imagine OS where the only browser is steam browser... or media player of choice is steam?

Not gonna work for most of us, if we'll have to install large parts of usual linux distro on top of it to make it fully functional. It will be easier to just use linux in the first place (as existing steam clients should get the same functionality, if I read correctly)

Sad, but true fact: Valve is trying to pouch the console gamers from Microsoft and Sony, and give them "dumbed down" computer for the living room.

I sure hope this encourages developers/publishers to pay more attention to Linux as a platform. Would love to see "Out now, windows and mac versions coming soon!" in game descriptions within 5 years. People probably won't give up their Windows until that happens, but I know a lot of us already boot into windows solely for steam.

If we ignore netbooks, low powered laptops, tablets and HTPCs then yes, this is absolutely useless!

If we consider the fact this will be a stripped down version of Linux suitable for all those devices I mentioned, then we could be onto something! I would hope that this will be tweaked and out perform almost any other distro out of the box when it comes to gaming on Steam.
