Saints Row 2 is a great game, but it's also a lot more serious than The Third or IV (a + for me, may be a - for other people)

I loved Saints Row 2, but mainly on consoles. I couldn't stand playing it on PC mainly due to the driving. But it's a fun game nonetheless and definitely worth playing.

I was in the same situation about a week ago and yesterday I finished the second game. I really liked it. To me it seemed a bit harder than the third and indeed more serious but that didn't stop from putting about 20 hours into it. So go ahead and start playing! Also from what I saw in the Saints Row IV you'll also meet characters from the second game so it would be nice to get the references if you already played it.

Haven't played Saints 3 or 4 but by the looks of them and watching lets play I think they are trash.. well thats Saints 4 what I think. But Saints 2 was soo much fun and it stuck to being a 'saints row' game, All about gangs and working your way from the bottom to the top

Eh, I have piles of consoles as well, I'm quite happy to play on those. Finding it is a problem, since I haven't seen copies for years.

I tell you what. I bought SR2 as part of a sale and didn't even plan to seriously play it, at least for now. I just launched it to see how different it is from SR3 and if there's any background story worth knowing before going back to The Third. I ended up abandoning my DOTA2 learning curve, my Black Ops 2 card farming and 3 demos I downloaded prior to SR2. And 1/3 of my sleeping hours on top of that. I have 87 hours played (that's from website, strangely my client says it's 92) and I'm sure I'll get well over 100.
First thing, it's poor port and I had to spin my CPU to exactly 3,2 GHz (X360 clock speed) to get rid of the slowdowns, meaning it's more power hungry than The Third.
Second, it's has some bugs, it crashes from time to time and I strongly recommend Gentelemn of The Row mod (installation is very simple), it fixes some major bugs and improves experience.
It's a rose with some thorns and if occasional crash to desktop (save often, especially while doing insurance fraud or browsing wardrobe) doesn't scare you off, it's very much worth playing.

Its one of the best sandbox games ever really, I have about that many hours, probably more, had to rebuy it on Steam to play though, old copy went wonky :-P.

You can activate that SR IV, you know.
Just saying.

Yes, its better then 3.
Make sure to get the fixes/patches.

The story is fun and there are a lot of jokes in SR3 you only get when you played 2. The engine is notably worse tho, everything is very clunky, the interface is not PC-optimized and some characters look pretty bad.
There are some missions which are a lot of fun tho.

Just make you you hunt out the user mod that lets you set modern resolutions. It's a great game though.

If you're playing vanilla SR2, I hope you like your SA-style sandboxes, because only then I'd recommend suffering through that horrendous port.
Apparently there's a mod everyone recommends for SR2, but then I also heard it adds/modifies a lot of ingame stuff, and I don't know if it's possible to use it only for framerate/crash fixes.

I was in a similar position (except I don't have IV :D), where I played 2 after finishing the Third. To be honest, I didn't see it as anything but a clunkier version of 3. There was slightly more character customisation, and a minigame where you fling poo at houses that I didn't see in 3, but other than that, it just seemed like a broken version of Saints Row: The Third (although I didn't play with any patches).

It literally had double the content and double the customization, plus the stroy was actually thought out and not a mess(THQ's fault but still...). The map was way better also(SR3's city is all the same really), NPC's were more unique for sure, odd stuff happened around every corner, more interiors and secret places to discover. A LOT of stuff was removed in SR3...
It might not have been as polished but it was much more fun once you got into it.

Seeing as how its the only really good one I say yes.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it or not, but SR2 is a continuation of SR1, so a lot of the story elements kind of get lost if you have no idea what they are talking about. With that said, it has a lot to offer, go for it.

the gap between the ending of Saints Row to Saints Row 2 is filled with the first story missions which explain pretty much everything that happened.
and actually coming to think about it, Saints Row 2 isn't much of a continue to the story of Saints Row, its basically what happened while the Saints Leader was in coma in the jail-house...

If on PC, I recommend not. It is a terrible port.

Just finished Saints Row: The Third earlier tonight along with The Trouble With Clones DLC. I want to play Saints Row IV, but while I managed to win it a week ago, the user gifting it told me he needs to get a replacement copy first as his Russian purchased copy is region locked and can only be activated within Russia. So yay for waiting.
Had this one sitting in the backlog for a while, since the Amazon THQ sale (and wish I knew the future so I could have given it away and waited for the Humble Deep Silver Bundle) and considering making a start on it while I play the waiting game. I have done a couple of missions before to see how well it would run, and didn't suffer any technical problems at the time, so that hopefully won't be a worry while playing.
