I'm planning on doing several reviews of underrated games on my YT channel and I am looking for some good titles. I want to focus on really good games that practically went unnoticed by a lot of people. I don't care about its Metacritic score or its score on steam. If there is a game out on steam and you think it deserves a to be noticed and should have a proper review please mention it.

I am currently working on a review for Harold. I plan on making one for The Inner World. And I might do one for Freedom Fall and The Weaponpgraphist.

EDIT: Just made up an poll about which rating system I should use for the reviews.

EDIT 2: Made a channel trailer asking for underrated steam games.

Journey of a Roach? Nobody knows it, nobody cares about it, but it's a really good game.

No, it's not famous at all. :P It's the first game series of Frictional Games, but people only know Amnesia and Soma, while Penumbra is their best game.

How? All it takes is a simple search by typing the BlazBlue word in the search bar. I even won one of the BlazBlue games years ago. Taokaka's voice is the epitome of cuteness.

I didn't know central fiction was released on steam already. Now i'm wondering if they would re release an extended version....

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I doubt it considering the financial issues they have been having seeing as no one wants to buy the BlazBlue games, it's so serious that they weren't able to bring English voice acting to their newest games which for me personally is a huge turn off. So yeah, don't expect it, not for a long while anyways.
In the meantime you should work on your perception of newly added games to steam, it's realy not that hard, out of the way or time consuming, just a suggestion if you realy care.

Not sure how "unknown" you'd like them to be, so I'm going to suggest:
Cosmic DJ - I was really expecting this game to blow up a few years ago because it's silly
Hue - finished it a few days ago, can't believe it's not more well known
Solitairica - fun little rougelike game based on solitaire
10,000,000 - I have no idea if this and its sequel are anywhere near popular, but I absolutely loved it
I'd say a few more titles but I think you might feel they're already too well known (for indie games) to be called "underrated"; I hope this helps nevertheless.

Hm, that depends on what your criteria are and where your cut offs are for those. Often enough if these topics arise people suggest the same already well known games with 500 reviews or even more. Far away from being unknown. Well, you can have a look at those (if they fall into your range):

Why am I dead at Sea
Wait - Extended
Our Darker Purpose - Well this one has already over 500 reviews for example -_-
Full Bore
Shu

There are more, but five should be enough. And other people are making suggestions too. And now I have to wonder why my review from Why Am I dead at Sea counts as a key although I have clearly bought it on Steam -_-

They recently changed the rules for how reviews for gift copies were counted, did you buy it as a gift first then add it to your library later?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yea, I figured that to be the problem as well. I understand the original idea behind this. Still it is kinda dumb for those cases where the account the game gets activated on is the same that bought it. Nothing I can do to change it. Too bad i can't influence the score of some great games I enjoyed.

Sunless Sea - lovecraftian, dark writing and atmosphere. WARNING: A lot of reading is involved. And I mean A LOT. It's 60% a gamebook and 40% a roguelike.

Cover Card Hunter- not enough people know about that game. It's not underrated in reviews (though it's got more than enough troll reviews on Steam that it's definitely well under what it should be), but definitely in the attention it has gotten.

'course, if you buy into and further spread the "omg thiz game is p2w!!!11" nonsense that the trolling players keep claiming, I will find you. And I will beat you over the head with Liam Neeson. True Story.

:P

That said, at 3,000 steam reviews, it's really only overlooked in terms of being an MMO; there are certainly more niche games available to cover on Steam. Still, it's free, so you can at least try it for your own enjoyment. :)

The Sea Will Claim Everything is one of my favorite games - very odd, with lots of strange characters and plenty of reading. A gentle, unusual game, sweet with a political side. It's an insanely-detailed static point and click - there are titles for every book, character notes for every mushroom and flower, and affectionate references everywhere. Positive reviews, in small numbers. The dev is one of the writers of The Talos Principle.

Monsters and Monocles Great Rogue-like top down shooter which follows Nuclear Throne style.
Guns, Gore & Cannoli This one got quite a lot positive reviews already, but I feel like something still missing, it deserves more awareness.

Remember Me - Very good cyberpunk game which went completely under radar at least for me.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Quite nice rpg fantasy game. Was quite quiet release I think
Risen franchise - I haven't played all three yet, but at least I loved the first game. Fantasy rpg again. Peculiar that I have never heard anyone anywhere even mentioning Risen games.
Styx: Master of Shadows - Another fantasy rpg from which I have never heard anything.
Of Orcs and Men - Just like Styx, never even heard of this one.

So many good games in this thread! I have one I have been playing that I really enjoy: Outland
It's a great platformer with tight control and beautiful art, and only 546 reviews.

Also I don't know if free games count, but I just played Fausts Alptraum. It's RPGMaker and can be very wordy so it's definitely not for everyone but worth checking out if you like the gerne imo.

Call of Juarez - old game but brilliant. The controls are a bit clunky. The story is very good (ending is too complicated though) and gameplay is nice. Quest varies nicely and you don't get bored quickly by doing the same over and over again :)
Epistory - very nice and charming game. Controls might be clunky sometimes but it's rather rare. Story is nice too although it might not seem like it at the beginning :)
The Last Door - great, great atmospheric games. Interesting story and beautiful pixel art <3
Quell - nice, relaxing casual puzzle game. Very simple idea but well executed. The puzzles are getting a bit harder after each level. Might get boring if you'd like to finish it quickly but really pleasant to solve 2-3 puzzles between other activities to relax :)
Hue - clever game. Really enjoyable and well made. Perfect timing in raising difficulty and adding new "features", perfect lenght of the game, not too long not too short - I didn't get bored even for a second :)
Dyscourse - controls are clunky but the game is pretty cool and quite funny :) Nothing innovative but still a pleasant game :)

+1 for The Last Door. I won it and loved every minute I spend on this game. Too bad season 2 was not as good as the first one :/

In what regard? Season 2 has longer episodes, even more detailed pixel art (for some maybe a minus), mostly logical puzzles, the same eerie atmosphere and an equally awesome soundtrack. I only found it difficult to get into it at the beginning since the protagonist changed.

But most of the lose ends are getting tied up and the story finds a good conclusion.

Puzzles and graphics were fine, I just couldn't get into the whole story. The change of protagonist didn't bother me, but I didn't like the atmosphere. It was more mysterious than horrific, I couldn't find that incredible tension from season 1.
But I'm not saying I didn't enjoy season 2. The whole Last Door serie is one of my favorite point&clicks :)
