The Bible Videogame: David Kickstarter

Even though I'm not exactly religious, I think the Bible has some stories which would be interesting to tell through a video game. However (as I know) all the Bible video games released were disastrous shipwrecks in the past, and I'm not entirely convinced about the quality of this one.

Anyway what do you guys think? Would you play it?

Looks meh. I think a Bible video game would work alright if it's made like AN ACTUAL GAME. Not another way to experience the Bible.

I'm curious as to how it'll turn out though.

Interesting idea, but what you said: these kinda things never turn out good (usually). With enough money spent on it, pretty epic things could come out of it (for instance crossing the split Red Sea in first person would be pretty awesome).

1st things first,I'm not religious, the game just stated its a copy of the elder scrolls in another world with lower quality,also... 10 episodes? seriously? the game is in episodes? LMAO NOPE,would never buy a game on episodes...even tho im not religious I actually like stories and games with super powers so it intrigues me,BUT DUH the reason....

I hate episodic games too but this one kind of makes sense. After all, each of these are separate stories in the bible. It's when one straight story gets chopped up into episodes that I hate it.

The only reason (IMO) that games based entirely on well-known books is that the player already knows how the story turns out. A lot of the drama of conflict is lost when you know how resolution will arrive. Without drama in the narrative, you'd better gave some truly stellar gameplay...

No sense.

Games are about GAMEPLAY. Surely theres plenty of room and potential on the medium for emerging, player created stories; But anything besides that, that is a story pre-created by the devs or such, the story is always secondary in a game. The whole point of a game is to play, not to see a story to the end. For all those afraid of spoilers in this case they can read the source, or watch a number of movies.

Unless the game is an RPG or Adventure, in which case the story and interactions can totally eclipse the elements of gameplay.

Can. And generally do. But theres a big question here that runs trough the industry (and even more amongst 'scholars'- damn, english ain't my main language) and that is if it should be like that.

Im not opposed to story after all, rpgs are my favorite genre(inside and outside digital) and some of my most desired features regards to how story could be shaped.
But it is counter to the whole medium a game being top and foremost about the story, leaving other parts behind. Many rpgs suffers from that, with derivative gameplay and fake 'you can influence the story'.

The only thing bugging me on both comments is putting narrative top and above gameplay in a game. I love great stories and settings so much theres a bunch of games i play solely because of it- but that shouldn't happen, those devs should had crafted a good game above all then weave a good story/setting with it.

That is not backed by any of the research I have read. From what I have seen research consistently shows that prior summery type knowledge of a story enhances or does not effect the enjoyment thereof.

I disagree. In many great stories, it doesn't matter what happens, but why it happens and what we can learn from it. Take Romeo and Juliet for instance. The play opens with the Chorus explaining everything that is about to unfold. The entire plot is right there in the first 14 lines. Lots of great writers do this. I would argue that what makes great story driven games are their ability to allow the player to manipulate the universe they play in. I would even go so far as to say that there weren't really any GREAT story based games until designers realized this. Compare a Final Fantasy game to the Mass Effect series. I'm not saying that Final Fantasy games are bad, but all you do as a player is progress through a completely scripted universe that the player has no direct control over. The story generally falls flat because...something something

In episode 5 you will slaughter random children, presumably in the fashion of the giant Kabuto from the game Giants: Citizen Kabuto.

And in episode 6 you'll try to murder your own kids, presumably like reverse style Binding of Isaac which would make it the actual Binding of Isaac :D

Yes the bible has some interesting stories to tell that could make good settings for a video game.
Why do most bible themed games suck? Because they try to preach. The kickstarter you linked does too and that's how I can tell that the game will be horrible.
A game based on the bible made by non religious game developers could turn out good but religiously themed games made by religious fundamentalists like this one will never be enjoyable.

So if I understand this correctly it's going to be a Bible platformer? Or was that just a test to see if the assets are good enough for the Skyrim style gameplay? The video isn't 100% clear about what the game will actually be.

It's gonna be a platformer (and hence it has lost my interest). Obviously it's not going to be a Skyrim-like game, as Skyrim had a budget of $85 million compared to the measly $35.000 they're asking for in the Kickstarter. It's just not possible, thats why there are very few games like Skyrim.

Bible Video games were always failures because the devs didn't understand what the public will enjoy the games always made on low budget and felt cheap- a cashgrab....
also about them saying that the game 100% true to the story - David didn't have a red hair....it was a mistranslated from ancient Hebrew....the red hair came from northern or western European ancestry....
in the bible there is the word that translate into electricity and peanuts(peanuts are from america)

Esau has red hair - "וַיֵּצֵא הָרִאשׁוֹן אַדְמוֹנִי" - The first (harishon) came out (vayazeh) red (admoni).

I don't know the verse that claims that David has red hair, but there are certainly characters in the bible with red hair.

It's 1 Sam 16:12: 'And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.”' "ruddy" meaning having red hair, but I've seen in the NIV they translate "admoniy" as "glowing with health"

"וַיִּשְׁלַח וַיְבִיאֵהוּ וְהוּא אַדְמוֹנִי, עִם-יְפֵה עֵינַיִם וְטוֹב רֹאִי" He sent them; they returned, and he (the boy) was red, with fair eyes and he was good to look upon.

So the same word is used, with the same grammatical phrasing. Now, the literal translation is, of course, red-ish (ruddy). I'm no expert on Christian bibles, but I do believe that the NIV is loosely based off of both the actual translation and the King James, but I do know that the King James bible is famous for embellishment and fancy wording. Make of that what you will, but in Judaism, King David is depicted, as well as Esau, as having red hair.

Lol, hardly. It takes a few words and a few symobisms from the book of Revelations, but those are seriously distorted to make the game.

Anyone remember that old bible game that was a reskin of one of the old Wolfenstein games? lol

It was called Super 3D Noah's Ark by the notorious Wisdom Tree, known for releasing many unlicensed games for the NES, SNES, Gameboy, Sega Genesis and PC.

It was hilarious! >_<

Also, I agree with the OP, while I'm an atheist myself, I have read the bible multiple times and I completely agree that some of the insane stories in the bible, especially the book of revelations, would transfer incredibly well into the medium of video games, if it were done well of course.

It would need to have a decent budget and some nice animation, the stories are already there, it just needs to be visualized properly.

I would love to see some of the stories done with the art style like the one Klei used for their hit game Don't Starve, I think that art style would be perfect for some of the crazier stories from the bible.

Why thank you.

Most of the time, when people hear that I'm an atheist, they always seem to think that either, I'm mad at god because of something that happened to me, or that I'm a Pagan that worships Satan...

In reality, neither of those actually make me an atheist, they both require me to believe in a god/the supernatural, which I don't because there's no evidence to support the claims/assertions made by people who do believe.

I live my life based on reality and what can be proven through reason and evidence, but I do really like reading fantastical stories, which the bible is full of.

I might not believe the same things that theists do, but I can appreciate a good story! :D

That's really sad if the atheists that you know are really like that... Because they're not atheists if they believe any god exists to punch in the face. o_O

The hate mostly comes from people fearing what they don't understand, IMHO.

I've just grown really tired of being called a Satan worshiper because I don't go to church or pray etc.

It's 2014, the age of information, people should learn to think more critically about the things they choose to believe in.

Fair play to them, I wish them luck.

Just one thing leaves me perplexed. From their Kickstarter page:

"A game for families and gamers alike"

"My house full of kids couldn't be more excited about this game"

How can you let your kids play a game where people get:

  • Eaten alive by worms (Acts 12:23)

  • A tent peg driven through their heads (Judges 4:18-21)

  • Trampled by horses and then eaten alilve by dogs (2 Kings 9:30-37)

  • Have their guts spilled out (Acts 1:18)

  • Burned alive (Leviticus 10:1-2), (Numbers 16:35), (Psalm 21:9 and 140:10), (Isaiah 47:13-14 and 24:6), (2 Kings 1:10, 12)

Wow, they really like burning people alive in that book. Will there be a lot of burning people alive in this game?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

haha actually I don't believe in sheltering kids from all the "bad things", the sooner they face them the better they can prepare for them.

It's only due to luck that they've born to an age (unlike in the medieval times) and location where is no war, plagues and everyday death (although its still a thing in most parts of the world). You should read more history (and by that I mean TRUE history) and you'll see that anything depicted in the Bible isn't that extreme at all.

Although I agree, the term "video game for the family" is stupid and there's no such thing. It clearly shows that the person who wrote it hasn't got a clue about video games in general.

That's right: even more recently than the medieval times, just 70 years ago we had World War II; right here where I live now, people were dropping like flies, getting hanged and executed in public squares and so on.

But if you make a videogame about that it will be given a 21+ rating, and be banned in Germany and Australia at the very least.

Jeremiah 52:10-11

The king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and he also slaughtered all the princes of Judah in Riblah. Then he blinded the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him with bronze fetters and brought him to Babylon and put him in prison until the day of his death.

Don't forget murdering women and children by the score!

Isaiah 13:15-18

Anyone who is found will be thrust through, And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword. Their little ones also will be dashed to pieces Before their eyes; Their houses will be plundered And their wives ravished. Behold, I am going to stir up the Medes against them, Who will not value silver or take pleasure in gold.

That could really work actually, but it would mean having to offer alternate dialogue options (and potentially minor branches of outcome) which they would never go for.

Another big falling point of such religious games is that they always overplay the positive scenes and always completely curb or cut out the negative scenes. These guys claim they want the tales to stay true to the originals but I doubt they would be able to make a 'family friendly' videogame from christian mythos, unless they are very selective with which stories they pick.
