Defiance doesn't seem much about levels...yet, gonna be free soon.

I love the "logic" of so many people in the MMO community that a game being f2p instantly means it's inferior. It's just not the case. Having played almost every sub based MMO out there at least for a month if not more, they all have the exact same issues that people cite as being reasons to avoid f2p mmos. In the past, the only advantage p2play was a lack of cash shops and microtransactions. That as well is no longer the case. Look at every single sub based MMO launching now, and even ones that have come out the last couple years. They launch with cash shops.
Comment has been collapsed.
Funny you say that Defiance has a cash shop and from what the devs said its staying the same + a monthly optional sub, which grants higher xp rates and more character slots. Nothing game breaking really.
So yeah people just like to jump on the f2p = p2w thing way to much, also this game is 90% PvE, 10% PVP, so it would not matter much anyways...
Comment has been collapsed.
Yup, though in Defiance's defense, it wasn't launched with a sub, and as you said it's almost strictly pve so a cash shop is totally fine in my eyes. I wanted to love it, as I love coop focused games (which it should have been) but the broken and lacking social features and UI obviously aimed at filthy console peasants really turned me off. I'll probably give it a fourth try when it goes f2p for real in June.

I actually like that its a casual console port, I know it sounds crazy but this is the type of game I like to lay back with a controller and mic if I am playing with friends.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, I think it's a perfect game to have a console port of. If I could play it on a console, I would. I just wish that they made the UI more friendly to PC players, and put in the must have features that it's missing.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah they should do that but for me a 360 controller and PC does alright in this situation.
Maybe an update will introduce a better PC experience.

Maybe if season 2 of the show does well, and the f2p change brings more people and thus more money from the shop, more work will go into fleshing out the game. I'd love for it to become a staple of my friends and I. It has the potential to be it, just hasn't realised it quite yet.

They need to make the season 2 missions less repetitive I think, if they do that they will have a winner.

are there even mmos out there where you dont have to grind levels? except for mobas obviously
i guess you could try out hearthstone, i mean there are levels in this game but skill and knowledge in this game are obviously way more important since its a card game
maybe even guild wars 1, you can reach the max level in some hours and gear yourself in few days, you only grind for like cosmetics
Comment has been collapsed.
Guild Wars 2 is a grind-fest, what the hell? And even after reaching max level, you grind for materials and stuff like that. People waste hours upon hours grinding for materials to make their own armours and weapons, especially legendary ones. Don't tell me GW2 is not a grind-fest. I played GW2 since Beta, so I know from experience.

The genre has a few names, ARTS (Action Real Time Strategy), Dota-styled and even Hero Brawler. MOBA is just the most common term because that's what League of Legends originally referred itself as.

SWTOR. Only around 50-60 levels. All about storyline. Fully voiced. Great graphics. Very fun.

+1. I wish it had started ftp, would have had a larger player base.
Comment has been collapsed.
Definitely. They need to bring down the sub price I think. That or make ftp more fun. It's only worth it if you sub, but it's really amazing.

Fuck, man, as someone who just resubscribed (the limited character customisation was the thing that got me), I'd fucking love slower XP gain. I just left Coruscant and I'm already overlevelling everything.

+1
I can't think of any F2P model I've ever seen which is more annoying. The game itself is great, but the F2P model just turns people away.

Phantasy Star Online 2
The game is an action rpg with very modern 3d action game style combat. You can air combo enemies, parry, do all sorts of crazy shit, etc. It's really fun and the boss fights are great.
As for grinding, I like the way they handle it. Basically, EVERYTHING (well, except one secret optional dungeon) in the game can be seen in 3 or 4 hours. Everything is divided up into difficulty levels (normal, hard, very hard, etc.), and each difficulty setting counts for 20 levels (normal = levels 1-20, hard = 20-40, etc.). You can reach level 20, which will allow you to see every single environment and boss fight, in about 3 or 4 hours, which is pretty damn fast.
Really, the only reason to grind is because you enjoy replaying the game (it's VERY replayable) and to unlock bonuses like the extra difficulties (which are VERY incremental in challenge level, so you won't feel like your missing much if you don't unlock them) and other stuff like time attack modes, challenges quests, costumes, etc.
The game is in Japanese only, but there's an English patch that translates EVERYTHING. And it's free to play. Game has great character customization, combat, boss fights, etc. I really recommend it.

Don't really see how. Like I said, in terms of environments/enemies/bosses/classes, you can see everything the game has to offer in about 4 hours or so. The game never really takes any interesting content and says "YOU CAN'T HAVE THIS TILL YOU GRIND FOR 30 HOURS". You can play the game on and off for a few play sessions every few monthes and still see just about everything and have as much fun as a dedicated player would.
I mean you CAN grind, if you want to. But the game never actually forces you to grind if you want to see a particular environment or fight a particular boss. Technically I guess you could say it "revolves" around grinding, because of course the game is meant to be super replayable and have lots of content to last people for monthes, but it rarely if ever uses grinding as a true means of progression.

DayZ isnt exactly MMO but just MO but i think its what your looking for. its not about the levels at all. you keep yourself busy until you find something and the game makes you very curious at the level that even if you see a shitty barn and it is 1-2 minutes away from you and not even in your way you'll go explore it. and if you feel frisky there is always the hardcore mode with a ton of zombies which makes you even more curious cause you'll need a firearm+the right bullets for it or youll die for sure

Not much fun without a Guild though and it's not an easy game to socialize in.

GW2 is one of the biggest grind-fests ever. Not so much about level as it is about materials and legendaries.

EVE Online. There are no levels. Skills? They train in real time. Gear? Buy it. All you need in the game is money (ISK) and there are just an astronomical amount of ways to earn it. You can mine asteroids, run missions for NPCs, become a daytrader, blow up NPC pirates, blow up real pirates, explore the untouched reaches of space, micromanage planets to gather resources from them, haul goods from one end of space to another, fight in Faction Warfare, hold people up for ransom, etc. The game is all about freedom of choice. If you want, I can toss you a 21 day free trial. With that, rather than dropping the 20 dollars on a steam game, you subscribe to the game for a month, and this nets me 2 months of game time, which is pretty bitchin.

The problem with EVE is you have to love PVP, the best ships, are only available to be used in PVP space, last I checked. You can spend 6 months saving up in game money, and loose it in 5 minutes, because some pirate just felt like making someone have a bad day.
I found it stressful, but your mileage may vary.

Heavy PVE element... HAHAHAHAHAHA too bad you can be in high sec, running PVE missions, and still get ganked. The game is all PVP grief. Anyone who tries to pitch the game as being pve friendly is just trying to get you ganked. Want to mine in 1.0 sec? You get ganked. Want to run missions in 0.8 sec against NPCs? You get ganked. It's one big massive grief fest filled with people who get off on watching others suffer.
No thanks.

If I can't fly a Mothership in Highsec, there's a problem.

The Secret World
-no level, you just grinding for skills.
-play for the story (seriously it's really good, all voiced too).
-quests are unique and hard sometimes, like "listen to this Morse code and decode it".
-Party dungeons isn't a necessity, but really fun.
-Pay to play like GW2.

Correction: It is a 1-time purchase. Pay2Play is more subscription terms.

Love the game, the launch was horrible, but it has come SO far, in terms of dealing with lag, and other things that I truly find it a joy to play. I just came back after a years of being away, and I am not playing any other game for the past few weeks, it really is a blast, can't recommend anything higher.

I liked Star Trek Online, but my opinion might be biased because I love Star Trek.
Still, free to play, not at all pay 2 win to enjoy it, you obviously level up and get bigger, better ships, but things kinda just unlock as you play the story missions (which, by the way, are worth listening to/reading).

If you have a PSP, 3DS or WiiU, I'd recommend Monster Hunter. You don't grind for levels, you just advance ranks, which does increase the challenge. You only grind for equipment, and that plays a role in your success, but is not that important as it is in traditional MMORPGs. Also, your reflexes and skills will be your best weapon against monsters.
I don't know if this is something that you'll like, as you seem to like "point and click" games, and Monster Hunter ar Action games. But I still recommend them, because I did try it on PSP (MH Freedom Unite) and I ended up with 1500+ hours of gameplay. Shame that the games are not in PC in English, that would be awesome :\

Well, I'll try my luck with an unusual proposition. It is not exactly a MMO but it may still be fun for you. Game is called Puzzle Pirates. There are different servers with different settings concerning the "Free to play". I think the monthly subscription servers are uninteresting for you. I played on one of the so called "Dubloon Server". A part of the game is cut out and you need badges (those you buy in-game with dubloons) to be able to play them. The dubloons you can either buy with real money or you trade your gold you get from roaming the sea in the bank. The rates are created by the players so if the server has lot of active players they are quite cheap and a badge holds for 30 log-in days. You can still play the game without dubloons since most of the puzzles have a free day of the week. Other than some content its only cosmetic stuff. Also the playerbase isn't too big. I played on Opal and there were at most time only 20-30 people online which is hard at the limit. The others servers should have a bit more players around 50-100 which will make the game make more interesting. After all of the drawbacks I will come to the gameplay:
You are (obviously) a pirate and your "goal" is to get richer and better looking. Everything you do in the game beside moving from one point to another and talking to others is done by a mini-game called puzzle. Example: You want to roam around on the sea with some other players. The smallest ship has 7 player slots. One of you is navigating (puzzle), one is pumping water out of the ship (puzzle), one is repairing the holes (puzzle), two are making the sails (puzzle), one is loading the cannons (puzzle) and is doing nothing because he is lazy. Depending on their performance you get bonus on your ship like how fast it sails. This is especially important in combat (turn-based) where you get larger damage and need moves to navigate. You can also sail alone with bots but you only get the minimum number needed to control the ship. Despite the first few tries in a puzzle where you get explained the basics and then the more complicated details your performance is solely based on your skill. Someone playing the game for one week can be better than someone playing for 2 years. So there are actually no levels. There are counter for how often you have performed a puzzle and one for your average performance on that puzzle (last x tries, in comparison to the rest of the playership) so others can evaluate you.
As unlockable you could count the additional content which you can get after you traded your first gold for dubloons (also buying your own ship and house). So basically you don't grind for levels but you are doing the same thing over and over again and you are grinding for gold which you use to buy some dubloons and a lot of unnecessary stuff just to look better. And you get a lot of loot which you can wear for optics or place in your house (if you have one; I think you always have a barrack or something like that).
So yeah, lot of texts and your probably need to give it a try for one or two days to understand what I'm talking about and if there are still servers populated enough for the bigger events and if you can live with the dubloon servers. But all in all I found it a fun experience.

Haha, sunk 4 years of my life to this game. Used to sell PoE for $$$ by the boatload, the game is on a major decline but I hear expanding to mobile has helped their server populations (I haven't personally logged on for years, though). Get halfway decent at poker and you'll never want for in-game currency, but selling PoE isn't really worth it anymore. Overall, great game with a (usually) fantastic community.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hm, I only played on german Opal which wasn't that populated. I could live with the PoE-Dubloons exchange rate. It was around 2000 I think. One good trip to Atlantis normally brought you enough gold. But with low player numbers it is quite hard to achieve that since you need atleast 30 people. Well, maybe I will return a bit again if I run out of games ...
Comment has been collapsed.
Unfortunately, I really don't think it's worth your time. The "golden age" of the game peaked nearly 7-8 years ago (fresh on the heels of the pirate fad sparked by Pirates of the Caribbean), but now all data points to consistent population decline each and every year. It's an old concept on an even older programming language (java). It's difficult to innovate for a company so small, especially since they are focusing on other projects like Spiral Knights.
A shame to be sure, for it was a truly great game. But, these things can't last forever and popularity fades.

Guild Wars 2 > 'Living World' may be a gimmick to some, but there's always a new (big>>>huge) event on the horizon to keep you busy; gear-grind is minimal as it's about min/maxing for both pve and pvp, not gating that much; Combat aimed towards teamplay by mixing attacks from players; Almost free-to-play.
LotRo > oldie but if you're into actual mmoRPG games, it's one of the few to even consider; top lvl dungeon content is fairly limited and hasn't existed much for ages, for good and/or bad, competitively; solid base and friendly players for the most part; Game based on teamplay; each class has the option to shine; NO PVP for non-subscribers; Hobbits(!); skirmishes (1>12 on-demand instances); freemium but a single purchase gets you the possibility to unlock a LOT of content which will be yours to keep.
If you do not mind a monthly sub > Final Fantasy XIV.

u have to lvl up every item u have. Urslef dont have lvls, ur items have. U can go play all the maps and stuff untill u get some tier stuff, when u get it u have to farm and lvl stuff up so u can get the next tier and so on..
I would say its grind dependent, but just on a unusual way

As far as I've seen, LoL is not an MMO, and Monster Hunter is not an MMO.

I'm waiting for ArcheAge, which is a korean mmo. I launched more than a year ago there in Asia and now is being ported to the west. It is in alpha now, a buyable alpha, but it will be free to play or with a sub/month.
Here is the vod that convinced me:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxyiwXjNiPw
Seems that it has a lot of things to do, and they were lvl cap in 20 hours or so. It has a lot to discover and i love that. Watch it.

I would like unlockables or loot still, I just don't want a game that requires a month of grinding your core level just to hit end game in which case the previous 50-100 levels was supposed to be a story which I didn't care for.
Games which I feel meet my criteria and i've played but didn't stick to or still play just not much are - Mabinogi, League of Legends, Salem, monster hunter, and that's about it. Also from the other mmo thread I will be giving away just 1 of the daily packs (which ever one has the most for 10$). As for this thread i'll just ask the person what they want from steam for 20$ or less. Thanks.
