For me its:
1.- The Legend of Heroes, Trails in the sky
2.- Ittle Dew
3.- The Last Remnant
No.1 I've seen it very infrequently, but 2 and 3 pop up more regularly, so they hurt a bit more =P

Stardew Valley
Infinifactory
And recently unbox
Been on an unlucky run lately :( but take the good with the bad. I always look out for GTA San Andreas giveaways, I loved that game on the ps2 and sadly don't have my console anymore. May end up buying it when it goes on sale

1) Styx: Master of Shadows
1) Since i've just learned Styx is considered AAA game :O I'm changing it with Renowned Explorers: International Society :)
2) Knee Deep
3) Death to Spies: Moment of Truth
It was tough choice because there are so many games that would fit the criteria so I've just picked the games that were massively given away at some point and I failed to win any of them I^v^I

This is getting fascinating. It's so interesting how some people are generous enough to help other out in topics like this.
Makes me feel good for a change that others are being made happy.
Keep up the good feelings here. I'm sure some of us need it.

Gotta love how many AAA games are mentioned in this non-AAA thread. Like Styx, developed by a studio of UbiSoft employees with offices on three different continents, published by a company two decades old and big enough to be on the stock market.

There isn't really a thing like "AA" though. AAA means high-budget title released through a large corporation. Everything else is indie as in independently developed/funded/published outside the known large corporations. There is no exact definition, but neither are more categories beyond those two.

I disagree. It just isn't defined in the gaming industry, mostly because the market is always in fluctuation and AA rarely had a larger market share. But some few years ago, when AAA stumbled, mid range was actually doing pretty well. Till indies ate them up. Anyway, I wouldn't consider Styx to be a AAA production, by any definition that I'm familiar with.

most are pretty clear, but what do you view "The Witness" as? i'm torn and can't decide whether that fits or not. Braid certainly fell under indie, but with witness i'm not so sure. Additionally "Talos Principle" is another semi-tough one (though i'd say this one swings AAA).
edit: to be clear i own both of these already, not asking for my own list, just curious what you consider them.

That is what Golwar above described as "AA" or mid-range. Difficult to tell, that is for sure. CroTeam is probably one of the biggest indie developer companies with quite the funding (CD Projekt Red has more money though), but Devolver is turning into a decent-sized publisher.

I get where you are coming from that there is no need for another category but the term AA is undeniably in use and I think most people get the gist without further explaination. After giving it some more thought I think the way we coregamers use the term AAA is actually midleading because for most people AAA rather implies quality than the way something was financed. And since (if I'm not mistaken) the term originally comes from credit ratings it's only naturally that people use AA for big and good games that don't quite meet the expectations associated with AAA games.
