Only 8 months ago I got my first gaming pc. When I build it I did choice to install Windows 7 64 on it instead of Windows 8 because it supossed to be better for gaming. (I read this on several forums so just believed it). Now Windows is offering a free update to 10 should I do it or not? I do have quite a few old/older games as I like them. Will my pc and my games still work properly if I update?

Its not stupid. Whenever you access a website it shows your IP, the time you visited, your user agent, and how many times per day you enter the website. It doesn't seem that 'dangerous' but I guess you won't be that happy knowing some random dude on the internet can geolocate you.
Just a little example of "privacy" without talking about the OS.

The world is not Black and White. Your argument its very simplistic and implies that there are only two choices; use the internet and loss privacy, or don't use the internet and keep your privacy.
The world is not so simple man, there is a grayscale in every human action, and I consider that "black and white" recommendations as yours are not constructive or helpful, they seem extracted from a fatalist and conformist philosophical base.
Don't you think its better to complain(in a proactive way) against those privacy policies?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Dude, i would only complain against privacy policies if they would hurt me in any way. Sure, we should complain about absurd policies. Now, if they had to withdraw every policy because SOMEONE(s) gets offended by it, there would be NO policy and that's simply shit.
Yeah, i'm a simplist in this subject and i believe the use of personal info by some company is valid because that moves the economy, protects peace(sometimes) and help us too(sometimes).
Well, about the complaining in a proactive way, i would agree with you if the right phrase would be "criticize, in a proactive way, those privacy policies".

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sadly, the use of the word "complaint" is highly extended in the business world, is not coincidence that the companies use the famous "complaint boxes" to receive both, complaints and criticism. I understand what you said, the information, is the new currency of this age in my opinion. Anyway, I don't agree in your point about these policies protecting peace, if a government of X country really wants to protect and EXTEND peace in their territory, they need to invest in education, but its not only about throwing money to schools, its about developing better education systems that adapts and INTEGRATES the poor and most vulnerable sections of their populace without any kind of stratification.
An educated society wont need their personal info exposed to achieve peace.
In Norway for example, "Police in Norway fired their guns only twice last year – and no one was hurt" http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/norways-police-only-fired-two-bullets-last-year--and-no-one-died-10374662.html
That's an example of an educated society achieving peace. Of couse, peace is a subjective term, there will always going to be psychopaths here and there, and bad things will happen because that's part of the human condition.
I don't pretend you to agree with me, it's clear that our ideological and philosophic bases are different.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

the protection of peace comes when the info is used against those psychopaths or criminals, not to wage war and terror, or something. I think you misunderstood me. And before you say that criminals can disappear with better education(i agree), there's always those crazy rich guys who go in a rampage because they have nothing to do.

Certainly, crime prevention using personal data from a mentally ill person can help. Sadly, at least in my country (Mexico) the security institutions are deeply corrupted and they use your data against you. I will not be so worried about my personal info if the agencies weren't corrupted. So in an Ideal world, what you propose can be very helpful to prevent crimes.

I don't think so, Windows 10 is just a patched and improved version of Windows 8. It's what Win 8 was supposed to be.

For a gaming PC you're pretty much going to have to if you want to play new stuff. Just like Vista did with DX10, they're making DX12 exclusive. Sooner or later there are going to be games that could run on your hardware but can't due to you not using a DX12 compatible system.

While is will be DX12 exclusive, I will be curious to see how well they are able to bully game makers into using it. They know the numbers of people still using Win7 that will distrust MS and don't want to cut off a large portion of their sales by excluding them by letting MS try to force everyone to switch to 10. There are just too many people that won't do it.

I am wondering this too. There are also a lot of people using graphics hardware that is incapable of DX12, so any exclusives would force people to upgrade their hardware.

Why I won't get it

-I might prefer to wait for it to be "mature"
-win8 works wonders on my settup, any and all problems I've had so far (almost) are all solved already. A new OS might reintroduce some headaches.
-My system is probably nearly as optimized as it gets for what I have, a new OS might introduce headaches here too
-It'd cost me a whole 24hours to re-setup everything

Reasons to get it

-free?
-newer
-great new features, for me the multiple desktop spaces would be AWESOME. I don't need the start button anymore though, I've adapted and made my own system which is better.

All in all, I plan on getting a pc in the next 5 years anyways, so I'll keep "lovely" win8

Even for computer wizards installing a new OS is a pain. It's not that it is super hard to do, but it takes so much time and you need to get used to it all, which takes time. If you've had your pc for a while, chances are you know exactly where to click and can navigate anywhere really quickly. A new OS might ruin that (it's not a big point, but if you mess a lot with game files, then being quick can save a lot of time).

Personally I won't update. I'm gonna wait until it is a bit older and any major problems that pop up (and problems will pop up) are fixed. I think when windows 8 was just released it was a pain for gamers, over time it became better, but I'm kind of scared that it will happen again.

Windows 10 still has not reached RTM, this means that anyone who installs it will got and keylogger which currently has proven that it is in the preview version. Which was not true?
And something interesting, here is how webopedia define keylogger http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/K/keylogger.html. As you can see "Some keylogger programs will also record any e-mail addresses you use and Web site URLs you visit..So in short, exactly how I disorient someone?

From OP: "Now Windows is offering a free update to 10 should I do it or not?"
So, the question is about the normal version, and you are speaking about the Insider Version.
And some info about the "keylogger":

First of all, you agreed to this when you install the Preview version. It's a really jerk move, to sign up for testing and not provide the telemetry data in return.

I answered precisely and clearly on the question of the author. And it shows even in your quote, namely the author asks for "Now" not when the final version coming out or two months or something else. And for this moment - "Now", now you can install version of Windows 10 with keylogger.

And even more, for now telemetry in the Preview, which includes a keylogger, most likely / but can not be sure yet, at least I do not work for them and I do not have such information /will not be in the final version, but Microsoft will continue to gather information. What information they will continue to gather has not been defined, but they will at a minimum look at what you're doing so that they can target advertising their paid users. It won't be a keylogger /in the strict sense of the word/, but it will including looking at everything you search for on your computer, on the Internet, which applications you use.

And regarding your last sentence, who is exactly jerk here? Users who helping them for free to make their paid product better and for gratitude they record all your passwords, what websites you visit, when and what you're talking with your friends. Yes you're right, testers are such ingrates.

I don't really understand for what exactly. For an average user the worst the big companies can do is sell their info to advertisement resellers, so you see personalised ads everywhere, and may have spam in your email.
Yes, sucks to be a product, but with a simple adblock you literally cannot even tell that this even happens.

I mean it's not like a Google armed elite commando is gonna bust in your house and force you to use Google+ just because they know who you are and where do you live.

I see you live in a European Union country, this also applies to me.
So if the police want access to this same information / email, friend, etc. /, they must obtain permission from the court. Is not it like that? This protection is to ensure nobody can misuse our personal information.
And at the same time we say it's OK for companies to collect this information and even do not mind to sell to advertising companies? I personally do not agree.
This is a big problem, if companies have that power now, what will happen in a few years?

I am using the insider preview and it works fine for me. However if you have concerns, it may be worth pointing out that you have a whole year to decide and upgrade. So you will not use anything if you are not upgrading on the very first day.
Also, upgrading from Win7 is more like a complete reinstall of everything, so you may want to consider doing it when you actually have time.

If you have concerns about privacy, I hope you use no Google services (including Android devices) and especially not Facebook. You may want to uninstall Steam too, as it collects data about your PC and installed applications (though it asks you about it).

If you are already on Win8/8.1 there is no reason to not upgrade. (unless you have a killer app that doesn't work on it yet - for example I could imagine a streamer would want to wait and make sure his screen capture software still works on 10 (but as said before if it works on 8, it most likely works on 10)).

Now for 7... I'm not sure, it seems to be the last windows version where YOU (kinda) have control over (that's just how I feel about it). So one might consider going with it for the next 10 or so years. There probably will be no disadvantage apart from maybe rarely a game where you can only select the 2nd best shadow or texture option (I call it the console setting) due to lack of dx12.
