Some of the Team PvP FPS games that I most enjoyed:
Goldeneye (1997)
Quake 3 Arena (1999)
Unreal Tournament/GOTY (1999-2000)
Perfect Dark (2000)
Command & Conquer Renegade (2002) <- My favorite
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territories (2003)
Star Wars Battlefront (2004)
Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2005)

I've mostly been playing co-op and MMO since then, and no other more recent Team PVP shooter games come to mind as having really drawn my positive attentions (Other than Murder Miners (2014), but that's all but dead now.) Though I am looking forward to Murder Miners X, the currently-being-developed sequel. ^.^)

I did try Team Fortress 2 (2007), and couldn't stand it. :X
Similarly, I found the Call of Duty games to be profoundly dissatisfying in their own right, even before you factor in that (Wolfeinstein aside) I find WW2 a profoundly boring setting for a game.
Likewise, not at all a fan of the Halo games. :X

Left4Dead2 (2009) has some decent online play, but it's limited and awkward, and I'm already burnt out on it.

//

Outside of FPS/TPS, I've been enjoying Brawlhalla and Rocket League, which both have Team PvP functionality, though their bugs and issues sorta drive me up the wall on a regular basis [especially for Brawlhalla, where the devs have made it clear that greed is a much strong motivation for them than quality assurance].

So, give me your best Team PvP recommendation, which ideally is

  • NOT a WW2 game
  • NOT a Call of Duty or similar franchise game, a Halo game, or a Valve game.
  • NOT a MOBA
  • NOT couch/local multiplayer only / has working online servers
  • On any platform- I'm not picky. :)

I've heard good things about Verdun, so I'm especially keen on information on that (as well as your opinions on the recent Battlefront game, for obvious reasons. ~.^)

The best player versus player is that player versus players ITSELF stop playing computer games go out and try to be more succesful at life compared to the player in you who wants to play video games. Accept Jesus as your savior. If you want to be versus something choose the devil and stop using computer because its sin since the founder of computer was gay.

Mind you, he's not kidding. This user pulls this regularly, and has indicated he's entirely serious about it [which could of course mean he's simply a very dedicated troll, but I'm not sure the nuance matters in the least]. He's even outright harassed and attacked others over such matters.

If you seriously feel that what he offered was a constructive comment, please don't offer idle, half-committed comments in support of it, and rather, be forthright about your views. Because as is, I can only assume you're entirely serious, as well.

Well, I don't agree with his comment, at all, to be precise. But I did find it funny enough to post the "idle" comment. I don't really care whether he's a troll or actually being serious since this is internet, get used to people talking something you won't like. So, I might not agree with him, but I do not have anything against the person. Nor do I have anything against you, I actually agree with the fact that his comment wasn't constructive. Plain and simple: it was funny to me.

Oh, I've a friend that likes Dirty Bomb, I shoulda thought of that sooner. Definitely gonna ask him about it, thanks.
Had Toxikk on my to-play list, forgot about it while waiting for the free version to release. :P
Installing it now. :D [Though the negative reviews are a bit concerning in their scope. :( ]

Chivalry.. it looked decent, but I recall that I kinda got turned off by the specifics in the criticisms of it, and eventually dropped it from my games I was interested in 'cause of that. But no, medieval FPS-style games are actually especially intriguing- I think they could really add a lot of depth to the gameplay with the setting, if done right. I'll go give it another look. :)

I wasn't aware Insurgency had competitive multiplayer, I got it solely for the cooperative play, and never looked at its specs past that- ha. :'P

Thanks for the great suggestions! ^.^

Yeah, it's kinda hard to find FPS with that "arena" vibe that the ones you listed had... or I'm simply not aware of them. Definitely an interesting thread, hopefully some other people will suggest some other good titles. Oh, and I have my eyes on Verdun too, but didn't have a chance to play it yet, so no input from me there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Maybe as addition HAWKEN (a bit far stretched, but definitely an interesting game)...

Well, arena vibe is my go-to, but I loved the distinct strategic and tactical elements of the "battlefield"-minded Wolfenstein and Battlefront games even more. (For some reason, the CoD games always felt far more shallow and awkward to me, and I just never clicked to them the same way.) C&C Renegade was the absolute best, 'cause you had to juggle so much in the way of teamwork and class-selection strategy, the maps felt calculated in design, the vehicles felt integral to the experience (unlike, say, Halo), and the classes all felt very distinct and balanced (till the game servers became nothing but hackers, at least).
Just, loved everything about that game, when it was at its best. :X
Honestly, it likely had its share of flaws as well, but without any other games that give a vibe similar to it, it's really hard to make a reasonable quality comparison- the unique flavor it has is just too compelling, letting it really stand out. I'd really love something similar to pop up at some point.. :X

Not really the ideal way to play it, but it does make for some nice nostalgia-filled split-screen couch PvP every now and then. ^.^

Contagion is actually already installed, and next on my [PvP] to-play list. :D
Wow. Had my eye on Planetside 2 before, but totally missed the fact that it was F2P. Whoops!
It looks delicious, adding it to the install queue now. :)

Counter-Strike 1.6 / CSS / GO

NOT a Call of Duty or similar franchise game, a Halo game, or a Valve game.

:3
Already burnt through all the Valve games- CS didn't appeal to me any more than CoD or TF2 did, unfortunately. :(
Put another way, the Half-Life and Left4Dead games are the only Valve games I like, other than Portal 2 (and of course Portal 1 for getting the Portal Gun in Half-life 2, which is just awesome). :P

I do like Cube and Cube Zero, though Hypercube wasn't all that impressive. Have my eye on Citadel 'cause of it. :)

And I actually only liked the second Portal game, which felt more like a fully developed, calculated puzzle game. The first one felt too much like an action/twitch-heavy tech demo to me. :X It was still good when it was good, but I regularly found myself underwhelmed by the depth of its puzzles (which I felt more often relied on comboing portal activations, than calculating the ideal approach to dealing with a set of obstacles) :X
Also, Portal 2 has a co-op mode, which totally makes it that much better. ^.^ ((Which is also why Half Life: Decay, for the PS2, is the definitive Half-Life 1 version- the "Decay" mode was a puzzle-heavy campaign co-op mode that ran parallel to the core campaign (much like Blue Shift and Opposing Force did) It was quite enjoyable, imo. :D))

I'm still not entirely sure which direction Magnetic goes, but it's one I've my eye on (Talos Principle and Anti-Chamber look far more to my tastes, however, so I've mostly been direction my attentions toward them). I do love gravity effects, though, so there's that going for it. ^.^

But yeah, Planetside 2 really does look great. Going to hit Contagion, since I already planned to do that [and it's a SG win, so better to give it my attentions sooner rather than later], but Planetside'll be next up on the queue. :D

If you like these kind of games you should look into Antichamber (just saw you mentioned that), Attractio, Magrunner and Project Temporality too, if you haven't already. The Turing Test also looks promising.

Yep, got Magrunner on GOG. :D
Ended up getting PT from a bundle, but I'm still not sure if it's to my tastes- I tend to not like character-duplication puzzle games.
Attractio is hovering around there with Magnetic (though it seems to be a bit more active-play, from what I've heard, so I'm leaning against it), and Turing Test.. I watched the gameplay of it, and it didn't click for me; Moreso, the story and atmosphere especially seemed very weak to me. :X
Well, seems popular enough, so I guess it's down to a matter of taste. :)

Zero is the prequel to the first film, but was released third. Hypercube was basically not related at all, and just rehashed the first film in a different setting, rather than adding anything new to the plot or plot concepts, and felt pretty sloppily presented.
Zero is the only one I'd call a legitimately decent film of the lot- the first film mostly relied on the strength of its concept to carry its appeal, its rewatch factor isn't all that high. Zero builds on the story of the first film to really add depth to it.

And yeah, Citadel feels a bit rough still, but, y'know, take what we can get [and I literally just won it off SG a couple of minutes ago, even. :'P].

Portal 1 felt rushed, like they were dropping basic concepts, and then moving on to the next puzzle. To me, it ended up being a lot of "solve this, then jump a lot, then solve this," rather than offering a strongly cohesive puzzle design in each room. Portal 2 took more time crafting the puzzles to make sure all the pieces of each puzzle really fit together. Basically, I just felt P2 was a lot more polished. :P

Talos seems to easily be the most interesting-looking one I don't have yet. ^.^

 I've been looking through the Planetside classes, and they seem like they're fun. I'm almost certainly going to be primary-ing infiltrator, though, given my predilection toward both snipe and stealth play, assuming it plays to my usual expectations. ^.^
But, the other classes do look interesting enough that I'll probably be splitting my attentions among them every so often. :)

NOT couch/local multiplayer only / has working online servers

I read this part, but if you ever need a good couch-multiplayer, be it versus or coop - try out Towerfall Ascension. It's incredibly fun... and made me sad for not having online :(
Similar-ish game with online feature is Duck Game
Chivalry is great and a lot of fun, just expect to fail a lot if you're new - I constantly get murdered by more experienced players, but the game is still fun, and if you can play with only friends it removed the skill level differences.
Keep an eye out on Gang Beasts - not the serious kind of pvp, but it has / will have online multiplayer
I personally haven't played Insurgency but friends like it, would worth a try for you as well I think.

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, I've a ton of couch multiplayer games as-is (including Towerfall ^.^), so I don't need any help in that regard. :)
Specifically trying to get some online PvP into my "diet" now, and not having paid too much attention to it in recent years, it's something I could definitely use outside input on. :)

Gang Beasts is definitely on my radar (I even traded for the yogcast skins from when it was in a humble bundle, in case those were in fact exclusive, so I'm prepped for, y'know, actually getting a copy of the actual game :'P). Arena brawlers and kart racers are probably the two genres I find most easy to get into, for PvP, so I try to keep a keen eye out for those games. :)

I'm still a bit on-the-fence about Duck Game, the previews make it look as though it may be a bit too hectic and confusing for me. :X

Here are some that come into my mind:

  • Evolve (now F2P and while it's monster vs. team it' still PvP)
  • Loadout (also F2P) - played it for a good while and enjoyed it (don't know how active the community still is...)
  • Insurgency
  • Chivalry
  • Sir, you are being hunted (Seems to be a funny shooter not as much team vs. team though)
  • E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy - seems cool, didn't get around to play it yet, but seems to be somewhat dead...

Some from my wishlist I have an eye on:

  • Natural Selection II - maybe a bit outdated but looks interesting to me
  • Battleborn (apparently this might go F2P in the future)

I also always enjoyed the more tactical shooters from Tom Clancy series but never played any of the newer ones in PvP

  • Tom Clancy’s The Division
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six® Siege
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon® Wildlands (pre-order)

Best co-op pvp? Dark Souls :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

  • Competitive / PvP is any mode where one or more players faces off against one or more players. There may or may not also be environmental or AI challenges hindering the players.
  • Co-op is a mode where two or more players face off against AI or environmental challenges, with no opposing players. (Ex)
  • Competitive Co-op is a niche subgenre of co-op where two or more players face off against an AI or environmental challenges, while also competing against other players (or their main teammates) [and usually just for end score]. (Ex, Ex)
  • Team Competitive / Team PvP is a subgenre of PvP where one group of players faces off against another group of players [and may or may not also have environmental or AI challenges]. (Ex, the games mentioned in the OP, and most any typical online-multiplayer FPS game.)

Given that this thread is about Team PvP [though Co-op is totally "my jam"], I'm going to hafta ask for clarification as to which genre you actually were referring to. ^.^

Technically all of them except competitive co-op :D Summon some red phantoms, or get invaded, that's no 1. Get a friendly summon, beat bosses? That's no 2. Get several friendly summons, and some not so friendly, there you have team co-op/pvp (The first game actually has a dedicated arena for it too, but you should supply your own teammates and opponents for the best experience) So..., yeah :)

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Overwatch yet. It's my current favourite team pvp. It does have a bit of MOBA elements, namely the characters are heroes with unique abilities, including ultimates.

You can play it casual or competitive. It is also a major esport. Check out some of the events here
http://www.gosugamers.net/overwatch/events/

Current halloween special event has 4player coop PVE which is pretty fun. During the Rio Olympics, there was Lucio Ball event which is basically Rocket League but using the Lucio hero instead of cars.

Platforms: PC/PSN/XBL

Huh. Those special events sure sound fun, it's a pity they sound like they aren't permanent additions.

I was a bit turned off of Overwatch from the beta gameplay I saw, but looking at more recent gameplay, it actually looks a more interesting than the polished TF2-style game I took it to be. I'm not sure it's actually to my tastes, but it's one I'll definitely give further consideration.

Still, the level design and lack of objective focus means it's still not really in the vein of the battlefield shooters I like, and it seems less straightforward skill+teamplay based, like the arena shooters I like.
Really still comes across more like the CoD and TF2 gameplay that I don't favor. :X

At the very least, I'll try and keep an eye out for a free play period of it. ^.^

Comment has been collapsed.

Not sure what sort of objective focus you're after but each map in OW has very simple objectives such as control points and escorting missions. The objectives also show up in the game's hud so you're never lost in the maps.

It's common for OW to be compared with TF2. Just like how Paladins in compared to OW. But there are enough differences between the games that keep them distinct.
Maybe check out the streams on twitch too.

Edit: paladins is f2p on steam. Maybe give that a shot?

The approach they took irks me (as I understand it). "Anyone that already had the then-free game, got to keep the game" [regardless of if they were free or subscription players].
Makes sense to not suicide on maintaining their community, and sure, it's good to reward your playerbase.
But a first-come, first-serve without any indication? That's a capricious bit of scorn that only ended up turning me off the game to a degree. :/
[I mean, sure, I could view it as missing a free promotional giveaway, but the fact that I was aware of the game, and simply didn't give it a shot due to the state of my computer at the time.. well, stings.
Put another way, if a developer suddenly and without warning increased the retail price of their aging, non-F2P game by $10 , wouldn't that feel awkward as well?]

I hear its popularity/active user-base has only gone downhill since then, as well- so y'know, even if I did have a reasonable chance to get a hold of the game, it may no longer be as compelling a thing by that point.

No one seemed to mention World of Tanks. It is nice game but the playerbase is REALLY toxic and quite young (well their mentality seems to be quite immature) I suppose. Also the matchmaking isn't the best of it's kind but if you play casually or get in a clan and start clanwars you can enjoy the game. I give the game credit since it can be played for free even on a bit higher tank tiers (though if you want to proceed your tank tiers fast and don't want to play with the lower ones to get money you kind of need to buy some premium time). Normal matches are 15 vs 15, you can make a platoon of 2-3 people with your friends and join these games or you can go alone.

And from the same genre: Warthunder. Never truly understood the tank part in the game (yeah, it has more realistic damage model but oh boy your crew gets injured in every second shots or something) but the planes are really well done and fun to play. Can't say much about the size of the playerbase since I don't play the game anymore.

I don't get the appeal of 3D tank games. :P With one exception, I haven't ever seen one that even looked remotely interesting to me.
But yeah, I've known people that played WoT, from what I saw of it, it seemed.. as you said.
So double reason for me not to ever really try it. :P

I'm picky enough with flight games that it's a losing battle trying to find one that meets what I'd favor. Warthunder definitely doesn't look like one to fit that mold. :X
