So after rediscovering some of my old favorite songs on youtube today, I got to wondering, as usual, what SG users think had the best decade of music.
I started with the 1960's as many of us might not like or have heard of any before outside of Fallout games. But you can list an earlier one if you want.

Personally, I loved the 1980's. I feel it was more about the music then. The bands had more originality and heart. Very rarely did you hear a cover song back then.

So, lets hear yours and any opinions on them.

And maybe even share a few of your favorites from that decade.

I like music from most decades but I think I'll go with the 70s. I mean:

  • Bob Dylan - Blood on the tracks
  • David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
  • Led Zeppelin - III, IV and Houses of Holy
  • Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you were here & The Wall
  • The Clash - London Calling
  • Rush - 2012
  • Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

Not to mention Sex Pistols, Joy Division, The Wailers, Neil Young, Queen...

Can't vote - Missing 30s-40s. Big band was the good shit, man.
Although if I had to choose, I guess 2010s since I like electronic music of the current era.

Depends on taste I suppose - I'm not too fond of 80s and 90s electronic music and prefer the more... "crisp" sound of modern sound design in today's electronic music. It's kind of more than just the melodies I like, but the entire complexity and design of the audio engineering. Could be because I've spent quite some time in the past trying my hand at music production, especially electronic... kinda puts things in a different perspective when you can somewhat understand the work involved in a music track. :P

Examples of music I enjoy:

Absolutely, yeah. Must have been quite different with analog instruments - These days you just download the VST you need and you're set. :P

I'm gonna go with 1970's, that era saw the beginnings of punk rock and the first signs of psychobilly, if I'm not mistaken. Then again, BZFOS (my favourite band) didn't exist until 2002, so... :D

Late 60s thru early 80s saw am amazing proliferation of unique styles and much creativity. There's just so much that I can't even begin to make a list. I'll just leave this one here because I have been revisiting it lately.

Elaborating: i think that during all history of music there were bad and good examples, as the market is fundamentally corrupt and quality does not necessarily sells. So, my pick is seriously "all of them" as the poll is flawed by the age of the users, mostly born in the '90s, where "music wasn't shit like today, good old times".
I remember quite clearly that there was a lot of shit back in the days (substitute "days" as the decade of your choice) and today's kids will remember fondly today's music while berating the future generations.

Also decades are fundamentally different from what genres were popular and what evolved most, i'd say that hard rock got the best during the '70 while metal and hip hop evolved best during the '80s/'90s. Today, i think that electronic music is getting lots of new interesting subgenres (like - unironically - vaporwave, chillwave, psyambient and chillout), while other genres are stuck without any real innovation.

Basically, choose your own music and enjoy it.

*Chillout was strong enough as far back as the early 2000s to occasionally have a labelled section in music stores (lol... music stores...)
Otherwise, yeah, completely agree. :)

Actually it was present as early as the '90s with Aphex Twin and Brian Eno who basically invented the ambient genre and its relative subgenres, but yeah, electronic non mainstream music gained the most traction during the 2000s. It's a shame that most of electronic is all David Guetta, Skrillex and Avicii because i think that there are tons of artists who are producing every day new stuff and creating new sounds that really add to the genre, making something for everybody. It's an underappreciated genre with popularity that varies wildly between countries, like in Germany and Netherlands where there is a strong presence in clubs and festivals, while here in Italy this music is virtually unheard of.

A good place to start for ambient, chillout and this kind of underground electronic music is The Psychedelic Muse youtube channel, where he shares everyday new albums and stuff from high quality artists. Among my favourites are Shpongle, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Solar Fields (he made the Mirror's Edge soundtrack by the way), Connect.Ohm and Entheogenic.

Aphex Twin

Things like this are why I can't decide between 90s or 2000s. :)

My go-to site for info on non-metal music was Discogs for a long time. Not a music news site at all, but great for looking up obscure releases. Good to see that their electronic section at least seems to be growing each decade. (Bottom left.)

Missing the option "all of them", because... well, I think all decades had good and bad music. I can't really say this or that decade had the best music. They all had great music. Also, there are some great bands/singers with big longevity, that span many decades. Finally, great songs are timeless, they really don't belong to any decade.

Well, growing up in 90's makes it an easy choice for me... :)
Although my interest in music in general started with 60's, 70's and 80's music.
Still, nothing beats Pearl Jam. The only shame is they're virtually unknown in Russia, which makes my chances of ever seeing them live pretty slim. Well, at least I've seen Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day and Skunk Anansie live, which doesn't quite makes up for that but is good nonetheless. :)

Very difficult as I absolutely love old school (80s) thrash metal, but a lot of the best metal/prog instrumental bands I've encountered have been all post 2000's.

Had to vote with my little head and go for the 80's.

90s... no wait, 2000s, no... 80s... or 70-- no, not the 70s... well, maybe... or the 1700s, oh, but then there's also the 40s! And the 30s and 20s... 50s and 60s lumped together were pretty good... 2010s is still happening, but I don't think it's quite up to par with some of the others.

But yeah, probably 90s*.
