Interesting - I have no reason to learn this language at the time (I'm not weeb enough to find appeal in learning the language, and nobody here speaks the language either soooo)... But this is an interesting idea. I'll be watching from the sidelines. Don't mind me.

This is really an awesome project! i really would like to join because i started to learn it but... better not. I mean, i am also learning english and i'm not fluent so I would interfere more than help in Discord

Well, OP did say:
Mind you, you don't have to be good in english too as english is not my first language
So I think you're fine right? Besides, your English is excellent. ^^

I am also not good (far from fluent) in english. I hope this will be a safe and fun place for everyone to learn. I'm also started to learn it again, what suck is that i don't have a buddy to learn and practice with. Obviously i start from pretty much zero again. So yeah, if you change your mind i'll be happy to welcome you to this journey :)

oh, thanks very much, I missed that last sentence XD. Well... I changed my mind so... I'm looking forward for this project!
And today I just learned I need use the letter/word > I < in upper case :) .
And well... i guess this gonna be a great place to make friends and practice!

You don't need to know a secondary language to learn the one you want. You just need a decent teacher. One of the things that slows down a language-learners progress is his or her attempt to "translate" the language being learned. That is not how you learned your first language, and it is a very inefficient way to learn your second. It is better to just "absorb" the new language, just as a child does, without trying to analyze it, classify it, or translate it. That is the reason why "Immersion" is such an effective way to learn a new language. Only the new language is used, so the student is pushed to begin thinking in the new language.

+1 for our moderator d(T^T)b thank you
I hope everyone in this project will be able to speak/talk with confident first. While gradually getting better at grammar, vocabulary, structure, writing, reading and so on. I think by teaching you also learning. Through practice everyone might also become a decent teacher. :)

immersion doesnt work well on me (wanted to say at all, but that is not true). I guess at some age it does not work that well.

true true. demo. I know quite few gaikokujin's that are living here for 5 or even 10+ years around and speaking even less than me. I would say it is combination of many factors that need to be met to be able to achieve some fluency by immersion

Sadly I'm Passive Bilingual
I can understand basic Japanese when I hear it but struggle when it comes to speaking and reading/writing.
This is due to me half assing my learning and not practicing enough in all areas of the language. Also not having anyone to talk to in Japanese and feeling self-conscious when chatting on Japanese websites.
The idea of conversing with others and not being afraid that what I type is borderline jibberish peaks my interest.
If you start it I'm in.

This won't be something too serious. I want everybody who joined to be able to speak/learn freely without fear no matter how fluent they are. Of course to be able to fluently speak and understand we need to learn harder, but it's all up to each person. :)
Also not having anyone to talk to in Japanese and feeling self-conscious when chatting on Japanese websites.
This is my main problem with learning japanese which i aim to tackle through this project.
Great! Will contact you further :D

There's already quite a few discord channels made for those wanting to learn Japanese:

Thanks for this information :)
Sadly, my ISP won't allow it's consumer to access reddit. In fact every ISP in my country do this. :(
In 2013 and 2014, about 10 sites including Vimeo, Reddit, Imgur, and more are censored as the government accused them of hosting content that includes nudity. In 2017, Telegram was blocked, as it was being used to spread "radical and terrorist propaganda." Source
I can still access them with Opera though it is very VERY slow :|

Cool! you already know some :D
Don't feel that way, i too need to learn from basic again since my japanese already lost in time. We learn together, little by little. A friend told me that to become fluent is just a matter of time. Meaning doesn't matter at what level you are right now if you use your time to practice more you will be better right? Even just a little, baby step.
Everyone on every level are welcome to join. So what do you say? :)

A bunch of weaboos speaking gibberish in japanese?
Count me in
It seems like an interesting idea, you have to force yourself to practice any language and fear of mistakes is usually the biggest problem...

Kuratisu = Curtis, that's how my teacher translated the name at least. Took courses in high school, was about the only good thing about the school I went too. Sadly, never having anyone to talk to after just led to me forgetting everything. It's happened with a few languages now. English isn't even my native tongue, but it's really all I speak now because it's all I've spoken to others for ages.

Oh Curtis, i think it's Kaatisu but i might be wrong

That's what usually happens in school right? :\

Yeah, it is sad that all that time we put to learn one skill and it's gone because we never use it. That's why my aim would be to talk first, doesn't matter if it's wrong, just talk. Let's face it, if we are left alone in a foreign country we will be asking(speaking) to locals.

Indeed, would be nice if I just remembered everything I've learned over the years.
I had originally planned on taking part in the student exchange program, seeing what it was like to be in Japan, then possibly moving their. Was really into Japanese culture at the time (not just anime ><), but yah, life has it's ways of getting in the way of your plans at times. As for the spelling of name, I actually made a mistake, was Karatisu, had to look up Katakana symbols to remember, pretty sad I remember how to spell it in Katakana, but not how it was pronounced or spelt in Romaji, lol. Teacher was Japanese, so I just went with it. See in google search it says it should be Katisu though, so honestly, have no idea.

That's a missed opportunity there mate :(. My teacher said if you're in student exchange program in japan for a year. Your japanese will be fluent enough as far as speaking goes.
Yeah, me too. For some reason as i am getting older, i am more into western/british tv show. As for anime i'm more picky.

That's because I keep coming up with things I want to do. Last thing I tried was starting a blog and YouTube channel with benchmarks of the Ryzen 3 2200G I bought for that. Then the hard drive with the videos I recorded died (naturally with no backup) and my wife decided that we need a new puppy (as if an old dog and two kids aren't enough), which killed my little free time. So that project is on indefinite hold.
Now I'm looking into selling asset flips on Steam. Got to give the dark side a try.
As for Japanese, I did back Koe on Kickstarter.

I'm interested, I've been wanting to start learning Japanese for a few years but I struggle to find the motivation, I did manage to learn English largely on my own so I know that it is a doable task, I'm just lazy.
Warning, I know next to nothing about the language other than a few things I've read about it online and some words I picked from watching anime.

OMG yes, I know the very basics but I want to become at least proficient enough to speak with a native.

Yes, I am interested.
I only know of those complex Chinese characters because of Chinese, and a few school setting phrases because of anime.
Really need to teach myself Japanese one day, properly.

I took some japanese in college but could not continue past entry level because I wasn't majoring in it
sounds like a fun idea

speaking is so much easier than writing, it's the right place to start

I'm in, tho Im not even a begginer for now :)
Is it the right way to start a steam group? maybe discord or something else would be better ha?

what it's gonna look like? you don't have a teaching plan, I doubt you even have categorized list of sources/materials/methods. seems like a chat for whoever speaks basic Japanese with occasional advises on random questions while others don't understand a word and more proficient learners are bored.

Coming from this i had an idea to make steamgroup or maybe a discussion in SG for fellow gamers to learn japanese. Will have discord for group member to encourage speaking in japanese without being shy or fear. Any level of japanese is welcome. It will be a place to learn together, so anyone can be a teacher and anyone can be a student. It's a rough idea but hopefully it will turn better as things goes on. If anyone interested, comment below. If there are enough people i will start this group :D. Mind you, you don't have to be good in english too as english is not my first language.
UPDATE May 15 2018
I think we already have enough people to start this project (yay :D). I will create a steam group and invite them to discuss further about this project. This discussion will still be open for anyone interested in learning japanese and to post future update.
In the meantime, here's
somethingwhile waiting :)I have made steam group. For now it will only be by invite. Thank you.
UPDATE May 27 2018
We're going to held our first discord meetup on May 31 2018. It will be about introduction and discussing about materials and methods that we will use to learn.
UPDATE June 1 2018
After having our first meetup we decided to have short course every Monday and Wednesday, and Speaking meetup (practice) for Thursday and Saturday. Our first goal will be learning hiragana and katakana for this month. So, if anyone want to join it will be a perfect time to do so. :D
UPDATE June 9 2018
We just completed hiragana and there is a test for it. You can also take the test here.
