Game suggestions

I'm not sure if you're buying for your friend, or just advising him, but please do not follow my advice blindly and do research those games and their reviews. There are tons of multiplayer fps games out there, and the challenge is to find the one your friend would like. Here we go:
-Battlefield 3, 4, 1, PUBG, Overwatch, Quake Champions, Warface, Team Fortress 2, Destiny 2, Rainbow Six Siege

As for mmorpg I don't play them often, but there's one I'm interested in right now and it's called Citadel: Forged with Fire

Sounds like Warframe to me

Metro Redux games were the most fav I've ever had in FPS. But it is only single player. Can go for F.E.A.R games, the third one is Co-op.

If you mean a game similar to Monster Hunter World (since you mentioned your friend was planning to get it but gave up due to difficulty) then I'd suggest God Eater 2 Rage Burst. It's kinda like Monster Hunter (I guess? I personally haven't played any Monster Hunter games to confirm that myself.) and it starts off pretty easy and gradually increases the difficulty over the course of the story.

As for a game that is an FPS and sorta like an MMORPG but not quite, my suggestion immediately goes to Borderlands 2. :D (Actually it's more "Co-op RPG FPS than MMORPG but in my opinion that is a massive plus for it. ^_^' )

If he wants just a fun FPS then the original Painkiller, all the Serious Sam games, DOOM and probably a ton more old-school FPS-es are all great choices. :)
Oh, yeah, also Bioshock (all of them) for an FPS with RPG elements.

For MMOs Elder Scrolls Online is a pretty solid option. There's a ton of content that doesn't require membership or DLC and it would keep him interested for over 300 hours. The DLC is almost completely optional and it just adds more to the game.

Another option for MMOs might be Tom Clancy's The Division. It's a pretty neat 3rd person shooter and the difficulty isn't too high until you get to the very end-game.

Dying Light is a great game if you're just looking for a co-op game. It's basically Dead Island mixed with Mirror's Edge. If you decide to get this, then spend a few extra on The Following edition. It more than doubles the content of the game and the additional areas are a lot of fun.

Trove is another MMO that is pretty fun and doesn't get to the extreme grind until super-late game.
