What's your age again?
Great train, thank you! And happy (1-day belated) birthday to you. Also, good for you picking up another hobby that isn't video game related!

Happy Birthday once again! Here I go with a little mini-wall! I am definitely not an expert, but I have my own experience on stringed instruments (about 20 years so far).
My one big suggestion for playing: Practice in short manageable intervals, and make sure you are practicing in the right way. Will save you tons of problems in the long run, if you are consistent with it! A strange thing for speed too is that most people pick it up by starting slower and gradually increasing speed, and others have really fast twitch muscles and prefer the opposite after they find the notes and patterns/keys/modes etc. I am the reverse now, where I prefer speedy, and find it harder to slow down what I play faster, since I like to shred, which isn't super common with bassists. Just playing slower in general is not so easy, but there is a certain threshold I find a bit more difficult in the middle somewhere at times...
I do a lot of things on bass that are unorthodox, so maybe I should have taken my own advice. I can still play about anything I've ever heard on the regular radio from when I was young (since I don't listen to it anymore, and probably never will again) with very little effort, but I am challenged by the music I like, so it's a lot of fun... Moving from 4 string bass to 6 string bass has been great! I can't handle 7 string bass though. Never found one that I felt okay with. It's like a new instrument for me... and not necessary to go above 6 for most of the prog and power metal. Six is perfect... :D I still go back to 4's and 5's from time to time since I have several of each. I might've pursued music more had I stayed healthy. The pressure urticaria (my hands turn red and itch/burn, like hives almost with certain conditions) alone makes it very difficult to play bass consistently, let alone the arthritis and fibro, etc. I still love to try, and people say are pretty amazed to see it even with all my probs. I never will give up on it probably, though... Found a local restaurant recently that I might try to stop in at from time to time that has a little band area with a bass inside there.
No matter what, keep it up if you enjoy it. Once you get used to it more, and things click better, it gets more and more awesome. It's definitely worth the struggles and setbacks, should they come up, to continue to improve. At the end of the day though, having fun with it is the "key"! Bad music pun...

Today (17th) is my irl b-day and I made a train for all you peeps to "celebrate", some of you already know I don't like this one but I'll make the best of it! I have been less active on the boards but I'll return again when irl-stuff settles down, I also started learning guitar which is taking some free time also. Hope all of you are doing well and wish you all the best!
