I generally dislike the term 'director's cut' when it comes to games. It doesn't make any sense. While making a movie you shoot a lot of scenes, many of which don't get used in the final cut of the movie, which is often made with the mainstream audience in mind. So it makes sense to have a director's cut that includes some of the scenes that weren't used in the regular cut. In games however director's cut means bug fixes and additional content that was created especially for the DC version. That's not a director's cut, that's a patch, an add-on or an extended edition.

And let's face it, the only reason why people release their games with a completely new entry instead of releasing a DLC is that they get more attention on the Steam front page that way and that any possible bad/mediocre metascores or reviews of the (possibly) broken original game get purged.

I hope it's not only if you pre-order, it's already a rip-off but it'll be even more if it's limited to pre-orders and not after the release.

Well the game itself is not that bad but I don't find good them promising something for free and then making us to pay for an update.

"Director's Cu*t"

"We want every one to enjoy Q.U.B.E. Director's Cu#t" [which is why we're forcing existing users to buy the game again, and most of them won't]

Developer will be giving Steam keys for the director's cut to those who request it.

Source
Send an email to info@qube-game.com with your Steam username requesting a key. (I sent a link to my Steam profile)

I guess it was the cheapest way for them to do this. People who care to inform themselves about this can get the update for free. Those who don't look at the forums might still buy the update, generating extra revenue.

Edit: Got my key within 20 minutes of sending them an email.

i'm glad they decided to do that. but i'm still confused why didn't they make it as a dlc or something. the new content they're talking about is related to so much stuff, so it's easier this way? well i guess we'll see if they'll keep this promise. thanks for the heads-up.

edit: btw what does he mean with steam username? log-in name?:|
edit2: deleted two sentences because i love them now. xoxo qube devs : :

They posted the info where people were the most vocal about their outrage over the paid update.

They probably figured there wouldn't be that many keys to hand out to calm the vocal minority who stands up for their rights while it goes unnoticed for the large majority who doesn't bother reading forums.

uhmm... i still didn't get the point of steam username. they usually ask for your steamid, don't they?:|

edit: got my key pretty fast. i'd settle with a good discount (come on 50% off is not a good discount) with a no time limited offer but they sent it for free instead. that's why whatever mistake they make indie devs>aaa devs. xoxo swag yolo :- :- :-*

Looks like the deluge of emails asking for free key was too much to handle.

They finally decided to make the game free for previous owners. Pretty much the same thing that Daedalic did for The Whispered World.

I don't get this thread.

It's extra content. Trine 2 did it months ago with their "Complete Story" thing. If the dev had released this as a $5 DLC, I don't think any of you would have given a shit.

Is there something inherently terrible about calling it Director's Cut?

the only different thing i can tell is that the devs said initially it would be free, but changed their minds (and only announced it) when they released the directors cut.

i still don't understand the hate, so i'm with you.

Most of the drama was over the fact that the dev initially promised it would be a free DLC and ended up making it a separate paid game, and only announced it after it was released.

  • It would have been better if it had been released as a DLC. Achievement hunters wouldn't have to do the exact same achievements all over again, and people wouldn't be under the impression that they were sold the same game a second time. (Especially those who bought it recently under the promise of a free director's cut update.)

  • It would have been better if they had at least announced their intention sooner. The storm would have happened before the release and they could have adjusted from there.

  • It would have been better if there was a bigger discount for previous owners so people didn't feel as cheated from the dev's change of heart.

  • And most importantly, it would have been better if they didn't promise a free update a year ago that they will now be giving everyone anyway.

trine 2 complete story was different. they had released a dlc earlier that was for sale separate from the original game, and was never promised to be free. people like me who had purchased the game and the dlc got upgraded for free to complete story when that came out. i don't remember how much the complete story upgrade cost for people who had only bought the base game, but i'm pretty sure it was better than 50% off the price of the entire package. i don't think anyone's upset about it being called director's cut -- they were upset about having to buy the base game again and felt cheated that it had been promised as a free upgrade. i'm pretty sure it used to be $10 and now the director's cut is $10, but their proposed upgrade price for owners of the pre-director's cut version was $5, which is half the price of the game.

personally, having bought the game a while back, i would have considered adding a director's cut dlc for 50 cents or so during a steam sale maybe next summer (as in a year from now), but i won't pay for the same game again. that's always going to feel like being cheated.

if it was $5 DLC I'd have been fine. Because then I can wait until a sale hits and pay $1.25. The 'loyalty discount' crap they do does not stack with sales, so basically the previous owners get nothing unless they want to pay exactly $5... which I don't think this upgrade is worth.

Loyalty discounts can be annoying. I have the base game of Deus Ex:HR and I'd love the Director's Cut, but my loyalty discount makes it the same price its frequently on sale for, which makes it pointless.

I don't fault them for wanting to recoup their costs, but I think the Strike Suit Zero scenario is a better approach. Deep discount for people that already own the game, so that existing owners are essentially just paying the cost price while offering an improved version to new customers.

yep, I feel like if it was on sale with a 80-90% discount for previous owners rather than 50% most of this wouldn't have happened.

it might not have been as bad, but you'd still have the people complaining that they had previously promised it for free. i agree with you though there was no way i was going to buy it for 50% off, but i may have for 80% or more off.

A deeper discount coupled with an earlier announcement would probably have taken care of most of the complains. Some people will never be happy, but I would have settled for a 80%-90% rebate if the developer had announced beforehand that the development cost had been greater than they anticipated, explained that they can't do the free update and apologized for the change of plans.

The way they did it, it sounded like they were doing us a big favor with the 50% discount after promising it for free. Somehow I don't think those developers are really in touch with what's happening in the community or they would have know how other similar cases ended.
