I guess that if you already own QUBE, your game will auto be upgraded and turn into the Director's Cut.

Edit: I hope, unlike Zombie Driver that went HD and have to rebuy it...

Turns that I misread :(
Yes, was previously "You'll get upgraded" and now it's like Emergency 2012/2013/2014 or Cities XL 2010/2011/2012/Platinum "we added one/two new features, so you have to pay the whole game again"...
Well, I'll just wait it comes to a bundle...

They dare to do this for a game that came out in 2011???
And they dare to lie to the Steam community???
How about no, I'll stay with the good developers who stay with their promises... They earn the money.

I might have tried out the director's cut if it was free. But now I think I'll just play Portal 2 again.

(good luck beating that narrative)

or putting a cut scene or 2 into the movie/game/track on an album, you get the odd film thats actually different ie blade runner but most really arent

Comment has been collapsed.

It's a misnomer.

In film, a director's cut is the version of the film as dictated by the director. Almost all films have parts cut out before going to theaters in order to make sure the audience doesn't get bored or sidetracked and to control the length.

Many video games release an enhanced version after release, under some sort of fancy sounding name, which can include modifications to the original, DLC, or both. Classifications such as "Gold", "Game of the Year Edition", "Deluxe", "Complete", "Special Edition", "Enhanced Edition", "Director's Cut", etc. are used. "Director's Cut" has become one of the more common ones, although it's technically misuse of the term.

i don't know if it was broken/unfinished or not. i didn't played that much to tell it. but have you ever heard something called promise, trust, [something about this topic because of rule of three]? at least they could make a real discount and include the dlcs in director's cut so it would meant something. and not a limited offer could be nice too. just because you have the game doesn't mean you finished it. they want to rush their customers. this is the first rule of shady business. and i'm the greedy one? ok.

Except they first said it will be free and later changed their minds. It's not like people are demanding free stuff and acting "entitled" out of the blue

EDIT

also according to some of the comments here and in game hub, original game seemed far away from finished

No, the reason people are bitching is because the dev promised the patch for free then turned around on released day and did the exact opposite of what they promised.

I get it, plans changes. I cost more than they first anticipated to make and they feel like they need to sell this instead of giving it away. It's a shady move but it's their business. However, I'm 100% certain that they didn't decide on that this very morning but more likely a few months ago. That's when they should have told people about this, not on release day after building expectations that they weren't prepared to meet.

It's one thing to change your mind after you realize that development is gonna cost more than you originally anticipated. I have no issue with that part.

What I have a problem with is promising something to your current customers, staying silent for a year then releasing the update while doing the exact opposite of what was promised. They should have come out at least a month ago saying "we're sorry guys, I know we had announced it would be free but that will not be possible due to the cost of making this new version". That way people wouldn't find on release day that what they were promised for free would now cost them $5.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They also worded their announcement poorly. Stating that a "whopping 50%" off for people who own the game is a lot and saying that the "The new price is very reasonable...".

That's a very one sided way to look at it, not at all taking into account for how customers would feel about it. What they should have done is apologized for not fulfilling their original promise and explained why.

... and yes I agree, it would have helped a lot of they did this months ago instead of at the time of release.

Actually everyone who already had Whispered World got the content update for free (they originally planned to sell it cheaper to previous owners, but decided against it in the end).

if that's true (why would you lie anyway? so i'll take your word for it.) toxic games is dead to me. it's not much for them but i'm pretty sure many people are thinking the same.

learn how to be a dev from devs of whispered world or ftl or strike suit zero, toxic games.

Comment has been collapsed.

In the case of The Whispered World, they also tried to make the new edition paid DLC, I'd say only the community's reaction made them switch to a free upgrade. So, not really an example of doing things right, more of a PR disaster recovery.

Unfinished? Personally I enjoyed it to the end, it didn't feel unfinished. It just had a lot of room for improvement like how Portal became Portal 2.

I've played QUBE up to the level where you're in darkness. That was kind of a pain, so I haven't gotten past it. The game wasn't bad, but I don't think I'm going to buy a director's cut. If it were free, I'd probably have given it a shot. But since it's not and I haven't even finished the original game (don't have the DLC either), I don't think so.

What might have helped in this case is if their original message said something like, "We plan to make the Director's Cut free" instead of it "will be free". That would have left open the possibility of things change. Instead, it looks like they went back on their word.

that's sad... Q.U.B.E looked interesting. i was going to buy it at some point, seems like i won't now.

not bothered for the re-release (well, that bothers me, but gaming industry seems to take this way now) but at least give a heavy discount to your original customers (like Strike suit people did, with the permanent %85 OFF, with all the DLCs included [and also you can buy the old game too]).
People would not be so mad if they never said that the thing was going to be free in the first place, the "No shady marketing, we hate that" part make them look like real douches.

I'm afraid it won't work. They are able to take down permanently tags they don't like or just remove any tags they don't like - once I took the effort to tag a couple of games with such things and spammed a couple of similar-minded people to a point where for some titles these tags appeared as one of the first three. Taken down for all games in a matter of hours.

This is becoming way to common and is just a kick in the groin to people that already own the game...blatant money grab... no excuses. If you have more content, add it to the game for free or as DLC not re-release the entire game and try to get people to re-buy it.

Oh, don't worry there's more to come - No Time to Explain is being remade on Unity. Dear Esther too, so I've heard. I suppose they're gonna pull the same thing, despicable especially for NTtE makers - like many others I can't even play it in it's current state, it runs so horribly.

I guess some devs are just gonna remake the same game over and over till the end of their days because they are too incompetent to create something new. Maybe it's time to change line of work.
(here's some space to throw jokes about AAA creators doing exactly the same thing)
