GBA cartridges used different kinds of memory for saves. I think the SRAM ones needed a battery to save and by now many of those batteries are dead.

It may well need a replacement battery - what is the game?

Nevermind - I found a list. These are the games that need a functioning battery for saves (the rest used EEPROM or Flash RAM that should still be good);
Baseball Advance
Boktai 1, 2 and 3 (JP)
Bomberman Tournament
Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire II
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
Dragonball Z Collectible Card Game
Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak
Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Krazy Racers
Lego Bionicle
Lego Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge
MegaMan Battle Network
MegaMan Zero
Metroid Fusion (Only some use a battery)
Metroid Zero Mission
Monster Rancher Advance
Monster Rancher Advance 2
Pokemon Emerald (Not for saving, but to power the Real Time Clock)
Pokemon Ruby (Not for saving, but to power the Real Time Clock)
Pokemon Sapphire (Not for saving, but to power the Real Time Clock)
Super Dodgeball Advance
Warioland 4
For some the battery is fairly easy to change if you have the right tool to get into the case - for others the battery is soldered in.

I'm a recovering Pokemon addict, which is why I knew something about this stuff. I'd previously replaced the batteries in my Ruby and Sapphire cartridges, but they only ran the internal clock which determined the day/night cycle and certain events - loading and saving was unaffected and the games could still be played despite a warning message and being unable to catch certain pokemon that only came out at night, etc. As far as I know my Emerald cartridge is still fine.
But I understand that for some titles cartridges were produced using different forms of memory at different times or in different regions. So yeah, that is certainly possible - and I doubt that list I found is 100% accurate in all cases. And for all I know OP may have a completely different problem, I'm just guessing this is the most likely based on my experiences.

Find the game on gameboy emulator online.
I used to play pokemon silver when i was younger, then one summer i found it, tried turning it back on after a year+ or so of not touching it.
save files gone :( internal battery died
HOORAY FOR EMULATORS
played pokemon silver all over again, and of course since its an old game you can speed the gameplay up super super fast so you don't hafta do the usual pokemon \ rpg grinding time wasting fun
