EDIT: Group is live! If you'd like to join feel free to leave a comment below.

I was thinking of making a Steam group for artists, because there don't seem to be any active ones. I know there are some talented artists on Steamgifts, but is this a thing people here would be interested in? It would be open to people of any artistic ability, you don't have to be a professional (I'm not), you just have to want to learn. We could share our art as well as tips/tutorials/resources/etc... maybe even contests every once in a while, if there are enough people.

I started thinking about this when that bundle with Hexels came out and I thought "if I gifted this, how could I know it would go to someone who will actually find it useful?", so we could also have giveaways for that kind of software.
So, what do you think?

Thank you for taking the time to read this! Here's a giveaway

Thanks! Just FYI I won't be able to create any giveaways but I can not enter any as well, I'd like to be part of the group more for artistic purposes than giveaways :)

Don't worry about that! Giveaways are more of an afterthought, this group will be focused on sharing art ^^
Members will never be required to make giveaways, it's just for those who would like to organise contests/events

Speaking about artist steam group..... There were drawing contests on SG that gathers artists... eg. 4th, 3rd, so on... and a Steam group was made for the contestants. Not very active tho :P

Oh! Somehow I missed those contests :(
Still, I'd like this group to be more relaxed and less focused on giveaways and competition
I think there's room for both groups ^_^

Hmm... I used to draw a lot, now I just do it very rarely, and I'm not great by any means. I love art in all its forms, from painting to sculpture, music and games.
I haven't used any professional tools for creating, however, and I don't think I would want to since I'm no longer that interested in being an artist myself, it's not the path I want to take in life.
So I'm not sure if I would fit in the group, though I would be interested to see what's going on with it. ^^

Sure, you don't have to be to be a professional to join! Art is a hobby for me ^_^ (we don't have any pros in the group yet, afaik)
I'll invite you to the group so you can check it out

I'm one of the two that voted "other"

In principal it's a good idea, but artists of any form are likely to be looking for/joining groups on sites other than Steam, and personally I've shared my keys for things like Pyxel Art with artists I know in person so I know it gets put to good use - and would rather carry on doing it that way than giving them away on Steam groups.

Not saying it's a bad idea at all, just that the community you're looking at are massed in different places. It could turn out to be great. :)

Thanks for the advice! ^_^

artists of any form are likely to be looking for/joining groups on sites other than Steam

I agree (and I'm active in some of those other sites myself), but I think groups there almost always end up being too big to get any kind of meaningful feedback (people just post their art to get views and don't participate in any other way, etc). A steam group of "gamer artists" will definitely be much smaller, but I hope we can keep it active and useful for its members. We'll see how it goes!

As for the software giveaways, it's just something I though about but I don't want to base the group around it. Could be a nice event or prize for a contest, but we have to keep in mind that they are usually more expensive than games and rarely bundled/discounted, so it's harder to organize that than a regular giveaway. In the end, it will depend on what the majority of the group wants.

My pleasure :)

A gamer artists group on Steam could give you an active niche userbase, who are actually interested in helping/giving advice/feedback etc with game art.

I know the software giveaways aren't the main point of your group, but I'm sure your members would appreciate it whenever you can. :)

Either way, good luck to you and your group! ^^

I would be interested in joining as an artist. I recently moved to Taiwan and had to sell all my art supplies, if I can find the time I want to try to delve into digital painting. But, it would be good to be in a group of fellow artist who are also gamers.

I also started drawing digitally when I moved away from home and I couldn't take my supplies with me, and I ended up liking it more than traditional painting! If you want any advice about getting started I'd be happy to help :)

The transition will be tough for me. I am known for heavily textured and mixed mediums with my 4' + abstract paintings. I will have to rethink my style when I make the switch, due to the loss of my most noteworthy elements to my paintings.

I could see this being especially useful on steam in particular if there was a lot of interest around modding/creating fan art for particular games. I have been wanting to learn Inkscape, Gimp, and Blender for unprofessional tinkering a awhile now (I'm very open source oriented) but not sure if that counts. If so, I would be interested. Also, for anyone that draws manga on pc using drawing tablet / mouse / etc... what programs do you like?

Comment has been collapsed.

I learned how to use Gimp a while ago, although now I use photoshop and SAI for digital drawing. In my personal opinion, SAI would be the better of the three: it's not open source but it can do more than Gimp, and it can do almost everything that photoshop can (talking about digital painting, in other areas photoshop is better) for a fraction of the price.

I don't know anything about Inkscape but I'm also interested in learning a bit about Blender. Don't know much about modding either, but I draw a lot of fanart (mostly for Fallout, lately).

I'm an old-school illustrator and oil/acrylic painter, with a few years of air-brushing experiencing.
Don't have as much time as I used to for sitting down and painting/drawing, but I'm definitely interested in seeing what sorts of things others are up to. There are definitely some talented people on SG.

So far I think we have more digital artists in the group, so it will be nice to have a different perspective :D
I've been thinking about picking up traditional art again, but I never find the time...

I'm the opposite -- always wanted to learn digital art, but haven't found the time to commit to it. Photoshop and GIMP are still a foreign language to me. Maybe this year will be the year I commit to buying a drawing tablet and finally commit myself to a new medium. :X

I think photoshop is one of the more complex programs (probably because it's for so many more things than just digital painting), but Gimp and SAI are much easier to learn (in my experience), and if you commit to the medium and decide to "upgrade" to photoshop, what you learned will still be useful.

As for drawing tablets, Wacom has some cheap ones that are great for starting out (used to be called Wacom Bamboo, but I'm not sure if those have been discontinued), and if you decide digital art isn't for you the loss isn't too great. There may be better brands out there, but I've never tried any other... Now have an Intuos and it's one of the best things I've ever bought.
