My go to in this category would have been Animal House, but it's absolutely a frat movie. So my guesses for raunchy comedies that could also be teen (but not teen movies) are:
Wet Hot American Summer
Road Trip
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Comment has been collapsed.
I legit just learned the Joker guy directed Road Trip
no green, seth or tom
no amy poehler
no sean penn
no nic cage
no jennifer jason leigh

I just learned the same thing. Which means the Joker guy is also the Hangover guy
Role Models
Superbad

this feels like a trap, so now going to put my neck on the chopping block anyway:
Joker
The Dark Knight
Star Wars: Rogue One

I enjoy all these movies but.. yeah they overrated.
No clowns and no robots thou.
Dark knight is closest
It's not a trap so much as me wanting to take a potshot at a specific movie

I would say Tenet, Dunkirk then Imterstellar.
However
No robots
No rotating hallways
Not a biopic
Comment has been collapsed.
Ah so probably not a Christopher Nolan joint ;) in which case, maybe a superhero film...
My hot takes, again:
Deadpool & Wolverine
Iron Man
Spider-Man 2 (I don't think this movie is over-rated... but you might ;) )
Comment has been collapsed.
I saw Deadpool 1 & 2 and was underwhelmed. I think Ryan Reynolds has become unbearable lately.
Iron Man was fine. I was more let down as things just continue to drag in the MCU. (Homecoming being the biggest bummer I watched because...)
I think Spider-Man 2 is still the greatest comic book movie ever made.
Comment has been collapsed.
No Patterson
Top gun is sooo overrated. But no cruise and no planes.
American History X is very good but some parts are really simplistic to move the story along.
I get why it would be considered for this list.
Suplee being a bag of crap is weird when you watch My Name is Earl like
He don't like crab man...
But no Nazis
Comment has been collapsed.
I like me some Birdman even with its wonky bits.
But yeah it could easily be argued as overrated for that year.
No Keaton in my movie though.
Also I think Spotlight is more overrated. Birdman had some fun and jazz and one gimmicky idea; Spotlight is just a regular film. Good but not great at anything really.
Comment has been collapsed.
Terminator one is good but it does have cracks from its budget and age. But I think it holds together very very well. T2 has higher highs of course but furlong is so cringy at times that it really hurts the movie. "Are you calling mu-wah a douchebag?" 🤢
All blade runners are boring. There's a bunch of goofy stuff like the androids flipping around dressed like dolls and such that just like.. what? And the 19 versions including the one where they just drop n-bombs throughout. Visually impressive but empty.
And then 2049 did the same thing. Visually impressive but empty.
But I said no robots, no Gosling, no Denis Villanueva and I'm adding no Ridley Scott.
I love me some Silence of the Lambs. I think all the acting is so strong
The only real thing I fault is the convenience of Hannibal wearing a guard's face.
But I'm also willing to admit I'm bias.
No Foster and No Hopkins.
No lambs or FBI.
Comment has been collapsed.
No horses
Hugh Glass as a real man
Not as pretty
Man the Revenant looked good and tom hardy was fantastic. I can understand the slow pace and isolated feel being a turn off: and that the man vs elements story is sort of like torture porn in a way.
Also the movie I'm thinking is shorter
Comment has been collapsed.
Both overrated. I explained thoughts on Gump below.
No war thou.
Green Book is alright. The backlash seems way more extreme than it should be for a well done if simplistic movie.
The movie I'm thinking of isn't as "uplifting" or "heartwarming"
Comment has been collapsed.
Haven't seen Chicago
Not a musical
Big Lebowski I get. It's hype is insane but like it does have good moments.
Not a corn bros pic
Ferris is the best of those teen 80s fluff pics honestly.
But the movie I'm thinking is not a comedy
Not teen
Not fun (not intended to be)

Haven't seen LotR. But no orcs/dwarves/elves or kings.
Godfather gets overblown for sure but it's still very good.
Not a mob movie
Shawshank I find doesn't get the same fervor when people talk about great movies. It's like everyone accepts it as really good movie passively.
Not a jail movie.
Comment has been collapsed.
In fact, I don't think any of these movies are overrated.
Titanic
Barbie
Fight Club
Comment has been collapsed.
All good movies
I think fight club might be the weakest outta the lot though
Titanic has one of the most genuinely terrifying scene put to film. Unmatched by any horror movie. When they hear the water in a distant hallway. Holy smokes dude. The only thing that has came close to making me as anxious was Swallow cause I watched it while my wife was pregnant and seeing Hunter hold that dirt had me sweating bullets.
No boats in the movie I'm thinking of thou.
Every time I watch Barbie I laugh and cry. It's made with such love when it should be the most corporate thing in the world.
The movie I'm thinking of is corporate as hell.
Fight Club is such a bro movie. It's a great time and it's like really good to start viewers on a path to more and more layered and complex films. The acting is solid and it's just so good and grimey.
Very close in ways to the movie I'm thinking but also not. Does share an actor thou.
Comment has been collapsed.
Gladiator is a fine movie, but that's it.. fine.
It's wet design really pulls it together but outside of the actual coliseum fights I only remember the guy touching grain.
More modern setting for mine.
Good Will is good but feels somewhat formulaic. Damon's haircut is terrible but the acting is solid enough.
My movie not Boston thou
And no math.
Gravity I haven't seen but
No space
Comment has been collapsed.
Very strange pull. I don't think anyone thinks this movie is overrated
It's got like 6/10
No Heath
No Depp
No Jude law
Comment has been collapsed.
I was working off The Dark Knight being "closest" implying a Heath Ledger movie. I think the average reviews of 6/10 are pretty generous, I put it more like 3.5/10. I'm all up for a Terry Gilliam fever dream but this one just doesn't work well, even with the substitute actors.
Next round of guesses, bearing in mind these are movies I think are overrated and mileage may vary
Frozen
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Comment has been collapsed.
Very smart to work off of that.
I realize I conflate Dr.Parnassus with Mr.Magorium's Wonder Emporium
At least the one about the sad store is kinda memorable
In a 5/10 way.
Honestly I think Gilliam movies are overrated as a whole (except 12 Monkeys)
Never saw frozen or button
Not animated, no pitt and not a Judd Apatow movie.
Here's a hint that won't help anyone
Utah punks love this movie. They talk about it all the time.
And it's not SLC Punk. That movie feels like an episode of Malcom in the Middle with how Lillard talks to camera and punks are so dense they don't even realize Bob dresses as a homage to Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver unless you sit them down and tell them. I saw it one time and was like "oh that's it? Yeah I'm good never again" and they made the sequel and filmed a Screeching Weasel concert for it and I didn't go to the concert cause i had work but like.. man i wish i called in cause that wouldve been sick.

Hey this would fit pretty well in my raunchy comedy thread too. (No carry with that one so don't waste time posting over there)
Except the jailhouse movie I'm thinking isn't a comedy at all.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hey oh!!! Cool Hand Luke.
A movie that feels like it has religious implications but is ultimately better if you ignore all that completely and just have a nice time with George Kennedy and Paul Newman.
So pick a game
Or double it and give it to the next person?
Comment has been collapsed.
I agree about leaving the religious aspect to one side, of course parallels can be drawn but it's a great movie even without them. The end made me angry the first time I saw it (thankfully ad free) but I realised after that it really couldn't end any other way. While I suspect many people crave the karmic injustice's comeuppance of the Shawshank Redemption, this movie I feel hews closer to the way the world really is.
Prize-wise, unless you're really desperate to shift your keys I'd be happy to let the next guy/gal have a double treat, still enjoying your previous generosity, very slowly downloading Mafia over public wifi on my breaks.....it's gonna take a while 🫢
Comment has been collapsed.
We still got
Raunchy Comedy, Legal Drama and Overrated movie available for guessing.
Comment has been collapsed.
I haven't seen Crash or The Notebook or Gravity
No Gosling in my movie though and no space
Dune is insanely overrated. I found it so slow and flat. Honestly any Villeneuve movie can fit here.
His best being Arrival (thanks to Amy Adams mor than anything) and his worse being Enemy. I hate Enemy.
But I'm not thinking of a Villeneuve movie. It doesn't have space. No brolin or chalamane.
Comment has been collapsed.
I personally haven't watched Crash out of all the movies I listed here but that's one Oscar-winning movie that most of my friends told me to not watch because it was that bad.
You're right about Dune. I think out of all the latest hyped movies, Dune was the biggest offender. The story went absolutely nowhere in its 2 and half hour run time. It was an absolute super snooze fest.
Comment has been collapsed.
Imma tell you now, Nomadland is also Oscar winning trash that's just boredom solidified

Not a 'movie' movie.

Critics gave it like 5 or 6/10 not 1/10 like disaster movie. I can say that Mike from redlettermedia hated it.
And there's a scene where in the background is hella clutter. Like a Himalayan salt lamp and everything and boy as a lower middle class guy I know all about that lamp and clutter and I was like "YO THIS MOVIE GETS IT"
Is that a helpful hint? Probably not but like.. it is what it is
Comment has been collapsed.
Alright let's do an easy one.
An epic/western/drama that'll be pretty easy if you look through the comments
Comment has been collapsed.
True grit isn't "grand" enough to be an epic
I don't know the other two that well and don't wanna get confusing.
No civil war thou

Sounds neat and sorta close but again I just found out about it soooo
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes! Here it is.
Mhol- pick a game or double it and give it to the next person?
Comment has been collapsed.
It's an interesting film with some fine acting and themes. I admit despite growing up with a plethora of westerns thanks to my parents I struggled to recall many westerns without shootouts, even the comedies. I thought it might have been Rio Bravo at first, the siege/shootout at the end is such a minor component of the overall film.
If it's alright with you and the next bloke I might actually put my hand up for a game this time, Chasm if it's still available. Thanks for keeping this up, I don't have alot of time to browse at work but it's a nice brain teaser when I can.
Comment has been collapsed.
Chasm is yours
What's impressive to me is that it was only Dennis Hopper's second film role and he had such a major part. Too bad it took him 10 or so years to parlay that into a other worthy role.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're absolutely right about that but it says something that he still stands out even amongst all the high level actors (Hudson, still in his heyday, Taylor towering over things as expected and also James Dean's still present bright-new-thing status).
Some actors seem to have luck, I'm thinking especially of Kirk Douglas in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, that set them right off on a path of recognition while others can take years (of still impressive and consistent performances) or more even before success finds them.
Comment has been collapsed.
People are guess correctly

Overrated movie:
Forrest Gump
The Breakfast Club
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Comment has been collapsed.
Forrest Gump is for sure overrated. I think it slides from passable to being hailed as great by being quotable. Like if you're thinking of "Momma always said" it's gotta be good right? Earworm logic.
But no war in my movie.
I hate the Breakfast Club. John Hughes has like 2 good movies and then stuff like long duck dong and the "Take off your glasses, you were pretty all along" kinda trash just gets set aside because people love the soundtrack or something.
Also we just gonna ignore the kid brought a gun to school cause they spent an afternoon being ignored by the teacher and smoking weed.
Not brat pack.
Not teen.
ETEWAAO
Being the longest movie title ever
I love it
But I see how the emotional momocan seem manipulative and the action might not blend for some.
But no multi verse

By my mind, Donnie Darko and Blair Witch Project are about as overrated as movies get. In fact, when I saw BWP at the theater, people got pissed at me when I started laughing at the absurdity of it all.
I'm not interested in winning games though, lol.
Comment has been collapsed.
Donnie Darko is garbage. The middle school philosophy, the pointless nature of forcing the movie to loop. the just waste.
Is up there in the "Why do we still talk about this position?" Pantheon.
But no time loops in my movie.
Also BWP gets my goat because people act like it incent a genre that was around way before.

To be honest, I just tried to follow the clues. Espacially the one with "Art School Confidential" but this really was tricky to find THE ONE. I am happy I can stopp watching dark teen movie trailer for now ^^. "Flower" wasn't on my radar until now. Normally I know at least one trailer but this film seems to have completely passed me by.

Might be showing my age but it's really a classic, not just of sci-fi either. Whether younger sci-fi fans want to admit it or not it really paved the way for so many movies after it. Though I admit alot of my sci-fi faves are "old school". At least I got to mention A.I. without my seemingly customary experience of having random internet people try to convince me they're aliens at the end 🤦♂️
If it's ok & still available I'd like Blade of Darkness, my colleague reminded me this week that it's actually the game better known as Severance back in the day (spoilers: I'm old) and I remember having a decent bit of fun with that.

Rubber (2010)
Machete (2010)
RoboGeisha (2009)
The Voices was weird but in a entertaining way. But now I can't watch Reynolds films anymore ... his way of acting is overused and exaggerated.
The movie list above is all super weird. (check out the trailers, if you do not know them)
Comment has been collapsed.
Once Deadpool hit Reynolds kinda just ballooned well out of the area he belongs.
I'm just sick of him and especially his Mint commercials. But back in 2014 when the voices came out he was still like, "Oh yeah that guy, he's alright"
No Robert Rodriguez
I might look into robogeisha but
The movie I'm thinking isn't Japanese
And I wrote about rubber on a previous comment. It's like one of my bottom 5 movies.

Rubber should be shut out completely by the fact Death Bed exist.
That movie is all the same "What were they thinking?" and such but made seriously and not a "meta commentary on the state of movies" like stop huffing your own farts Rubber
Coneheads isn't great but it's exactly what it set out to be.

Easy Rider as a so bad it's good movie?
If we wanna pick on Peter Fonda we can at least go after The Trip in its 60s hippy jam band music and so many swirling lights it literally hurts to watch.
Like I don't know that many P. Fonda movies but Easy Rider is classic.
As for a bad Dennis Hopper biker movie man you gotta go glory stompers. Wanna be edgy but can't afford it grindhouse garbage.
No Fonda. No hopper. No bikers. No Jack Nicholson. No Luis Guzman from the Limey (also with Fonda) or Terrance stamp
Comment has been collapsed.
Indeed, Easy Rider is a brilliant movie, one of most important masterpieces in all hollywood history. And all early movies with Peter Fonda are great too. But I thought "so bad it's good" means b-movie : low budget, independent, roger corman kind of style and things like that. Thats why I picked Easy Rider
So maybe -
Grindhouse
Clercs
Altered States
Comment has been collapsed.
Grindhouse is great.
I definitely need to watch it again not that I'm not 17 and double check but it should be fine.
Clerks never clicked for me
And Altered States I was so disappointed in.
Have you heard the real story about that though? Where the scientist just does massive amounts of acid and feeds it to dolphins and builds this insane prison house for a lady and a dolphin it's just wild.
Then you watch mild as toast Altered States and you're like
Oh that's it; boo.
But none of those movies failed so hard at what they were trying to do they swung the other way.

It is the only movie that starts with a guy staring down the camera and saying, "You know, you're dumb for watching this." And the movie proves him right. And people be like lol killer tire but it's just trash. Not fun trash like Slugs or something but aggravating.
Sharknado and Killer Nun aren't meant to be serious.

So if there just were dinos that's fantasy (Prehysteric style)
But a machine that clones or is explained somewhat realistically to make dinos is sci-fi (JP or The Fly's teleporters)
Although if the machine isn't really explained scientific like in Bill and Ted that's fantasy

And one I suspect to annoy you 😂, Gremlins. Oh yes internet I will die on this particular hill, just as some people say it isn't Christmas until Hans Gruber falls off a building, for me it isn't Christmas until a gremlin gets blown up on a microwave 😄

Tim Burton wrote the poem the movies based on not directed it- it's like how they say "HP Lovecrafts Re-Animator" and such.

My Mum used to argue that Me Me in St Louis is a Christmas movie. Not sure myself 🤔
It's a shame musicals are out because I was prepared to put myself on another hill and say the Muppet Christmas Carol is not only the best adaption of Dickens' book but a really great Christmas movie in itself. Fight me internet ✌️

Christmas story has out stayed it's welcome if you ask me. Especially since they made a sequel with one of the worst names in history
No Arnold or Sinbad
And I never saw Meet Me in St.Louis- but it passes the snow test at least so there's that
Not a musical(Google said st Louis is)
As for the Muppets; I think that might be the majority opinion.
Like maybe 40% think that and then the other 60 is split 3 or 4 ways but in the end that still means you are the majority.
Personally I lean to Scrooged but I can be swayed either way
As long as it ain't that nightmare Robert Zimmeckes thing

My colleague is insisting I waste one of my choices by suggesting Santa Clause the Movie 🙄 (she loves it, no offence to my mom who loved it too but I swear not even John Lithgow hamming it up enough to get the lead in a remake of Babe made it palatable)
Black Christmas, the original not the meh remake
Krampus? (Saw it at a "bad movie get together night" last year, to be honest I didn't really think it should have been there)
I know what you mean about RZs A Christmas Carol, it was just setting me off on a few levels, mostly the unusual animation. It's partly why I have mixed feelings on the Polar Express. Normally I'll watch any Zemeckis if only for the technical aspects of his films.
Comment has been collapsed.
I have never heard of Santa Claus the Movie
No Lithgow.
Krampus isn't bad. I remember enjoy Adam Scott a fair bit in it.

Hmm, no remake means no Bishops Wife, one of my favs. No Shop Around the Corner either. Suppose it rules out the Grinch as well. Almost out of my favs. 🤔 No British means no Love Actually (which I must be one of the few people to not actually like). Hmm.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation? (another one from my colleague,I knew it was a bad idea getting her involved. I actually like the first movie but all the ones after that just did the same stuff again)
Bad Santa? (Know some people who love it. It's okay 🤦♂️)
The Ref? (Bit out of left field but iirc it is set at Christmas)

Ah, I had a feeling it wasn't going to be a typical Christmas movie. It's an ok movie, but just like Disney's The Santa Clause I really don't know how they extracted a sequel out of it. And it really kickstarted the 21st century anti-christmas film trend, which has been hit and miss to be honest.
If it's still available I'll put my hand up for Neverwinter Nights. It seems I've lost the CD for one of my expansion retail copy so it will be nice to play it properly again. Cheers for this, haven't had alot of time to tease my brain like this with work piling up but it's been a nice distraction!

This has unfortunately reignited a long simmering argument I have with my colleague but she's insisting I suggest Pulp Fiction. I love the film but don't consider it an anthology like she does, if the characters & plots never intersected then I'd say she was right but the movie doesn't really work like that. 🤷♂️ Different people will see it differently I suppose.

I agree with you. Pulp Fiction isn't anthology. Connections and intersections don't mean it can't be but that movie has far more than what would "passing to the next bit" or "tieing it together"
I thought about it and I got why Pulp Fiction and Happiness aren't anthology. I feel to qualify you have the short start to finish and not intercut with the other stories; excluding the wrap around.

Hmm.
The horror suggestions have got me wondering.
Black Sabbath? (Saw it years ago on a community tv stations "dodgy" late night movie show. Was initially intrigued by Boris Karloff but by the end I admit it was .....interesting. Very "European", take that how you will.)
Dead of Night? (Don't know if this is well known in the states but imo it's a pretty decent British horror anthology.... emphasis on the "British", and probably more "spooky" than horror)
Finally remembered one of Altman's films that was eluding me, Short Cuts? Been ages since I've seen it, I have a positive memory of it though.

It doesn't matter anymore. I give up. Grindhouse was my last attempt. And I don't consider it an anthology.
I don't see any decent lists of anthology films anywhere and I'll probably start naming repeats when trying to guess further. Most of the most famous ones have already been named, only the most obscure and trashy ones remain. Maybe I still have a couple of options, but I can't remember them.
Let someone else try to guess.

I'll state the genre of movie I'm thinking of
You can guess as many times as you want, but you can only make one comment with 3 titles until I reply then you can post another. If I have multiple movies being guess you can make a comment on each
Please, to help with formatting and ease to read, reply to my comment where I ask for the movie with your guesses
Winning one does not mean you can't enter another. Feel free. It's all about the getting the correct guess.
Ask for hints, I'll answer if I think it won't make it too easy. Hints do not need to be attached to a guess.
