I don't see any reason to be excited for GTA V, and even less so for other future releases. Is it wrong of me to, now that I'm finally starting to earn some money, see absolutely nothing of interest in the AAA market? Am I just biased towards my nostalgia, or am I right in thinking most of the new releases in the next while are either titles for existing franchises that have gone downhill (not referring to GTA here) or new IPs which don't see anywhere near as excited as we hoped (except maybe Cyberpunk 2077 and DICE's Battlefield, neither of which have release dates)?

Am I becoming disillusioned with gaming as a whole, or have I just not heard of some crazy amazing game coming out on the horizon that's going to blow me away? Help me out guys; I want to enjoy games again.

The more the hype, the harder it fails. It has become quite a rule, recently.

The AAA market offer mostly crappy overhyped games nowadays, with some exceptions.

Permalink

Hopefully Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of those exceptions. For a quarter of a billion dollars, it had better be as good as it looks.

For a little less than that, SWTOR was made, and it failed hard AFAIK... lots of money does not mean lots of quality...

Also, we have to see its porting quality...

Not completely, though. I've been kind of bored of the open-world stuff after New Vegas, as trekking around from point to point is getting a little tedious, and I haven't been bothered to finish off the GTA IV expansions I got at discount yet.

Maybe it's time for you to buy more nostalgia games, explore new genres or just quit gaming altogether. Maybe you've just outgrown it if you can't find any games AAA or otherwise that interest you?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think I've outgrown gaming just yet. Dead Space has got me so very pumped just recently, and a lot of my old nostalgic games still cheer me up, but with hundreds of hours spent in them, especially the more linear ones, they're starting to get a bit stale for me. And now that I've actually got a job in games which I'm really excited about and my game development studies are picking up, it's certainly not gaming itself that's the problem.

I'll have to keep looking and try out some smaller games, hopefully one will capture my imagination.

He should try the old games that he missed out on. Tecmo's Deception is a good one. I beat it about once a year because there's no game like it on the market. The sequels didn't allow any freedom.

I've never even heard of that, and that's probably my biggest problem. I've missed out on so much I need to catch up on.

There is no such thing as "you've just outgrown it" when it comes to gaming.
It's not a faze that will go away, at least not for me. It's a hobby/passion of mine that i hope i will be able to do until the day i die.

And i bet there are a lot of people that share my thoughts.

If a priest saw the penises and drugs in GTA V, I'm pretty sure they'd be performing an exorcism on the game disc, not me.

And I'm really hurt by your comment that you don't care. My whole life was based around you specifically caring about what I have to say. I think I might just go ahead and off myself all because you, someone of high prestige and class, decided that this thread a waste of time.

nope i stop really liking GTA after San Andreas, after that 4 came out and it was an okay game but i felt it was a step back. nothing new really to me and not my style of driving controls. 4 only interest me for the mods, now.

In my opinion you're only half right. I mean sure some publishers are forcing devs into milking a certain series which doesn't add much more with each iteration or has turned into a cash grab (not naming anything in particular here, just sayin'). But other iterations manage to make it worth your time/money while transitioning into next gen (some might only seem like it though, since the previous game in the series could have had feature additions/bug fixes instead of stupid dlc but still, might not always depend on the devs). On the other hand some new tech is emerging (VR !) which seems absolutely amazing. And of course plenty of indie devs come out with some amazing titles, so I'm thinking that in the end there's something for everybody right now. In fact I think this is a pretty good time to be a gamer. Just my two cents. GTA V does look amazing (even though I won't be able to play it anytime soon because I own a potato :D). Admittedly I loved GTA IV as well, and pretty much all the other GTAs.

This is more of just a personal thing as a lot of what's coming out is either sequels to game franchises I haven't started (I.E. Battlefield), sequels to franchises I've become disillusioned with (Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag) or newer IPs I'm not too interested in (Watch Dogs until the PC community reviews the game and verifies it runs smoothly).

I'm sure GTA V is a fantastic game, and at a $256 million it has every right to be, but I just personally don't fell much inclined to play it at the moment and there's nothing more out there which has me interested yet. Maybe EA will be good for a chance and release Alice 3.

Hmm I keep finding games I like nowadays (that are either upcoming/beta/already released that I haven't played, etc.), games like Titanfall, Starbound, Hearthstone. I won't make a list, just saying. Also really looking forward to giving Spelunky a shot. But, whatever floats yer boat. Volgar the Viking seems to be pretty old school if you're into that (god I so want to get that as well).

I'll have to check out more of the indie archives, it seems. I already spotted one game I'm interested in (I think it's called Dreams or something of the like?), so it's possible there's a huge amount of cheap games out there which should keep me going until the big developers do something awesome again.

Yeah, the idea is that there's a high likelihood these days that someone out there has the same ideas about gaming that you've got (or at least in the same ball park so to speak) and also happens to have a game coming out, or already out. I for one am glad that games can be easily kickstarted and am fond of the communities that form around them and the way developers handle feedback. In fact I'm pretty sure you can even find AAA quality titles that start this way, as an indie project, regardless of having a more or less consecrated development team behind it. Anyways, good luck to ya !

Actually, I see the world as "Gamers" and "Casual Gamers", the later being people who only play Angry Birds and Farmvile, then claim to somehow be a "true gamer". Frankly, I don't care what console anybody picks, so long as it's not the R.E.A.L. Panasonic 3DO...

There is and always was only one GTA. GTA 2. If they ever remake that, then there will be a second GTA. Then again they'd make it for consoles and that wouldn't count. So no, GTA franchise died long ago. Doesn't prevent Zombies from humping on it no matter how shitty, generic and boring it is.

I think the problem is most people believe that the camera angle the old-school GTA games would turn off a lot of people simply because they don't know how fun those games were. Proof that you don't need 3D graphics or 3 discs to be able to have a lot of fun.
