Suuuup good people,

so I posted "KYS" on a profile picture of a girl who posted pictures of herself torturing her cat. Facebook then decided to not suspend her account but mine lol. 30 days again.

So since I talked to a lot of people lately on Discords, I would love to know the most ridiculous reasons you were banned from Facebook.

Also, recommend me some good Discord servers.

Thanks in advance and have a great day!

I had a funny day with FB support as I reported 6 photos of a guy dressed in SS uniforms doing sieg heil and 2 from the 6 pictures were breaking the FB rules but 4 others were not :D

So I think they have green and red button and it depends on your luck what they will press and when.

It was not a cosplay. Guy was mentaly ill and wrote many posts about how great Hitler was and how he want to be like him and what he will do with Poles, Jews and Ukrainians.

If she's torturing a cat they will suspend her and more than likely take down the account, the support team is probably still looking into it before making a final decision. It sounds like you may have gotten a spam ban, which can happen rather quickly, especially if you have a history of doing it. Has you account had action taken upon it before this?

The problem with social networks is not the idea of their usefulness but the content that is put on them... mostly negative or useless

I've honestly never had a problem with using email for that, or if something more personal is required then actually picking up the phone and calling someone. Ultimately I'd rather use steam chat to keep in contact with my buddies than jump on Facebook.

Most people also seem to use facebook and the word friends in a really strange way. It's often not friends, but acquaintances or people they work with but again are not close to. I really have no need to see where someone I once worked with ten years ago went on holiday nor do I care what they decided to make for dinner this week.

Ultimately each to their own I guess. I prefer the personal touch in communicating with people that I term friends.

If you post "Kill Yourself" anywhere you should be banned permanently or at least a year.
There is no justification for posting that. People have really killed themselves because enough assholes thought it's okay or funny to send that message.

Yeah, and that's exactly why you don't say it. From my time running forums, especially those with a younger nerdy demographic, mostly teens, who play video games and watch anime, there were many that admitted to suffering from depression. We banned any suicide topics and sent people links to where they can find help. But, anyone telling another user to "go kill yourself" got an automatic 2-week account suspension from a mod. Facebook has sorta taken the place of those type of forums today and with less control over content.

One guy says in IRC one day "wouldn't it be funny if that emo kid really killed himself because I told him to do it in PM?" I banned the guy for a year. Then I had to talk to the emo kid to make sure he was okay.

People shouldn't underestimate the power of their words. There is no way of telling what kind of mental state the person on the receiving end is in.

Okay, sure, torturing an animal makes me not feel sorry for the woman in that post, but still don't like people using "KYS". She needs to be reported to authorities in her area.

No reason given.

I've kept my account deactivated for a few years now, only reactivating it on occasions, every other month or so, when/if I need to do a specific action like finding the contact info of distant friends, and deactivating it again immediately after. But last time I tried to reactivate it, it failed. No reason given. I know nobody hacked it because, as a deactivated account, you get the privilege of an e-mail notification every time someone connects to (hence reactivates) your account. A puzzling mystery.

PS: also nice to see many people here don't use FB either, I thought this was less common.

I was never banned from Facebook, but there was a time that I set myself up for it.

My friend was banned for a time for the most ridiculous reason ever... for not using the English version of her name. Many others were banned too for the same reason. They said that because her name was in English on her birth cert, she had to use that. Her argument was that everyone knew her by her Irish name and rightly so. If Facebook's European headquarters were not in Ireland I could understand, but being here, they know we are a bilingual country where people have two versions of their names that are both legally recognised and we use them depending on whether we speak English or Irish as first language. Her first language is Irish. It happened about 5-6 years ago now. In support of our friend, myself and a bunch of friends changed to our Irish-language names. We figured that they couldn't ban all of us and this would only get bigger if they did. Anyway, facebook backed down after being faced with a change.org petition and a lawsuit over demanding people's birth certs etc.

For some odd reason, after all this, I couldn't change my name back to English for years. XD. I've only been able to change it back in the last few months lol.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That sounds vaguely disturbing. I know FB introduced mandatory real names a couple ago but what gives them any right to ask for a copy of the birth certificate or how else would they know? Come to think of it I never had to verify my real name in any way but maybe that's because I was using it from the get go (?)

Edit: Or is that some kind of optional feature like verified accounts, so people can tell you actually are who you claim to be?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, they were pretty much throwing their weight around because of the accented characters in Irish names and the fact that everyone here speaks fluent English, despite some speaking only Irish in their day-to-day life, depending on where they live. She was using her real name from the get-go. That is, the Irish one.

For example, if you come from an Irish speaking area, your name could be something like "Sinéad Ní Cheallaigh," and you might be known by only that name since you were a baby, it's on your college degree, your passport, your driving license etc. But when Facebook specifically asks to see your birth cert, your parents might have put your name in English "Jean Kelly." Now you are going to get banned from Facebook unless you agree to change your name to Jean Kelly, a name that no one knows you by. Both names are legally recognised here, but Facebook decided that they would enforce English-only... that is, until they got in trouble for discrimination.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So they were specifically asking people to verify their identity based on their gaelic heritage? But why would anybody go along with that or were they threatening to suspend accounts until the owner complies? If FB dared to do that to me that would be all alarm bells ringing.

For example as far as Amazon knows I live in my local equivalent of the White House (though our president doesn't live there, it's just his office). When a company asks me stuff that's none of their fucking business pardon my french (I'm looking at you SquareEnix) I just lie to them.

Sorry for all the stupid questions but there's just soo much wrong with this it's hard for me to comprehend ´:D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think it had anything to do with heritage because a birth cert wouldn't tell them that. All of our names were anglicised by the British during the occupation, but are still distinctly Irish surnames. My English name is pretty obviously Irish. And I can translate most of them on the spot, despite my first language being English. Most people can. There's nothing they could learn, except giving them a reason to enforce the use of the English language on Facebook. It seems like it was a power thing for them. Scottish people and Native Americans faced similar issues, I believe.

I see. I just assumed since you said it was due to the accented characters in Irish names that accented characters means gaelic name.

I think they are just a shithole company.
Oh well it does, but what I meant was that both sets of names are distinctly Irish. Names like Murphy, O'Neill, O'Brien, Kelly and so on are still uniquely Irish. You know right away that those people have Irish heritage without even seeing the Irish-language version of their name. =)

This was one of the petitions: https://www.change.org/p/facebook-lig-d%C3%BAinn-%C3%A1r-n-ainmneacha-gaelacha-a-%C3%BAs%C3%A1id-let-us-use-our-irish-names

Here's another really dumb one. Nothing to do with Irish names or language, but an Irish girl with the name "Gypsy." It's unusual, sure, but it's still her name. They're being pretty obnoxious. https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/why-is-she-getting-singled-out-facebook-bans-irish-girls-account-after-saying-her-name-is-a-racial-slur-38415950.html

As of late, they also really hate nazi puns, accidental swastikas and the like. A few years back there was no problem posting those. No more sharing Adolf Hipster. I did nazi that coming, Anne Frankly I find that grossly patronizing.
