So I worked at a newspaper and I really like the job. Thing is I didn't have a contract and I was working for 1/4 of what I should be earning and under the promise of a contract. They always gave me a date and when that date came they changed until they simply said they don't know when they will offer me a contract. As much as I was pleased with the job I felt like they were taking advantage of me and didn't really care about me.

I can't stop thinking I made the wrong decision but i don't know how much will they keep doing that if I had stayed.

I am now unemployed and sad.

Edit: As many suggested, the smart thing to do was to look for a job before quitting and I absolutely agree but I am a sad piece of bread you can't ask me to be smart. I was really stressed and reaching to some people close to the managers (who will never see me) and they didn't got answers either. I was very frustrated and depressed about how I was being treated so I didn't think it clearly, to give you an idea, I went to work the last day until the lady who will give me answer came and after she said there were no news I just asked if I can get a recomendation letter and left at the middle of the shift.

I also want to thank everybody for their comments and support, I may not answer to many but I've read them all.

It sounds like a good job to not have. I would not want to work somewhere like that. Make sure to write some good notes about your experience there for your resume while it is still fresh in your memory.

Might feel like the wrong decision now but I'm pretty sure you'll see it as the only choice you could've made.

I think you could have continued working while looking for another job. Since you quit anyways, just look for a new one. You were right to think they took advantage of you if you were supposed to earn more.

Good! Just don't be like me and don't spend 1 and half year doing nothing... Only to come back to the same job just in different place xD
In your case It wouldn't be that bad because you liked what you were doing at least xD

I think you did the right thing in quitting, though I feel you should have looked out for something else before outright quitting, specially if you need the money. Nonetheless, I wish you good luck in your job hunt now, and hopefully your experience will pay off at finding something better.

No doubt that you made the right decision. I do wonder though if and how they tried to convince you to stay?
That would give you a decent idea how likely they were going to keep their promise.

after month and a half they told me that the main person on my job would get a vacation so I will be tested for 1 month and then get a contract. after that they said I had to wait for the other guy to come back from vacation. I didn't quit then because only then they started paying me and, as I enter with the help of a friend who has a business relationship with that company, I didn't think it would be right to leave them with nobody at that job and may hurt the relationship they had. When I said I would leave as having no news about a contract, they didn't seem to care at all.

I was working for 1/4 of what I should be earning

Maybe I'm just biased since I've been looking for my first job for the past three years with nothing to show for it besides a few interviews, but I agree with killamoa: it might have been better to look for another job while still working and wait until you have another job offer before quitting so you'd at least have some income in the meantime. 1/4 is better than 0/4.

Oh well, too late now. Don't worry too much; I'm sure you'll be able to get a decent job before me.

Unfortunately a lot of good jobs are ruined by bad managers. I hope you find a new one quickly.

I wish you luck in the future. Don't think about what you did or what you think you should have done, just move on.

You were being overlooked you wanted stability and a contract, they didn't give you that, you left. That's fine.

It's normal that you are feeling down and hopeless and that you feel like you will have trouble finding a job and that you worry about your future. Stop overthinking about all that. Put your head up, try to have some faith in yourself and go look for a job where you will be respected. Best of luck with that!

Yea, that would have continued on and would never have changed anyway. They probably would have fired you and got someone else working for the low pay, if you would have continued to push them about it. Leaving was definitely the better idea.

Good luck with finding something better, though!

She asked how it was to work there and I told them that co-workers were nice people, which is true, but I can't say the same for the managers and that they weren't fully honest with me. not much I could say as everybody was listening there so. The difference is that she was offered an internship, I was offered a job from the very start so unless they promise her that, I don't think she'll hope for more

More than likely, that's what it was for, along with the same promise of more pay after X amount of time (that will never come).

But, yea, hopefully you warned her. =P

I hope you can solve the unemployed situation and find a job with better conditions. I've also had to work without contract and it's real crap. I also went there one day and told them "I'm here just to get my things, solve the remaining problems yourselves". Good luck, mate.

I did a similar thing recently...was interviewing for a new job today. Market is kind of tough right now, but I'm hoping to find something soon.

Hang in there...you're not alone, and you'll find the right thing eventually!

Annnd that's worker exploitation. It happens with saddening frequency in jobs that inspire a lot of passion, like being an artist or developing games, because the people in charge know they can get away with it. You were right to leave, even if it wasn't under the circumstances you wanted. They absolutely deserve to be abandoned if they're underpaying you and can't be bothered to give you even a temporary contract. Depending on where you work, it was probably illegal, too.

If you get that recommendation letter, it'll open more paths for you. And once you find a job that actually treats you right, you'll wonder why you ever considered staying. :)

I once worked for people at a design studio who treated me like total shit. I was taking their shit because I needed the money, but the money was only half of what my skills are worth, but I figured I'd take it since they promised my pay would double after my trial period. I was promised the initial pay rise after 3 months and it never happened. I ended up getting "laid off" with an "it's not you, it's us. we can no longer afford a third designer" but I know it's because I complained. The boss came back off her maternity leave early. I was one of two designers doing all the work for the studio while the boss was having a baby. I figured that they were probably always going to get rid of me once she returned to work and pretended that it was a permanent contract, but how could I prove it? They couldn't fire me because I did nothing wrong. They got rid of me legally before the end of the 6 months trial period in my contract. They couldn't give me a bad reference either because I did do the work and worked hard despite their behaviour. They talked bad about every designer that had been in my position before me, so that was a really bad sign. They appeared to be employing new designers for busy periods and firing them during the quiet months of the year. Worse for them, I actually knew one of those designers that they called "shit," but she was damn good. Her work was awesome.

I learned something. NEVER let anyone undervalue your work. As soon as you do this, you are making little of yourself.

You made the right decision and now you have some experience that you can use to get another job. I wish you the best of luck for the future. It will be okay.
