So I worked at a newspaper and I really like the job. Thing is I didn't have a contract and I was working for 1/4 of what I should be earning and under the promise of a contract. They always gave me a date and when that date came they changed until they simply said they don't know when they will offer me a contract. As much as I was pleased with the job I felt like they were taking advantage of me and didn't really care about me.

I can't stop thinking I made the wrong decision but i don't know how much will they keep doing that if I had stayed.

I am now unemployed and sad.

Edit: As many suggested, the smart thing to do was to look for a job before quitting and I absolutely agree but I am a sad piece of bread you can't ask me to be smart. I was really stressed and reaching to some people close to the managers (who will never see me) and they didn't got answers either. I was very frustrated and depressed about how I was being treated so I didn't think it clearly, to give you an idea, I went to work the last day until the lady who will give me answer came and after she said there were no news I just asked if I can get a recomendation letter and left at the middle of the shift.

I also want to thank everybody for their comments and support, I may not answer to many but I've read them all.

Technically, you were already unemployed as having no contract. Is there is anything you can do legally to make their behavior visible ? Would speak to another newspaper about the fraud would lend you a place, a real one with a contract ?

You have earned great experience there and I am pretty sure you will be able to find another job to apply that experience, in a company that actually knows your value. Keep strong!

1/4 of what you wanted to earn? That seems ridiculous...
Sounds like there must be other jobs you can get then if that's the case.

Thanks for the giveaway XD

That doesn't sound like a situation you wanna be in employment-wise - keep your head up and start looking for something better, I'm sure it will come sooner rather than later :)

You did the right thing. There is a whole industry nowadays built on bullshitting people on a future contract when all they are doing is using slave labour.
I hope you find a new job soon.

I think you would feel a lot worse knowing you let them use you. This is better.

You done the right thing.

What i learned from all my work places in my life are that you better have no job, and looking for one where you get respected, as to have such a job where you treated like you are nothing worth.

better unemployed than a slave. because that's what you were by the sound of it.

being paid poorly and having no real contract basically meant you had no future.
can't be worse now, can it?

also if they treat you like shit that won't change even after they give you a contract.
you did the right thing.

Sounds a lot like my first "unpaid internship". I worked in my boss's office space in his 4 bedroom house. I only worked 2 months, 2 hours a day, just tracking his side business's finances. It was good enough to just add to my experience and give me a letter of recommendation.

You did the right thing and I'm sure I would have done the same.

I entered as an intern but, as I said, under the promise of a contract. i was supposed to be an intern for 1-2 months until i got used to the job and learned from other person. 2 months later they gave him vacation and I took care of the entire work 3 more months. he recently came back from vacation and I was nearly 6 months there waiting for a contract that never came. i also worked 5 hours on best days but sometimes I'll stay like 8 hours, which I guess is normal but being a newspaper, we stayed until 1-2 in the morning.

That's rough working so hard at literally the same level as the guy on vacation 😬. I was also verbally promised a full-time job at first, but I kind of already knew in my head he wasn't going to keep his promise. Thanks for sharing your personal life.

Don't regret it. Life is too short for having regrets. You have all the free time in the world but you mustn't waste it. You should try some courses on UDEMY which suit your interests and area of expertise. You will have better skills when you apply for your next job. Good luck.

Here is a list of links of free UDEMY courses shared on net-load.com site:

Thanks. i actually knew udemy as i took an after effects class a while ago (which has nothing to do with my profession, i just like editing) but i didn't think of it. I'm also interested in searching for new areas as publicity or forensic so I'll take a look

There's one more thing you can do while you are searching for jobs. You can send some articles and stories to some random newspapers or magazines about your personal experiences through email along with information about your correspondence address. If they publish it it, you may earn some bucks to reduce the burden of piling bills.
You can start a blog or a website about your experience in the newspaper industry so that the those who are newbies in the industry can learn from your experience You can accumulate some ad revenues there. But, DON'T target your previous employer because it will diminish even end your chances of future jobs.
Being in newspaper industry you must have made some contacts. Unless you were surrounded by backstabbers, contacts will always come in handy when you are looking for jobs. I know most people will simply decline you or make sure that you wind up in much worse place than before, but it never hurts to try.
You will be sad and frustrated if you have enough time for it. Keep yourself busy and this period will pass before you know it. Good Luck.

Yeah, quitting a job you like won't always feel 'right', but I believe you didn't have much options.
Don't fret over it. The decision was made for a good reason.
I hope you can find something good soon, Sadwich.

Life has time to rest.
Even if you inadvertently rest for decades, the earth turns.
It's okay. A good day will come again.=͟͟͞͞( っ'Θ')╮ =͟͟͞͞🌏 roll!?

I also quit my job (I was an office rat) and I'm unemployed for a month now but what I can tell you my team was great and my supervisor was also great but 2 bosses above my supervisor were dicks and still are so there was no reason to stay after 2 years and 2 months of working there as they were making changes for the worse and did not listen to anyone who worked there.

Find a new job and new good people to work with and move on. No point in staying in a place where you feel bad.

from someone who quit after 10 years: good decision.
there are 2 things to keep in mind. being happy/enjoying what you do, and be respected/earn accordingly.

even if you don't have these two now, you're adding experience...

(sorry for any bad english)

Unfortunately this practice is becoming way too common and you did the right thing for yourself by letting it go. At the end of the day, getting paid a paltry fraction of what you would under contract doesn't pay the hefty bills you may have incurred (such as student loans or medical debt for example), and will eventually outweigh the joy if all you're getting is the runaround. Best thing to do is take the work experience that you've gained and look for something else that will pay you a competitive wage... only it never hurts to be open to new opportunities along the way. 😉

Hang in there. It does get better!

Looks like a really shitty company. Maybe you should looked for another job before quitting, but I think you did something that was inevitable.

I've been unemployed for over an year now and it is terrible. The bills are screaming at me. Hopefully, we'll both find something soon enough.

You got to see how things are and you got to experience professional life So now when you apply for a job at a new place, you have some edge over other candidates who have no work experience. Unpaid internships are normal but it sucks that you were given hope of a contract because of which you stuck to that place. They played dirty, and you made the right decision to move on. Best of luck with the job hunt.
