So, I just read this article http://uk.games.ign.com/articles/122/1223357p1.html and I asked myself if I became blunt or more aggressive after playing games like CoD etc. and I think that the politicans aren't completely wrong. But what do you think?
Are the games guilty to train murderers or is it our society?

Edit:
Well for me it is much more satisfying to kill guards in Revelations ( when I'm angry ) than killing online other guys in games like MW3 or BF3. I mainly play those games together with some friends.

By the way: There are rumours that Black Ops 2 will be announced on May 2nd! :D

As someone said, it's not the games that make us violent. It's the lag.

this is bullshit, sensationalist bullshit... it was bullshit since 90s, and still is...
Games doesn´t make you a violent psycho killer; life, people and mental issues makes you a psycho killer...

Yes, because violence didn't exist before videogames.
Oh, c'mon, fuck all those ignorant politicians.

Or murder... Murder didn't happen before video games, especially not in the bible.

A videogame IS violence simply because you and all mankind has survival instinct: what's the meaning of videogames?Winning. How do you win?Defeting other people. How do you that?By killing them in a virtual way (well, not all videogames are like that but ehy can we define Dear Ester a game?). Have you ever heared of a game in which you actually kill someone in real life?If the answer is no, videogames are the cause of nothing, just a way of entertaiment and fun.

In other words: videogames is a way to not being agressive in real life.

Debate OVER.

Video games make you a violent killer because you kill people in video games.
Just like people who watch way too much porn will always get loads of women.
Or like people who watch Scrubs are certified to give a mammary exam. I've watched every episode, by the way.

Ladies.

...Gentlemen? Anything? I'm desperate.

Neural disturbances are not caused by video-games, but by traumas that the person experienced through his/her life. Video-games can even help them on relieving all that they carry, but they are not the main cause.

There has been no scientific correlation between games of any sort and murder or otherwise violent tendencies and they have been looking for this link for DECADES. There has always been and always will be psychopaths that will kill and maim people for the joy of it. Ive played games my entire life, mostly FPS games and am a rather gentle person. I get upset like everyone else, but I am probably the least violent person I know. The most I do when I get pissed off is yell really loud. Of course this is all anecdotal but still.

God Gacy might have been normal if it wasn't for his nintendo. Also don't rile up the idiots there are loads of horrible things about the gamer community and games such as rampant misogyny glorification of the military and violence in general but this is more of a reflection of our current screwed up morals and views our system. The game industry is just following suit.
And yes violent video games, movies, and media tend to affect people and yes it might make you more prone to violence, if it didn't why did governments invest in propaganda and just in case you haven't noticed it a lot of our media is designed to push an agenda.

I have a hard time finding out if you're sarcastic or serious. You do know that propaganda is strictly a piece of information manipulated for any purpose (not just making your country/krabby patties look attractive; you can also make the enemy look stupid)?

But you were beginning to raise a good point... video games about war in general tend to glorify war. I've never been in one mind you, but reading what civilians in a warring country have to say is depressing, to say the least. Nothing like what Call of Duty makes it look like.

It's not the game's fault that some people have fragile minds.

I believe anyone with a fragile mind can do wrong with whatever any type of brain stimulant whether it be a video game, a book, a song, ect.

So in my opinion, somewhat yes. People with fragile minds can become serial killers, but then again it the reason behind it can be anything, not just video games.

() * - I'm not sure if that's the right word, but it's the only one that can to my mind.

Thats a load of bull... Do people really not read other news articles... I remember reading like 3-5 months ago why violent video games are good and the research has been backed by some pretty good universities. It was in san jose mercury news, if I find the article I'll post the link.

try finding actual studies news reports do a horrible job of actually reporting on science. And as much as I do enjoy video games there is a connection between media and social behavior.

Correct. My two cents thrown in on top: Mentally stable people will probably not be affected significantly by any video games, even an excessive amount of these. However, people with less mental stability or those suffering from pre-existing conditions MAY have those conditions exacerbated by violence or other conduct found in video games.

If someone is mentally shit fucked then yes I do believe that a video games can push them thinking murder is alright but I don't think that'll make a normal person want to 360 noscope any noob scrub anybody. But I do think that 20 hours of faerie solitaire could make a man slip into a coma as that soundtrack is BEAUTIFUL.

For a normal person with no mental illness, I don't believe so. I've been playing video games since I was very young. Some of them violent, very very violent. But that doesn't mean I'm any more violent in real life myself. Sure, I'm probably a little more desensitized to blood and violence in comparison to somebody who probably hasn't played gory and violent games, but that can't be helped if all you see is blood, gore, and violence in a bunch of games. It starts to feel like that feeling when you see something that isn't totally new.

Besides, if video games really turned people into serial killers, then all those action movies should be turning people into serial killers too. Most people can tell the difference between a video game and real life, that one is make believe and the other has real consequences.

Yes, I believe they do. Charles Manson would be fine had he not played OXO (a variation of Tic-Tac-Toe). Or had he not played Tennis for Two there would never have been a problem, and maybe he would have grown up to be a great artist.

On a side note, I feel stupid. I had a woman come in to my store (Cincinnati) into the Apple Department, and she in passing for some reason mentions she is of the Maddox family. So she was either talking about Manson, or the baseball player.

As a serial killer, I believe games do not provoke serial murdering. Video games do, however, provoke heat-of-the-moment killing. Serial killing is a very fine art that incorporates many different aspects of life, and video-gamers just don't have the brilliance, patience, or handle on real-life situations that go into murdering multiple people without getting caught.
