You get items, and they dont have to be playing the game. They can run it in the cmd window.
They dont even need to connect to a idle server. They can use their own ip and do a local game all through the command window,thus using very little resources. They will get items without doing anything. The items can be sold or traded for games. But its hard to get a lot of valuable items, well i should say rare.

Well, from one particular case I think we can infere that people without premium get better items. Also let's not take into account that they can't trade nor get other than Standar quality drops. :-p

Do you by any chance know how to use the cmd to run tf2 and use ur own ip etc. If u dont is there a website with a tutorial?
I would love to know, the way i idle is just go in the game u normally would and just join a idle server

A quick google search found this.
-textmode -nosound -noipx -novid -nopreload -nojoy -sw +map "itemtest"
Add it at launch options on Steam, right click TF2 propierties, it should be somewhere around there.

You can add that command to the launch options on Steam, no need to write a .bat file.

I think you can gain more being idle in TF2 than being idle in real life.
I gained nothing yet, from both.

Items. Which you use to craft metal. 18 weapons = 1 ref. Each account gets 9-12 weapons per week and takes around 8-9 hrs to get all the drops. You could get lucky and find a hat or something too. You then use metal to get keys. Keys are getting more expensive. They are like 4-5 ref. Use keys to get games or real world money. The only way to profit off of idling is to have several accounts. With keys being 4-5 ref you need at least 6 accounts to get a key a week. Some people have like 200-300 accounts. Use a program called sandboxie to idle all the accounts at once on a text server. Sandboxie is for free but it only gives you 1 account. Buy it for like 20 dollars to idle several accounts at a time.

Oh and getting an account requires a 50 cent purchase in the Mann Co store on each new account. Meaning, you are going to have to put at least some money into Tf2 if you plan on really profiting at this point. Unless, you unbox a crate and get a lucky unusual (1% chance of hitting the lottery). I have all the crap I have from spending a lot of time trading. I've been at this crap for a long time and I am pretty burned out, honestly.

First off, I fucking hate Caillou. He is a little bitch.
Secondly, the system is what it is to reward players casually. Its why people actually hunting for stuff get burnt out. I used to be a key reseller and it is much the same. Buy x game keys for y amount, sell each key individually for y/x*15%. Ultimately the time invested doesnt hold up to the payout. Make more money bagging groceries.

The only marketable items you can get are tools and crates. Tools include paints, decal tool, name tag, but they're very rare.
Normally you just get weapons or crates. Assuming you get all weapons, 18 of them would be a refined metal which is about .35-.40. Typically you get 10 or so items per week, but it can be more. If you're really lucky you can get a hat which are 1.33+ ref, but they're few and far between.

No it's not, people have been idling much before traders started inflating key prices. The price was very steady at 2, then 2.33, then 2.66 refined, the reason for increase usually being events during which people have more incentive to open crates, such as Halloween.
Once keys started going for 2.77 and more, nothing could halt the increase in price. The more they cost, the faster their price rises. It's ridiculous.

and less expensive as tf2-idling needs essentially no processing power at all (at least in console mode)

If you are Premium you can find Hats, Miscs and Weapons + Crates.
My Backpack is worth 128 Dollar

You get weapons (or hats) from idling
weapons = scrap
scrap = reclaimed metal
reclaimed metal = refined metal
refined metal = keys
keys = currency in the tf2 economy

No. But as others have said. It's difficult to profit from it. It's not a money tree.

I see hundreds of groups specially made for being idle on TF2, and I wonder what they win by doing that...
I heard they get cases, but cases are useless without keys, arent they? Do you earn marketable items? and do you get them 100% or it is just random? I might be interested on being idle if I can get a profit out of it ._.
