EDIT : I forgot to check when the GOG Summer Sale ended and Valve has been pretty good about not stepping on GOG's toes. They traditionally wait until their sale ends before they start the Steam Sale.
EDIT 2: I was about to just write things off until next week but thanks to some commenters here, it looks like it IS going to happen today.

I'm really on the fence in the last few hours before the sale starts, which is supposed to be tomorrow. I wanted to save up for a Steam Deck but I myself have had some health related issues which may lead to medical expenses which may lead to less disposable income and all that terribleness.

Just wondering what people are looking for to for this year's sale.

At the moment I do have my eye on a few bigger named games if the discounts were decent, I just don't see the games I REALLY want getting anything more that 20% off at best (Mount & Blade 2 for example)

Here's an obligatory Level 2 GA and sorry if I'm jumping the gun and it doesn't happen this Thursday the 23rd.

PS - If there's a chance that I might need a root canal and also that I recently injured myself at work and that I have no clue what the future holds for me in the immediate future after my sick time is expired, please for the love of God/Science, someone please talk me out of being stupid with my money. It's okay you can get mean if you want, I deserve it.

What Kind of Sale Shopper are You (at least with this sale)?

View Results
Quality over Quantity: You plan on buying a number of bigger budget games if the discounts are good enough because you know you'll play them and get your money's worth.
Quantity over Quality: You keep a ridiculous number of games on your Steam Wishlist (please don't look at mine) and you plan on buying a slew of smaller priced games that get the really big discounts (90%-ish) which may or may not be connected to an ever shrinking attention span and/or to a desire to just plain collect a large number of game.
Not Up for it This Year: You might see what the free trading card/store credit gimmicks are this year, but you either can't or won't be wasting any more money this year what with gas prices. food prices, real life stuff that matters and all that.

A more expensive game doesn't necessarily mean a better one. Way too often huge AAA titles bore the hell out of me, and most of the gems are found in the indie segment. Therefore, no suitable poll answer for me.

Yeah I get that. I feel like the amount of money I spend on a game very rarely factors into how good it ends up being or how much I enjoy it.

I'd probably still vote "quality over quantity" though. Just because I think if a game has reached a point where it's getting a 90% discount like this poll says and I still haven't bought it....how much do I really want it?

Medical expenses first, obviously.
Set aside a limit of $15 and pick some games you'll genuinely want to play, then just put the rest up for medical. It's not like the summer sale is the only time games get discounted. Your health comes first!

Yeah you're right I know. And setting aside the 15 bucks, that's a good idea. I have about 9 in my Steam Wallet. I shouldn't go too far over that if I want to take care of what needs to come first.

Got any games in your library that you haven't played yet, or that you haven't played enough? Or that you'd like to play some more? There are also free games every week on EGS not to mention the thousands of free to play games on Steam.

On the other hand, if you don't take care of your teeth, you'll be drinking spaghetti milkshakes someday...

Haha. I do like spaghetti and I LOVE milkshakes, just not spaghetti milkshakes. Point taken.

Now that you mention it, I still have never played Dragon's Dogma and have always meant to. They just announced a sequel so maybe now's the time.

PS - Dragon's Dogma is 84% off for another hour and a half ... sorry I didn't mention that sooner but I just saw it.

I kinda wanna pickup Biomutant and GhostWire Tokyo, but suspect they'll be cheaper on bundle sites than on Steam, like they are currently on Fanatical. But I also have a backlog, I never need to buy another game in my life. But it's never about what we need when it comes to gaming, right?

Fanatical has been crushing it lately. I actually just picked up the Season Pass to Sniper Elite 4 there for 5 bucks, then I got both the game and the pass for number 3. The newest game in the series is currently out of both my price range and what I feel comfortable running specs wise. In a way, after that and with the bundles I've gotten at Fanatical lately, I've kinda already had my Summer Sale. I don't need to buy anything else right now.... except maybe a new controller.... okay I'll stop now.

Fuck health issues. I've had my fair share of those, and they suck. I hope yours aren't too terrible.

I'll probably not get too much for myself during the sale. I've already got so many games, and not nearly enough time to play them. I'm more interested in maybe getting something good to give away. There are a few things that I've been considering for various threads and groups.

See that's what I need to be thinking more about --- what I can give and not what I want. I need to look for some non-bundled games that are on wishlists and see how that looks in comparison to the discounts when they show up.

I just want to chime in and verify that the root canal and being injured at work are separate yeah?

When I was younger (holy crap it was a long time ago) I had my teeth knocked out at work. Had some pretty expansive work done to repair them that wouldn't have been possible without worker's compensation. Ended up with an exposed nerve for about 3 months and finally when I picked up a lawyer they decided to start paying for stuff. 7 root canals and crowns later, I still wish I wouldn't have gotten my freaking teeth knocked out at work.

Anyway, my point in all of this. You mentioned injury at work, and I am hoping that it is nothing severe. However, even in some of the non-severe cases like mine you can get reimbursed if your injury is preventing you from working. Honestly though, sometimes it's not worth the hassle depending on how long the injury will be keeping you out of work.

My philosophy on spending on games is generally this: If I am sick and home and find something in particular that I want to play, I play it. Generally, need something to fill the void so to speak. Otherwise, I wait for discounts and just stock up on games that I know I will play (or really really thought I would play).

If money is tight though a budget always comes first, gaming is more than just a hobby for me so there's a monthly allotment just for that in mine.

Good luck with your health though! Seems to be an ever-present issue I have any more :(

Wow that is horrible! That is so awful. Part of me wants to know the details but most of me doesn't want you to relive that moment and neither do I want to see any of that in my mind as you describe it.

No these are separate issues. The teeth thing is from just not flossing. Makes me sound like a total wimp by comparison. I have cavities in between my teeth just from not taking better care of myself. And the work thing is from just lifting something heavy and twisting. Lifting with my back and twisting my back, again just not being careful.

Add this to the matter of me thinking about video games with all this stuff going on and I'm starting to get an image of a really irresponsible and just childish person. I'm not liking myself a whole lot right now. But I'm putting the bat down and not beating myself up too much more. Frankly I can't handle the beating in my current condition.

But back to what happened to you, thank you for taking the time to tell the story and I really really wish that hadn't happened to you. You did help me gain a much more realistic outlook for the day though and for that, again, thank you.

Oh crap. I hope everything will be okay with your back. When I joined SG, I was in bits at the time. I was giving away games, entering for games, buying bundles and not actually playing any of them because I couldn't. But only spent small amounts, which was okay. I was in so much pain that I couldn't sit on front of a computer to play. I got hit with a bill for €13,500 for the back surgery in 2019. (No insurance). Then I got cancer at the end of 2021. I'm doing okay now, still have some BS with the back. But let's just say I know all about health issues and how much they suck.

Just be sensible. You can have a small monthly budget for treating yourself whether that's games or other treats and never go over it.

Sorry for the delayed response!

As far as the workplace accident it wasn't really scary or anything. I mean, I guess to some people it might be. I was just angry. In fact, still a little bitter if you couldn't tell and it happened like 17 years ago lmao!

I'll give you a "brief" rundown just because I don't think a lot of people go through what I went through. I worked in banquets at a rather large hotel chain. I was young so it was easy to take advantage of me and while everyone (with the exception of my manager) went home I was asked to stay late. Real, real late. So, about 3am, four hours after my shift was supposed to end, I am still working. I go into one of our storage rooms and some of the temporary employees we had hired earlier in the night had stacked our tables wrong. They're supposed to stack like this | | | | | and they all looked like this \ \ \ \ . This is a huge problem because it is dangerous, and I need like 60 of them setup so I can finish my shift. I touch (literally touch) the table on the end and by then it was already too late. About 300 tables fall over and I have just enough time to turn my face a little. They hit me right below the nose with such force that it lifted me in air and pinned me against the stacks of chairs that were behind me. So, I dangle there in air for a minute, hit the table that is stuck against me on the corner as hard as I can so that it turns and I am no longer pinned. And I get back to work. As I am rolling the table out to setup for the next event and I happen to reach up to assess the damage... My teeth crumble like glass in my hands. Needless to say, I told my manager that he could set up the rest his self and that I was leaving (I was a little more colorful). He said I had to go to the hospital because it was a worker's comp injury (really glad I listened). There's obviously a lot more to it, but that's the simplest form of what happened. If it hadn't happened to me, it would've been whoever touched the tables next. Thankfully I was strong enough that I wasn't just pinned there for hours.

As far as being a wimp. Take it from an old man (34 lol). Take care of your body while you can! I have already had 2 hip surgeries, a shoulder surgery, a foot surgery (I am due for a surgery on the other foot as soon as I am able), and countless broken bones. All of my stuff is from stupid stuff too. Like, being overly aggressive during football. Eventually if you do not take care of yourself it'll catch up with you.

As far as not liking yourself. Lol...
I know you probably weren't being extremely literal, but everyone suffers differently. Everything from physical pain to mental wellbeing. Your back and teeth might be the biggest thing you have going on right now and that is more than okay. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Don't ever hold your flame up to another and feel yours doesn't shine the same. Every fire is different and that is okay. Again, I am not stating this here because I truly believe that you believe you are a terrible person and what not, but because it's something I think more people should be aware of. I just came from a thread on reddit that, I have to tell you... Broke my heart in so many ways. Everyone thinks they have the answers for others! No one truly knows what it's like to be you. Which is great! You can live, you can learn. You're not confined in the, "I know" but the, "I seek knowledge". The back and teeth thing? To someone else, the weight of the world might feel like it's crushing down on them for it. To you, we're here talking about video games :) both are totally okay.

I REALLY apologize for getting all philosophical and what not. If I thought that you were childish, I wouldn't have taken the time to post at all. I don't really have the time or energy to deal with children rofl. You do you and just be happy doing it :) and buy yourself a video game!

You dont need to spend a lot of money to enjoy good games. Focus on your treatment first.
Also, judging by the number of games in your library, you should have some undiscovered gems that you haven't touched yet. Why dont spend some time this year to play and find them instead? :)

Maybe you're right, it would be nice. I changed the title and added the note about GOG because for the longest time that was the case, or at least that's what people said. But the digital storefront marketplace isn't the same kind of arena anymore, it's all moving to digital, so overlapping sales are just unavoidable at this point.

I don't know if I'll buy anything. I don't really have big games I need to play so much that I buy them at any price, and I usually end up buying a few cheap games that I very likely forget about. Also, huge backlog.

I got way more games in my backlog that I "need" to play than such games that I'd still have to buy.

But as my birthday is also during the sale, I probably will buy some quality titles.
Could be something new like God of War or Elden Ring or something that I already have on my Switch like Hades or Dead Cells but which I also want to have on my Steam Deck.

Best wishes for your health. And your Steam Deck. :-P

You need to ask yourself: "Of the OVER 1300(!!) games on my wishlist. Which game would I play right here, right now and not do anything else at all."
I see ALOT of <5h games in your list of 1700 games you already own. Since you didn't play them further: Imaging what you could saved for not buying them (yes, even when they are on sales, from a bundle or whatever). You paid money to have a +1 in your library and even put some of your precious life time into it, just to figure out "meh, not my kind of tea".
If you are short on either, life time or money, better reduce the numbers of games to play, to those that will knock your socks off.

I am an achievement hunter and played some aweful games BUT I very much enjoyed the way to the 100% (discussing with others on the forum for most optimal way, reading up on tricks to lessen grind etc.). I activated some pretty shitty games and unlocked a achievement or two and are now stuck to complete them (because once they are in the calculation they will remain, even if you delete them).
If you are not an unhealthy hunter like me than you have no reason to keep up with subpar game standards. Clean up your library (sort or hide things you dont want to touch) and trim your wishlist to games you REALLY want to play.

Always remember: You invest life time while playing the game, so you should receive at least a buttload of enjoyment out of it. If you pay to idle away that little time we all have its almost the same as smoking (pay money to make your life worse in every aspect).

Only treat yourself to good games and enjoy them :-)
You are worth it!

Thank you for taking the time to write such a positive message. I'm not sure about what all I deserve, but it felt nice hearing it.

As far as playing what I have, I need to play Dragon's Dogma at some point. The numbers say that I've played it. I haven't. Those were numbers just from farming cards. I also have a LONG way to go to finish Rogue Legacy 2 and I'm pretty happy to see that game up at the top of the Roguelike charts - it deserves to be there and is a ton of fun; even better than the original.

The two new games I'm looking at getting right now are either
1) Jupiter Hell, a more traditional roguelike style of game and a love letter to the DOOM games.
or
2) Aliens: Fireteam Elite, a game that plays a LOT like the Zombie Army games that spun-off from the Sniper Elite series, both of which I love. The only downside to picking this is that online play has dropped way off for it, and although I don't think not being able to find a game online would keep me from enjoying it, Jupiter Hell is a single player experience and not susceptible to the whims of online communities that go from one game to the next faster than I am able to afford to. I was thinking about checking out that Core Keeper game but before I pulled the trigger it seemed like people had moved on from that and a lot of people had, maybe a lof of the same, jumped into playing V Rising which I'll admit looks fun to me.

I really do want that 'knock my socks off' kinda feel to whatever I end up getting. I think I should maybe limit myself to just one game this sale and focus on looking for that level of experience. If I had a better system I'd get [Horizon: Zero Dawn]).(https://store.steampowered.com/app/1151640/Horizon_Zero_Dawn_Complete_Edition/) or Vermintide 2. I loved Horizon and the first Vermintide on PS4.

I'm really pretty broad in my tastes. I say I prefer indie games but I do like really big games, RDR2 and any of the Yakuza games are fun for me. I like pixel graphics but I'll play anything my machine can run. And I like horror games but I also like open worlds and my number one focus is always value for my money. I like long playthrough times and would take an open-world with minimal story and more gameplay hours over an enthralling storyline.

Okay I'm gonna stop rambling now and say once again that I'm open to suggestions of any kind.

And thanks again. Whitelisted you (be on the lookout for some WL GA's)

I can understand the pain of not being able to play everything you might set your eyes on. After I played through every entry in the Batman Arkham series (its still a miracle that my laptop was able to play Arkham Knight) I wanted to tackle the Tomb Raider series and Horizon Zero Dawn. The first Tomb Raider went ok-ish (the fan was already doing overtime work) but for Rise of the Tomb Raider I feared my laptop would die of overheating (since it happend a few years back while playing Heroes of the Storm). So I have a few games on the backlog that are just sitting in the category "Gosh I need a PC not a laptop anymore".

But seeing it from the other way around: I have a couple of games already set, which I would love to play and enjoy.

My all-time recommendation is always: Outer Wilds. If you like exploration and figuring stuff out, this game will be the holy grail for you.

Even tho my blueheart is not as valuable as your, I hope you still like a place on there as well :)
Hope you have a great time!

I'm in conflict between jumping for this sale or saving up for a Steam Deck. I see no point in getting more games if I can't just wait for a while to get my Steam Deck first. I've been smashing all my savings on sales and bundles that I'm not sure I'll have the money to get the Steam Deck this July to September. If it's in September I might be able.

This is the best solution page I've seen for the summer gimmick thingy. You won't be able to search for the games that solve each riddle even if you know the answers.
You have to search for them by clicking "show more" in each category the games fall under.
This page will tell you what categories to look in.
