To me it looks like okay, i mean, i drunkenly buy 3 years of monthly in 2018, looks like a bargain if you check the plans. (edit: alright, maybe not exactly, but they sure do want us to stay subscribed with that classic thing)

I have been buying monthly every month, donating most of the games since I already have those or I am not interested ones. We'll see how this changes things...

Probably the legal department felt the heat about lootboxes, and the marketing department found a way to spin it in a way that will please the financial deparment.

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned this. With the recent EU anti-lootbox sentiment, I do wonder if HB saw the writing on the wall and decided to remove the 'gambling' element.

Next maybe pre-orders will be banned by the EU - I mean surely it's gambling whether you get a good game or a shit game on release? /s

Sadly I'm not. Many people don't realize the toxicity of lootboxes and of persuasive technologies in the first place. That's how they still work so well, after all:

are you serious? look at the options. lite= pay 5$ for just the trove and 10% on the store. no games.
basic= pay 3$ more than the classic to get only 3 out of 10.
premium= pay 20 dollars( 8 dollars more than now) and get 9 games out of 10.

All three options are so absurdly bad that everyone would choose the classic one. So they force you to stay subscribed. This is blackmailing. I bet that is illegal. At least in Europe.

You are not forced to do anything, you can pause any time you want.

Regarding the prices. we don't know what the games will be like. If it's 5 AAA games per month then it would be worth the $20 in a heartbeat. If it's 10 x $1 Steam ripoffs then it won't be worth it.

they force you to stay subscribed. all 3 other options are intentionally so bad that you have no choice but the classic. So, take this one or nothing. and if you come back after 3 month you have to pay 66.67% more becaus fuck you. thats what i see.

Subscribed is not the same as paying every month. You can subscribe and pause every month for a year and not pay a cent and still remain on classic.

Yes, the pricepoint is higher, however you also know ALL the games that will be offered in advance, and while lower tiers get less games, they are freely able to pick which ones they want from the selection that month. If the value of the price per game (or the selection available) is low for an individual, they can skip that month without penalty, or adjust which tier they want to pay for accordingly.

Consider : How many games outside of the preview titles in the current monthly setup are "games I actually want" for the majority of subscribers? How many of them are redeemed on the basis of maybe playing them whenever they get around to the backlog? How many are just given away as they are unwanted? The proposed model takes away the gamble / randomness element, and lets the buyer have specific control over what value they get from the subscription on a per-month basis.

Yes, blackmailing is illegal, however this is not blackmail. Just as increasing prices or lowered value of service is not a 'scam'. You are not being extorted. You are not being threatened. You may be able to assert it is manipulative but then what would you call hiding the full bundle contents and disallowing purchases after full reveal? They have to create a compelling product, and the mystery factor plus titles of interest was their previous recipe, the current one is a more open "You decide how many titles you want out of the upcoming selection, and the price will scale depending on how many you want". Yes, the pricepoint is steeper, but premium ($20?) is nine games that you get to decide whether are worth the cost or not before purchase, whereas previously we got six or seven, of which some were usually already on steep sales, or a small indie project with little selling power. Charming, but not a great 'investment' for your money. Whether the new system is a better value for money depends entirely on what selections they drum up.

As for the lower price for existing subscribers? Would you feel better if they simply disregarded current subscribers and people with prepaid multi-year subscriptions? Allowing customers to continue with a legacy package pricepoint is often an unnecessary courtesy, and while you may think this is so-called "blackmail", it would be in their greater interest to disallow people to sign up to the monthly now just to let them have the smaller recurring charge. They would get more profit by only allowing people with several months of recurring subscription to get that ongoing $12 price. You're projecting whole-cloth predatory intention where it honestly doesn't seem to fit.

i am concerned about fairness here. Just imagine all new customers get screwed and have to pay 66.67% more than the veteran customers and dont even get the same amount of games. How is that fair and how on earth do they want to reach new customers? Just imagine this with other retailers or companies. Would you pay 66% more for a inferior service just because you discovered it later than others?

Guess I knew a day like this would come. I am also guessing the change in packages will allow them to put whatever DRM they want into the bundles. I know the monthlies have had uplay and blizzard keys before, but usually only 'big' games. I kind of get the feeling this new 'choice' model will mean they also get a 'choice' of what DRM they use. I think things may get a whole lot more 'epic'. I'll see how it goes, but honestly, if the games they were offering every month were not what I wanted, I'd sooner just save the money and get games I want on sale.

I agree. The games probably won't be mostly Steam anymore.

what I fear is that they might stop putting AAA games like the early unlocks.
other stores don't have the library steam has so I don't think there'll be too many epic only bundles

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah that's true, but up until now they've only put other DRM when it's publisher based, like ubisoft or activision drm. I suspect there may come a point where given the option on a game that is on multiple stores, they may choose more often to skip Steam, especially as they sell games on the other platforms in their own store. But time will tell I guess.

Nothing. (Expect maybe that you wont' be able to get classic in future)

You only keep classic if you keep your subscription and the moment you stop you lose the access to the classic plan forever. This way they can discourage people from canceling.
At least that's how I see it.

If it's as you said they'll surely make the Classic a comeback for a limited time every now and then. People are going to complain like crazy when they realize they need to pay more, and probably end up skipping it.

Maybe, but I believe they actually want to keep Classic super limited to scare people away from unsubscribing.

I wonder with this though since it is a choice now will there me more then the normal amount of games that will release monthly since otherwise haunch the top plan or classic if you get the 9-10 games doesn’t really give you much of a choice. But let’s say you get 15 games a month so maybe the cheaper plan could be worth it if the games a better and you only like 3 of the offering instead of say taking a risk and only like early unlocks but not the rest.

I have like till I think feb or March before I will be billed not sure what I will do.

okay... so I am not sure if I get it, but to make it clear. I am currently in a "plan" where I pay 12USD a month that I choose if I want to pause or not if they reveal early access.
That means I am currently in classic plan, if I understand correctly.
With this new thing aka Humble Choice... Let's say it starts next month. Will I be able to see what games are there for december and decide if I want to pay or not? Or how should I understand it, because I am confused af right now

Good marketing. "Hey I pay every month, to don't lose Classic. Before I don't buy every month, but now I want to save 'more' money."
Haha
.
I mean good to know what you buy. 8$ more it's still okay for quality games. ;)
We'll see.

EDIT: What's about DLCs? Count these as number of "game"?

you know whats even funnier. they put the choice thing in as a feature but they are so stupid that they want 15 dollars for 3 games. But logically people choose the classic one which gives you once again no choice at all. Even if you like only 3 games out of 10 you will have to get all or none. XD

so if i got this right....if you wanna keep getting all the games you gotta always pay 12 dlls (No matter if there is only either crap or stuff you don't want)...

And if you don't you gotta pay 14 dlls for 3 out of 10 games?

cuz i only subscribe for months i want one or two games of the early unlock...

So it doesn't really change a thing for me...unless they don't let us see what are the 10 games of the month that is....

I guess i can wait until bundling becomes great again. 193 games on my backlog can hold out for a long time and i get many free games because of my YT channel and curator too. I am fine. While I was sub since the beginning I decided already months ago, that I'll stop my sub once my final yearly sub expires.

It is clear developers, publishers want to push up bundle prices a bit so shared prices get closer to sale prices which could affect the grey market negatively. But there are just way too many games. The real top games will never be bundled and the second line and lower sooner or later will start again bundle wars.

To cover some questions that arised (response from HB support):

Classic will have a total of 10 games, out of the current maximum of 10 games. So, this means that you actually receive all of the games currently planned.
You can pause your month at any time! If the current month isn't appealing you can pause. This is similar to our current method, except you see all of the games immediately at the start of the month instead of waiting for the unlock!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They didn't say when the autobilling would be, did they?

Will there still be a time between revealing all 10 games, and unlocking them, during which we can pause? This is all still rather unclear, I think.

From what I've learned from support you don't have to do anything – just don't cancel and you'll be automatically Classic subscriber. You might want to contact support to be 100% sure though. You can also switch to month-to-month plan instead of annual plan. Here's what support has told me about it:

(...) you are able to cancel and resubscribe at the month-to-month plan so that when your subscription ends in January it will automatically renew your Classic plan at the monthly rate.

January is when my plan ends, so exchange it with a month your plan ends.
