As you may or may not know, there's another horrible minigame attached to the current Steam sales. Unlike previous events, this one actually gives you a chance to win a game! If you haven't read the rules, let me summarize them for you:

  • You're not winning a game.

Since every one who plays even once enters, I estimate your chance of actually winning anything about 1 in a few 100,000. It's much, much worse than any chance you'd get on SteamGifts, in any case. OK, so it's probably about the same odds as a popular public GA on SteamGifts, since they're doing 100 copies of every game (I'm still expecting on the order of 100,000 entrants per planet, although that number is made up based on Steam subscriber activity and I don't know how many people are actually playing).

I don't think that's fun. You know what I think is fun? Giving away every game on my planet planets!

Alas, I lack the giveaway slots to do all of them. And even if support wanted to help with that, there's lots of stuff on Steam I wouldn't be comfortable with giving away. I mean, how would you like Call of Duty: Ghosts - Digital Hardened Edition? It's only 5 years old, so I'm sure it's worth the $100 base price tag. And it's off on a great sale now!

Thanks for awesome giveaways! They could make drop additional cards for playing actual games rather than this minigame :P I don't even know how it looks like because Steam is dead for now for me :P

At least during the sale minigame with the teams, we could sell those blinded by chances of winning something cards and team switch tokens. That was good.

I was trying to find how many copies they were giving away, but can't find it... If it is one per planet, than it's really a fail, but totally Steam.

Thank you for creating the giveaways, at least my chances went up on those good games.

Have they stated anywhere at all the number of games they are giving away or otherwise made it possible for you to estimate the odds since you seem so confident that it's one to a few 100,000?

My rough estimate was based on the assumption that they're only giving away one copy of every game (because why do more?) But, as it turns out and clicking some more, I'm wrong: they're giving away 100 copies of every game. That's admittedly much better odds, and on par with what you'd get from a lot of public giveaways on SteamGifts.

Hmm, admittedly that's still an extremely low number compared to the amount of Steam users, so I guess you're right in the end. I guess that they'll add extra giveaways whenever a planet is exhausted though, so with some luck they might end up giving away enough copies for a reasonable amount of winners, though it's very unlikely that any individual will win anything.

As far as actually winning anything, they've got a total of 46 planets lined up, including the 5 of today, each with 4 games, so there's a total of 18,400 copies in play. Overall odds aren't that bad, although you could end up winning something you don't want, since you don't get to pick the game.
