HI all, quick question.

I had some DLC giveaways end recently (Hacker Evolution DLCs), and one of the winners had a private profile so I can't tell if he has the base game. Is it reliable that steamgifts properly filters DLC eligibility that requires the base game? I basically don't want to waste a DLC key if somebody can't use it.

Reason I ask: When I look at some of the giveaways available to me I've noticed some games show up that I already have (like Skyrim Legendary today), and also noticed some DLC that I already have (like Magicka), so I'm not confident that it's filtered. (I have steamgift options set to hide things I already own or am not eligible for). Similarly I have seen DLC available to me that I already have (Skyrim Hearthfire is a recent example). I'm not sure if I've seen DLC available to me where I don't have base game, but I'm not sure.

So basically, is it worth it to check winners for basegame/DLC when you do giveaways, or do you just let it fly? The private profile of the winner means I really can't check without them adding me on Steam (and that holds up the process of me listing another game). Also, in general, do you try to friend when a profile is private to make sure they don't already have the game?

Anyhow, just asking for what folks do in these cases. thanks for comments.

Well you generally can't enter giveaways for DLCs unless you own the base game. That being said, there have been DLCs in the past in which you could enter, but not many. I really can only think of one (part of magic the gathering).

If you weren't aware, here is what pops up when you go to a page for a DLC where you don't own the base game:

thanks. I have noticed that. Maybe I'll just go ahead and send the DLC without verifying.

I also currently see, for example, that I can enter Magicka Vietnam listing currently even though I already have the DLC.

I guess it's not worth worrying about.

yeah sorry didn't read it entirely kinda pre-occupied watching football but to answer that. I believe its because SG can't check if one owns a DLC. I think they only way to check is if you add them, go to the store page, and it'll show what friends own the DLC.

What are you talking about? Please tell me where I said you cant enter a giveaway for a DLC if you already own it. In fact, read my other post right above yours, where I said you can enter DLCs even if you already own it.

I was talking about the Walking Dead DLC. I can enter giveaways for it and I already have it.

You're well within your rights to request that they make their profile public for a short time so that you can check their credentials (base game, activation of previous wins, etc).

I find that many DLC items still allow you to enter even if you already own them, and some allow you to enter even if you don't have the base game, so definitely worth checking.

If they refuse, I would fully expect Support to grant a re-roll, and maybe even look into their sync records too...

I have a private profile, but would have no qualms about doing this. Not everyone with a private profile has "something to hide", but some do :)

I suggest always checking if your giveaway winner owns what you're giving away, whether full games or random junky dlc. Sometimes people buy a game but forget they are still entered in your giveaway. And some clowns enter giveaways with a script, and don't even know what you're giving away. :(

Please don't just send the game because someone has a private profile, or because checking is too much work. :) If we want this to stay a nice place, we all have to do our part to keep it that way... :)

You can check most games people own easily enough, but checking dlc is a hassle. Some dlc will show up in their list of games, but most won't. :(

So, first you need to add them to your Steam friend list. When they accept, go to the Steam store page for the dlc you're giving away, and pretend you're going to buy that dlc for them. In other words, click add to cart, purchase as a gift, send my gift directly through steam, and (finally!) find your giveaway winner in the list of possible gift recipients. If you see an orange "already owns blabla" they already own it. Yes, it's a hassle. If you find a simpler method, I'd love to hear about it. :)

It is expected that you will check to see if your winner already owns the game (or DLC) you are giving away. Winners who fail to respond to your attempts at contact are eligible to be re-rolled after one week. Support Staff will ask for a screenshot of your email/friend invite/chat attempts in order to verify.

The giveaways of DLC are some's not shown correctly. I have in my settings turned on that DLC where that I don't own the base game are not shown. Most recently I have had several giveaways shown of King's Bounty Warriors of the North: Valhalla Upgrade when i don't own King's Bounty Warriors of the North. This was also recently the case with command and conquer DLC.
