I haven't bought a laptop in years (2006 in fact) so you'd all be better in the know than me...

I'm thinking of getting this laptop:
Acer Aspire V5-431P-21178G50MASS

(EDIT2: Thanks to your friendly suggestions, here's another possibility:
An ASUS laptop )

Specs on the Acer:
14" (1366 x 768) Resolution with Touchscreen, Intel 2117U 1.8Ghz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVD-RW, Windows 8 64Bit
(Integrated Graphics card)

Anyone know what sort of games this could handle? I'm not expecting Crysis on integrated graphics (I have a gaming desktop with enough grunt for that) but I'm hoping to at least be able to run indie games, maybe things like Super Meat Boy, Shank, Minecraft, Terraria etc. Would it run things like Half Life 2 or other older 3D games? Simcity 4 maybe?

Does "Intel HM70 Express Chipset" tell you anything?

Any other advice or comments are much appreciated!
EDIT: After watching the video in the link, I noticed they really put the touchscreen feature front and centre in the ad. Actually the touchscreen functionality is of no or little use to me so don't assume it's the reason I picked this one out. It's more the price actually!

As a thank you, here are some giveaways!
Hell Yeah (30.01CV)
Sonic CD (0.01CV)
Sonic Spinball (0.01CV)
Commander Conquest of Americas
Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter
Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter
Atom Zombie Smasher
The Void

depends on the game. some games require better vga some other only cpu and ram (like minecraft). i have a netbook with integrated graphics and the only thing it can run is plants vs zombies. i would suggest paying a little more and get a laptop with a proper vga if you want to install some games. i have this one which can run battlefield 3 on high settings. but it all depends on the use of the laptop you want to do

I'm really just hoping it will run some games. I have a desktop which is where I will do most gaming, especially anything multiplayer. Thanks for the help!

Ask your laptop provider if you can manually switch your graphic card with those integrated graphic card.

Trust me, else you might stuck on using the intel graphic HD while having other card sitting doing nothing.

Did some searches and I guess the integrated chipset and processor is new enough that there aren't any benchmarks on it to be found. Sorry, but thanks for the giveaways!

edit: Found some stuff on the processor http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Pentium-2117U-Notebook-Processor.81886.0.html
Also it seems that the integrated chipset is based on the HD Graphics 2500 so you can check performance on that and compare it to your own.

Thanks for the info. It'll take me some time to digest the numbers though! Integrated graphics are a big unknown to me.

The integrated GPU seems to be near a HD 2000 which is absolutely terrible.
Half-Life 2 will no doubt run fine on it since it's a game from 2004, but don't expect any modern games to have playable framerates on low at 720p.

Are there any other site/stores you can buy from?

There are other places but this particular one is one of the cheaper online stores in Australia. PC Case Gear is my usual store for parts but they don't stock many laptops (link) in the budget range which is where I'm looking, though I'm sure their laptops would all be of good quality. Maybe there's one in there that stands out?

Remember I don't expect nor need it to run modern 3D games, I've got a desktop for that. It's the indies I'm interested in, like the ones mentioned in OP. I don't really know what sort of demand they put on the graphics card.

Yeah.
It's just that the HD2000 is a really shitty integrated GPU some indie games won't even run correctly like Mark of the Ninja for example.

If you're looking for a laptop that can run games decently (integrated GPU wise) intel HD 4000 is pretty good.

Thanks for the advice! I will look further into laptops with the Intel HD 4000.

Intel HD Graphics 2500 is what you're looking for.
Clicky
Don't expect to reach those 29.3 FPS of i5 though :(
I think in this price range you could find a laptop with a dedicated gpu or at least one that has Intel HD Graphics 4000 (much better than this 2500 crap)

On 2nd thought, I just noticed the touchscreen.
I guess one of the main reasons you decided to buy this laptop is this, right?

No, actually. But I like the idea of a screen that can be cleaned easily. I hate screens where once you've accidentally had a sneeze partially hit them that when you try to wipe it off it seems to damage the coating on the screen and leaves a mark.

Hmmmm, not sure if you can run indie games smoothly. The GPU is kinda weak :|

I think it should be able to run Half-Life 2 (at least on low/medium settings).

If you mean a desktop PC, I already have one, with a very nice GPU. :)

I would take the extra money your planning to spend on a touchscreen, and get a laptop with and NVIDIA mobile GPU. I know you already have a desktop with a high end GPU, but these touchscreens are useless. Your arm doesn't want to reach all the way up there, it too fatiguing. For that amount you can have a good mobile GPU- and believe me -even indies games are going to eventually want a discreet GPU.

Yeah, the touchscreen is not really a factor for me. That's why I'm getting a laptop instead of a tablet. The sturdier screen appeals to me though. I agree about the arm fatigue so including a touchscreen is probably just added cost and weight(?) for a feature I don't want. Thanks for the advice!

If possible I would avoid any Intel GPU for gaming at all.
Even for indie games, some of them require a GPU card with dedicated VRAM for it to smoothly run. For example games that are using OpenGL, which Intel GPU are terrible at. From your list of games, maybe you can run some of them in medium resolution, some with half ideal FPS.

I suggest that you are using AMD GPU instead...or anything that is not Intel GPU.

Should be able to run a handful of indie games, but some of these "retro-style" games can have deceptive sys requirements. I'd stick more to older games you haven't gotten around to yet than to newer ones, personally (I dunno its specs, but my parents' budget laptop with integrated graphics runs Oblivion and DS2 just fine, to give you an idea. And they bought that two years ago).

i have something like this
only 750gb
i5
gf 630m 1gb
8gb
and yea - you will run minecraft and simcity and other simple games - half life 2 even xD - they worked smoothly on my old laptop with intel chipset

Don't buy it. I got Acer V5 with 8gm ram and i7 3rd gen cpu. The CPU is so slow...it makes the whole comp lags most of the time.

That will depend on how you plan on using that laptop. If you want to play games, then you might want to get something better than an HD2500. If you just want to browse the internet, maybe you should go for a tablet.

You can probably get a decent i5 (3210) with a GeForce 610M that is able to run most, if not all, indie games. I used to be able to run Sleeping Dogs on my old laptop with similar build. (with a budget of around $450)

If you really insist on the touchscreen, then go for a tablet...

I also don't like any CPU that has the letter "U" in its name... they need less power, but they are also weaker. (And 1.8GHz is not impressive at all)

If you plan to do any light gaming maybe you should check out AMD APU configurations with A6 or A8.
They make much more balanced configurations.

Acer doesn't make stable laptops the break all the time if i where you i would go for a asus, toshiba (but they dont really have gaming laptops), alienware (expensive) or lenova (dont know much about lenova but heard its pretty good).

I use an asus myself and its great

Most laptops are good for indie games and facebook games. This one may handle some of them, but I wouldn't expect it to run more than some graphicless textadventures as you don't have a graphic card and the cpu is very weak. The reason this thing is so expensive is probably due to the touchscreen, which you really do not want either.

I hate to say it but have you thought of going AMD? Unless you need the touchscreen (said you don't) and the battery life.
Also, that site is reallly overpriced X.x
Edit: Something like this Intel i5 or preferably AMD A6 but maybe a pinch better (A8 or A10), wow everything is so marked up in Ozland OO.

My two cents:

I got my ASUS around three years ago, it had minor problems initially - I found that their service really sucks in my home country. Then I went to Australia and the adapter broke; however I found that their service in Melbourne was really awesome (they replaced it, no questions asked). It's still going strong today, despite having a much lesser price tag compared to laptops of similar specs (especially those damn overpriced Sony and Toshiba ones). So yeah, ASUS is a pretty good brand with good Aussie service; YMMV though.

I agree that you should avoid the touchscreen ones and instead look for better GPUs. As for games, I'd say it would play most indies (I had a Dell that had Intel HD graphics before my current laptop). It shouldn't matter anyway since you've got a dedicated PC, right?

...also if you're tech savvy (I'm not), consider buying second from sites like Gumtree? You'll get much more bang for your buck that way; you really have to be able to check out the thing though.

I got the Acer Asphire Timeline X 3830tg with almost the same specs only with an i5. Problem with asphire laptops is that they overheat pretty fast so you should always check it, if possible in a store before you buy it
