Still better than FB buying Twitch ...

It's no joke. Shacknews has the story too.

So now we should expect to see in our streams? How long before the more popular ones get asked to pay money for the "service"?

I don't think Google will want people to pay them for being allowed to stream. Everyone would just switch to Azubu or something. Twitch earned money from advertisements and subscriptions and so will Google. It would be counterproductive for them to change anything.

Change is all they do, look at what youtube has become... anything can be censored due to copyright issues, with twitch it's different.

Yes, Twitch turned into an alternative to YouTube. Google, instead of fixing issues with YouTube, looks to be buying out its competition.

Damn, I bet a ton of streamers, if not all, who are partnered are going to be left without pay, and I know half of them live off it.

The vod-s are going to be cut and muted due to copyright issues...

That won't stop us to use Twitch, but if Youtube (with their bots) is taking control of Twitch, we can say RIP in peace to the VOD if the streamers have used some music other than the ones included in the games.

I see you don't use Twitch and if you do, then you don't read the chat. It's like 75% of Twitch's population are kids around 10 years old.

I admit I don't use it often.
Maybe once in a while, when one of my favorite MP games has a small tourney going on, where we know each other and people usually behave. By small I mean ~100 people.

good thing one can use both services w/o looking at the comment section / chat.

If I use one of them, I do it for the content, because you're right: comments / chat are overrun by idiots.

Considering the fact that they got competitors in pretty much every aspect of their businesses, they can hardly be called a monopoly. They do cover a much broader spectrum than most companies though.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Good. I can pay them with Monopoly money.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A monopoly would be if they controlled all of the options of one aspect. So they would be a monopoly if they bought out every website that hosts videos, or every search engine, but right now they're just spread across a lot of digital markets.

Monopolization laws in the US? Ha, we live on monopolization.. It sucks. :\ But usually it's that sneaky monopolization, where some giant corporation owns all the small competitive ones through shell companies.

This isn't what classifies as monopoly as everyone already mentioned, but I wish to point out that it wouldn't matter since the US hasn't enforced such laws in awhile, but when they do, they can be paid off to "forgive" by them donating money to various competitors as "investments." It isn't a bad thing though, Apple benefited greatly from it, so did the legal system's highest I bet as well :p

7 digits is nothing when considering billions. And I would say that twitch is quite the competitor against YouTube; wouldn't you think?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes it's nothing, short billion 10 digits, million 7 digits. That is 1000 to 10000 fold difference and not even talking about small numbers.

Variety is just fishing for traffic.. They have nothing to base this story on, no facts, no confirmation, nothing. Someone savvy enough could probably find out how much traffic their site has been getting lately and could confirm either way.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I guess Shacknews, The Associated Press, Reuters, USA Today, and dozens of other sites are "just fishing for traffic" too since they all are reporting the same thing - long before you made your comments.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They reported on it after Variety did. It's how fishing works, and the other news outlets have taken the hook, line and sinker. They all (other than Reuters) link to Variety's report on it, or mention Variety reporting on it. Who, again, was the first to state this "news." People typically click source links on news articles online to see the original, thus creating web traffic for the source website.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'm worried about what others mentioned (eg. copyright issues, muting etc.), but on the other hand, we could get smoother streams if a giant company like Google takes over it, and that I have no other issues with Google.
