Beware that army life is not really what most people imagine it. I have a friend who used to be an officer, so I have some insight into it. There's a lot of paper pushing.

Most of us don't actually get the job we want though

I did get the job I wanted. But I've also had some jobs that I did not want in between.

I'm still in the in-between section. Still wishing I was back in university.

I guess I was lucky enough to be interested in a field that there actually was a demand for (even though it kinda crashed a few years back). I'm a chemical engineer, and with that engineer title comes a far better selection of jobs. Without it I guess I would still be a janitor (not a bad job actually, despite what some might think, but if I were to go back to something similar, I would try to avoid having a position that forced me to enter peoples homes. Most were nice, but there were some very, how shall I put it, disturbing people that I had to deal with). Had I stuck with studying history (which I did for a while) I don't think I would have been so lucky.

My degree was in MANAGEMENT. I have plenty of experience. Job market here just wants even MORE experience.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ah, the old catch 22 of "you need experience to get a job and you need a job to get experience". Been there :( Sometimes they seem to have absolutely silly demands in regards to experience, so much so that it feels like they would rather go without someone than having someone who has not spent half its life working with it (and sometimes they have downright impossible ones, like demanding that you have spent more time working with something than that thing has existed, spotted a few of those in regards to high-tech jobs).

Experience, hehehe. I heard a story about someone being asked in 2011 if he had 10 years of Android developer experience. Android was released in 2008 autumn (and previews were available since November, 2007).

When I wrote what I did above, I was thinking of a similar thing, where they asked for "at least 7 years of HTML 5 experience". They asked for this in early 2013, before HTML 5 had even been officially released, and the first draft for HTML 5 had been released just 5 years prior.

butts in Everyone always says that but I personally never felt this. I've been out of school for 7 years, I always hated it and I'm glad I never have to go back. :) Even though I've had jobs I didn't enjoy.

what if i told you, school is more fun than adult life?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So what? School might be hard but try to see the fun part in it. It's a place where You can socialize with other people and get away from Your PC. And yes, most of the stuff You study is just unnecessary bullshit but that bullshit is used to train Your brain. Without that bullshit You would be like a caveman, trying to chase a goat. Just go through it and You'll see that it's actually good for You. But heh, who am I to say something? I'm just a 15 year old guy who hasn't even finished the school yet.

Actually, I've found most of the subjects that I had in elementary & high school to be quite useful. They did not feel useful back then, but now as an adult I'm glad that I had to learn about a wide selection of topics.

That said, I'm also a bit upset with all the things I learnt in school that turned out to be false. Does no-one fact check the books they use?! No, people did not believe that the earth was flat during the middle ages, no vikings did not drink meed instead of beer (they drank both, and meed was for special occasions, as it was expensive, they also drank wine if they could), no Bohr's atomic model is not correct... I could go on (in particular about all the wrong things I learnt about history).

I'm from Bulgaria but really it was pretty much only my school that was like that since it was a technical one where once you finish you end up with some "professional degree" as electrical technician, computer technician or auto mechanic (pretty much no girls want that and my town was a rather small one the school had around 300-400 students in total)

oh now I understand, here in Argentina we also have that kind of schools, well, at least you have a degree which can be used to get some money in some difficult moments, right?

Permalink

yep something like that, it's pretty much just a certificate that I can do this type of job and it also includes a few months of internships in different companies so it helps a little when getting a entry point job in the same field if you don't continue in a university or something.

I would do anything to go back to my high school days of doing nothing yet having something to do every day... Days in which I'm at the university are way too hard... days which I'm supposed to be free I study for my degree... compared to this high school was a breeze (well to be honest I never found high school hard or boring I had fun going there since I was together with all my best friends and I passed it with the highest marks in nearly everything (thanks PE I just really hated playing football/volleyball and got low marks for not playing))

school is the second best time ever .. u just realize this when you are older and have a job or whatever. kindergarten rulez ^^ these times will come back to you if u have a job because many men and women will behave like little kiddies ... and they are responsible for your job .. or millions of dollars .... so enjoy the time you can see your friends in school .. or in the afternoon. i am happy when i can manage to meet some of my friends one time in 3 months.
in school i felt like you do ... its always too long, too boring or too hard. and it is. useless to say the things i said ;-) just enjoy as much as you can and it will be fine.
i wish you luck for your future plans btw
