It's nice to receive something where you know someone put thought behind it instead of just gving some money because they can't be bothered to make any effort. Why? Money goes in one hand and goes out the other. A present is something that generally lasts a long time. Except cinema tickets etc, but then you have the memories to keep.
If you don't believe in "gift giving nonsense" then don't accept money either.
