I just read an article that it's -88 degrees F in Russia with an image of a girl that is just so fascinating to look at.
Here she is. I honestly have never seen this before.

Why is this just fascinating to stare at?

And does anyone else have images that just fascinate them to the fact they can't stop looking at it?

you "just" need to subtract 32, then multiply by 5, then divide by 9 ;-)

it's actually -31-ish ºC not -66.6. that would be crazy cold!

[edit] -31ºC is already crazy cold but you know what I mean...

That's what google said, I just copy-pasted it. To me (as most people) fahrenheit sounds like alien speak.

How are you getting -31ºC? Cause -88 ºF is not -31 ºC

I can tell you how. He checked how many °C +88°F is and thought that it would be the same for -88°F, just with a -. Which obviously is wrong, because Celsius and Fahrenheit don't use the same 0° base.

Or summed up:
88°F = 31,1111°C
-88°F = -66,6667°C

Cheap eyelashes extensions.
Furthermore it explains why we still have + degrees here. The Russians keep the winter for themselves. :o

It's been rather consistently -25C to -30C where I live for the past two months. Today had problems when my garage door froze to the ground and couldn't get the car out, ugh. I don't envy the Russians.

"View of Earth from the highest ever orbital distance flown by humans"
Few things put me in more awe than this pic. Imagine in a thousand years, us looking down on an alien planet from this same distance; with the whole planet yet to be explored... And then I also wonder what the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs would have looked like from this position.

Quite a few of the stuff on Cracked's Images You Won't Believe Aren't Photoshopped "articles" could probably get a stare out of most people. Plus they have somewhat funny descriptions to go along with them.

Something that fascinates me is this hair color. My mind can't decide if it's red or blonde, so I end up mesmerized, staring at it in wonder until the police haul me away.

It is not red, nor is it auburn. It is called "strawberry blonde" and is a distinct color between red and blonde.

  1. You are correct. It is a different image. The one I first used was not as good an example of the color I was specifying. This second image is a better example (although the first was still strawberry blonde and not red).
  2. I know perfectly well which color it is that I am trying to describe. It is up to me to convey it to others in a comprehensible manner.
  3. I did not ask anyone to name the color depicted. I already know the name of the color. I merely described my fascination with it and my understanding of why my brain finds it interesting. I apologize if I didn't make that clear.

I'm not sure if you're being serious, here, but that's a stereotype, not an absolute truth. As I have no difficulty distinguishing between those colors, I assume other men can also tell the difference. Sachys, however, seems to be having difficulty, so there may be some truth to the stereotype.

i am joking :)
anyway i can say that in my circle of people women can definitely distinguish more tones than men, and we laugh at how the stereotype works perfectly with us

I remember reading a study once that said it has little to do with being able to distinguish the different tones, most men can do that part, the issue comes when it's time to describe it. Statistically women tend to remember more colors' names than men, so while men's minds just lump together many tones under one name women will use more names to describe them. Also women are more likely to add adjectives to colors to describe them better while men wont go farther than using "dark" or "light".
In the end all of it comes down to linguistic stuff and how language alters our perception of the world.

I saw the original post and I don't think it was that low. From what I recall it was -50C. That's for the picture, I mean.

The temperatures themselves got down to -66C though.
