How do I create a popular thread?

I've seen many types of threads, some get ignored and forgotten, others are popular and are constantly bumped. How to I make a popular thread that stays on the first page for a really long time?

Be provocative, encourage people to participate on it, reply to the answers you get. As a last resort get in a fight with somebody. That's pretty much how the internet works.

Also free things to people who comment and that is a good option.
