A couple of quick questions regarding Steam Machines:

1) Release date?

2) SteamOS only runs Linux compatible games, does this mean the Steam Machine will not be able to run, say, COD MW3? Since it's not compatible on Linux.

3) Why are people actually hyped up about this? Just buy a laptop and connect to TV, play using Big Picture

1)Not sure but i dont think any release date confirmed by valve......

2)they said that you can stream your windows games on Steam machines ...

3)A laptop cant match performance at price of an steam machine but i believe a self built pc can...But it may become a little bit cheaper to buy X steam machine instead of building your rig yourself....

+

people will buy a ready to use console like device...many would buy it just because of this easy to use feature ...just plug and play.......(anyway i Will not buy this thing(s))

Streaming Games means you still need a PC to stream the Games... I tried myself an older Notebook thats around 250€ as Stream-Client and that works. So just for a streaming-client even the cheapest stream-machine is to expensive.

I got a $700 laptop that runs just about all of my games just fine. I connect it to my TV when my wife's out.

"3) Why are people actually hyped up about this?"

Because people thought they were making 1) A console or 2) Great gaming PC at low costs.
Some people still think these things which is sad.

This might be useful for you.

1) Release date?

Valve Time

2) SteamOS only runs Linux compatible games, does this mean the Steam Machine will not be able to run, say, COD MW3?

Linux is 'superior' to Windows. You can always use Wine or such software on Linux to play Windows games. But don't blame Steam for making this (correct) choice, blame the developers from Call of Duty MW3 that they don't support linux. And I heard something about home streaming, this might also be a solution.

3) Why are people actually hyped up about this? Just buy a laptop and connect to TV, play using Big Picture

Steam does not force you to use a Steam Machine, the OS is free (and open source) and can be placed on every computer. A console such as a Playstation is also a regular 'computer', but the OS is restricted to Playstation only.
As far as I know you can always install Windows or any other OS on a 'Steam Machine'.

It's a computer (/console) that gives you freedom instead of restrictions. And of course allows you to play all your favourite games from Steam (it can't natively play Windows games though) from your couch.

Maybe in the future I will buy a mini-ITX system for a 'Steam Machine'.

You sound very optimistic about the Linux issue and personally I wish you were right. But I don't think people will spend hundreds of dollars/euros/etc to buy a Steam Machine, just to use it as a Linux PC and as a streaming receiver for their (also expensive) Windows gaming PC. Unless Linux support becomes standard and a significant portion of Steam's catalogue gets ported, Steam Machines only make sense as very cheap streaming devices, like those Android thingies people use to watch movies and Youtube clips on their non-smart TVs.

Linux becommes pretty big because of Valve and Steam. For example Unreal Engine 4 supports Linux and as you may know, most developers used Unreal Engine 3 so they will probably use UE4, too.

Sure, I know. My main concern is the back catalogue and I can't see that massive effort happening or who would make it happen. The best chance is probably Valve working with PlayOnLinux and people being ok with Wine "ports".

wine ports or wraps is worst thing to happen for game. that's not a support, that's garbage. Oniken proved that there's no worst thing than that kind of "Linux support" :D

Well, yes and no. These days I'm stuck with an oldish, low-spec Linux machine for gaming and since I installed Steam through PlayOnLinux (which is Wine with tweaks), I'm able to play many games that don't have (and probably never will) a Linux version, and even one - Full Bore - that crashes at startup on native Linux but works perfectly with Wine. :)

I'm not saying Wine is an optimal solution, far from it. All I'm saying is that I feel it's the best chance for Steam Machines to be widely accepted.

Everything big starts little. Valve gave Linux (for gaming) a small push.

Though a mini-ITX computer isn't that expensive and can always be used for other instances.

Wine Sucks....... you need an expensive pc to run watch dogs on windows????

well you need a more expensive one to run it (maybe) under linux.....

im not a fan of windows or microsoft + i really like linux >>>but this is what it is.....

im not sure but think i heard somewhere valve said that they developed a new API for SteamOS which results a performance boost to windows...but even this thing have along way to go.....

+

consoles are Not a regular pc ....they are alot diffrent on hardware also...(take ps3 for example)....

if ps4 has a x-86 architecture it doesnt mean that its a regular PC.....

You can always use Wine or such software on Linux to play Windows games.

It's a struggle to get games working with wine, especially when they use Microsoft XNA or other frameworks. Also, you have to install the Windows version of Steam and run Steam through Wine, too. Furthermore you have a huge pferformance loss using Wine. Wine is NOT right-clicking an executable and then everything's fine. Still Wine is an awesome tool, but it's for emergencies and not a solution.

I know this, but Atlanteanrs didn't know there was a possibility to play Windows games.

that's what PlayOnLinux is for ;)
it's still a wine but it's way better optimized in it.
CoD MW3 runs great on wine, CoD MW2 and MW does it as well ;)

"Blame" developers for not frivolously wasting money on OS with 1% market share which would never even return expenses, much less profit, and run far worse than Windows version? Okaaay.

I remember when we had "choice" in OS 15 years ago and these were horrible times, nothing was properly tested or running smoothly due to market fragmentation and runaway expenses.

Steam Machines combine literally worst traits of console and PC. Just get some barebone machine + Win 8 for 2/3 price and you will be set.

Linux superior to Windows? Please, only if you are fanboy or need to run heavy duty WWW server. For games? Never, hilariously enough not even all Valve games are running on it.

Eh, I just saw chart of games running natively on Linux some times ago and it's parodied version where someone pasted screen-shots of various Steam store pages of Valve games with "Windows only" or "Mac + Win" and a subtitle "Linux support, Valve? Really?". As far as I know, that didn't changed yet.

biggest problem so far is games that doesn't support directx lower than 11

Ah. Still, between having Win + Linux + WINE, and just Win with more free space, I really don't see the utility in overcomplicating matters. I used to work with Linux, now I just have Live CD in case I need something that really won't work on Windows. YMMV, though.

Yes, but not much. Installation was fine, after downloading a Update the Machine boots up with a black screen. Tried several solutions, but it did not worked and I need the PC for different stuff. (The PC works with Ubuntu and Windows 8 with no problems)

more detail: after the online update the machine boots up with steam-logo and after that the screen goes black

i think, but the problem is nothing in the first boot up or dischandling. I think it´s something with the gfx-device-drivers in the update. Cause steam-OS installation worked, but after the online-update and reboot it did not.

1) no idea
2) yep, can't run it
3) I have no idea, they're more overpriced than consoles, it's just a gaming pc with linux preinstalled. Honestly just building a new computer then installing linux on it would work better.

Steam machines are PC so you can install Windows if you desire, so technically you can run COD MW3.

People is hyped because it is Valve and it is intriguing. A laptop is most of the time very inferior to a desktop cost effective. There is the model from Cyberpower i think which would be 500 US and is at least as good in specs as new gen consoles if not better so some of them are not actually bad. People need to understand that at least the first batches of Stam machines are not marketed to PC gamers who know how to build a PC.

Pretty much this

I am in the school of thought that my PC is already a "Steam Machine". I don't really need a console governed by a DRM system.
Just my opinion.

if steam OS only run linux stuff then Its just one addition of linux like all the others.. I thought they were going to make an entire new OS not extend Linux.. for that I can just install one of the 970842304748389 already existing linux versions..

For now Steam Machine is useless imo, I can do the same by dual booting my gaming PC instead of buying an overpriced Steam Machine, if Steam Machines cost less than buying all components it includes this would be good, but this is not possible.

  1. From steam: never (they said that the just created prototype for beta), From other OEM: already exists
  2. SteamOS is Unix based so only Linux games or stream
  3. Don't see the hype anymore, since beta started
  4. Only thing I'm waiting for is the controller
