First of all, what's wrong with giving away free games? Everything. If someone wants a key, he can get the one by himself. Even if people get 0 CV for such games, they steal got the credit. They gave the game away. Why would they do that. People are not virtually disabled to not have ability to redeem free games by themselves so there is no single reason why someone would do it for them.

Make giveaway for such game not possible to do or make the warning for this or close to this title games. Whatever. But don't let people giveaway free games. It's fakely make people take the credit.

Ban everyone who can't understand the simple rules. If someone doesn't want to follow them, why caring about such people?

What if someone missed out on the free giveaway?

I am just wondering what hurt it does to leave it the way it is?

What if someone missed the key, cause someone got it to Steamgift to give it away and the keys from original source was all taken? You literally steal someone else's key, to give it to another someone. Don't see the point in doing that.

'Literally' steal?

I don't think that is how you define theft, but maybe that is just me. ^^

Maybe not that showy theft, but still, You take sth, sb else would like to have. But You are giving it to people on SG, that literally enter every giveaway, because of too much points.

You can't steal something that was given to you freely or as an exchange of goods, however. That is the entire premise of 'first come first served'.

If I make 10 pizzas to sell, and sell all of them, the 11th customer can't come in and claim that the 10th guy stole his pizza.

At least that's what I learned in law school. ^^

I dont know about some "free games" are only availbe about special promotion should nobody give Dead By Daylight away because Alienware did give it away for free?
I dont think they get any credit for it ,i mean for sure zenotronocs shit bundle etc are some special cases ,but overall i only see specific free game bans and not all because many people still want some of those games or even missed it .

One doesn't need to win free game to be against free games giveaways.

I don't see how giveaways for free games affect you in any way, some people will miss a good promotion like 'The Darkness 2' and may still want to win or play the game. How does someone giving away here and receiving nothing in return while making someone happy affect you in any way? Your idea is ridiculous and unfounded.

I understand blocking free games while the game is still available free, but what about giving for people that missed the giveaway?
I imagine blocking the games just while they are available free would create additional overhead, with little gain, and you would have the people still holding the keys until after the free period and flooding the site with them then.

As it is they get 0 CV for the games, so what does it matter.

Disabling giving away a game when they are free at this time and for a month after they are gone being free. I think it was how that worked before they changed it.

I'd agree with you if free games stayed free forever. They usually don't, and people that have missed a mass giveaway, well, miss the game.

I mean only in the time when it's free and within the month after. Then it will be enabled again.

Whats it matter to you anyway? the way I see it is the more free/crappy/games i have no interest in there are, other people are spending there points on them so thats less points being spent on games I want.

That's why they have to get the mentioned game at literally same time, but not from original source, but SG?

That was actually a valid argument. An original GA may last for a couple of hours, while SG GAs keep going for days or even weeks.

Some giveaways last for days - which was possible to block in the past. However, many giveaways last only an hour or half a day. It's not productive use of Moderator(/Support?) effort to keep track of ongoing giveaways and block/unblock the games.

Why does it bother you so much? Are you able to see all these free giveaways, cause you don't have a game?

Steamgifts has a lag. Before it make those games not visible to someone, You have to either wait, or press sync. I always forgot about syncing, when adding new key from ga or bundle, and so I see those games anyway.
Why does it bother me? Because it's pointless. Averyone who want the free game, will get it himself. But that way, You have to pay points for those games.

"Averyone who want the free game, will get it himself"

What if the person doesn't know where to find the free game or that the free game is available? I certainly don't know where every free game is. I subscribe to a steam group which messages me when free games are available. I am not always logged into steam though and I would imagine there are plenty of people who are not members of such a group.

I certainly don't think it should be banned but perhaps it would be polite to say in the thread where you got the key from and that it was free. Would you be happy with that?

There are days when I don't have access to internet - and sometimes it's one day, sometimes it's a whole week.
That's how I missed some free games. I'm quite happy to see ga's for them.
It's bothering you?
Press hide button. Or sync your account.
Problem solved.

Yes, they need to pay points to enter giveaway. Usually it's not too much, but still. You can get it for free but You got deceived. It's pointless. Every person who wants that game, will take it for free himself.

It still is more of a reason than you have to offer, as all you have is that you don't like people giving free stuff.

And it is a counterargument to your claim that

People are not virtually disabled to not have ability to redeem free games by themselves so there is no single reason why someone would do it for them.

Besides, there are plenty more examples like that, it isn't just "one in a billion".
Just take a look at last week, when tons of people couldn't get a second stamp for Humble's promotion, missing out on the 2 free games.

Even if it is 0 CV, it is still a step in the spirit of giving, however small. I like the way it is now.

With some exceptions, freely given games are only free for a limited amount of time, a week, 48 hours, a day or only a couple of hours, so unless you keep scurrying all over the web the whole time, it's easy to miss out on such opportunities. These games don't give any CV, so what's the harm ? Just hide them if they bother you so much.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can see two cases in which being able to give away games that have been free is a good thing:

  1. Games that are no longer free (the promotion has ended).
  2. Games that were free at some point for a brief time and then appear in a bundle.

In both of those there's going to be people wanting to give away those games and people wanting to win them.

People get 0 cv for free games so that they can't increase levels with these games. Personally, if I missed a giveaway, being able to win the game on SG is a bonus I would rather have than not have. If you have got the game or are not interested in them, activate or hide the game and you wont see any more giveaways for them. Free keys will get taken regardless even if they cant give it away on SG. There will be some other outlet for the keys to be given away (Indiegala etc)

That is probably why he made this post. He probably enters for every game, not caring what it is, just for the +1 on Steam, and got upset when he realized he is wasting points to enter giveaways that were given away for free. Sounds like a great reason to continue allowing free games to be given away.

People will still make giveaways with free games, but under some other name. For example, when Homefront was given fo free, some users were making GAs with this game, but as Homefront: The Revolution. So just let them make GAs with freebies, they won't get anything for it anyway.

well i missing a lot of those free good game promotion like Walking Dead . so why forbide people who want to share it , it not like it hurt you anything since people wasting their point and the GA creator dont get any cv anyway .
