I've just come up with a simple improvement to SteamCards.
You deduct the card drops from the number of cards in a set, then divide 100% by that value and make it thresholds in achievements progress to get more cards.

Example:

Borderlands 2 cards. 6 cards to complete a set, 3 free drops. 6-3=3. 100%/3=33.33%
Once you reach 33, 66 and 99% of the Steam achievements in that game you get another card.

Yes, probably less money would be pumped in the cards, but gamers would be happier. Imo. Your thoughts?

...nobody but the most hardcore would want to bother past the first few cards. I mean, just look at these achievements.

Hmm, it would be more tempting if the last threshold had, say, a 50% chance of dropping a foil card.

They will lose money. I know people who buys every game that gets cards and buys every missing card from the market. Also there are program(s) that can let you get all the achievements.

Yeah, I'm just happy with level 10 and one showcase. I don't understand why they waste so much money just to display a number in their profile. But meh, it's their money, they can do whatever they want with it.

I only bought some TF2 cards to complete my set and get to lvl 10. This way I can have the chance to drop foils cards for extra profit and I got a showcase too. As you say, I don't see the point in going any further than that.

Sadly you don't even have to be level 10 any more for a chance to drop foil cards. They're also worth considerably less on the market now, too.

What pissed me off is that they removed the restriction on foil cards after most of the people in the beta most likely already used up their card chances.

I agree, if I had known they were going to change their policy I wouldn't have grabbed my Half Life 2, TF2 or CS:GO cards.

As you can see, they are the living proof that on any place it's interesting to add a feature to allow brag for money, there are enough people interested on it to compensate the cost of the feature development.

EDIT: well, new games, probably, but "old" games devs are also adding cards, and a lot of them don't have achivements...

Do I get Trading Cards for completing achievements in game?

Trading Card drops are currently just tied to playtime within a game, independent of which achievements you are getting. We will definitely look into adding more rules for how cards are dropped in the future, but there are a few problems with in-game achievements that prevented us from using them right now. Many games have achievements that are grindy or un-fun to get, and we want the act of getting game cards to be fun for all users in games. We also don't want to push users to cheat or use achievement-unlockers in games in order to get cards, since that devalues achievements and isn't that fun either. Achievements are still valuable, and having the Achievement Showcase on your community profile is a great way to show off those rare achievements.

I like the idea, but Valve has to do something to prevent SAM or similar programs first.

They already said that while they are looking at ways other than idling to get you cards they really didn't want to go the achievement route.

EDIT! Damn copypaster beat me to it. :D

And people will just unlock those achievement drops using SAM. So not really a good idea.

some achievements are managed serverside and cannot be unlocked with SAM. to be fair though, there is no such thing as an unhackable game.

They should implement some kind of always online DRM where achievements unlock and you get trading cards. This way it wouldnt get exploited! Of course they would piss off the whole PC gaming world but hey... more trading cards.

Too late now and that would cause them to be more expensive.

I think part of their appeal is that you can get a badge for under $5 in most cases.

This would promote people to use such devices as the Steam Achievement Manager. Farming cards that way.

It would also be a lot quicker for them since they don't have to wait 20 minutes between each card.
