"Windows 11 is out now. Microsoft's latest operating system is official available to download in something resembling a final release build, and if you fancy taking it for a spin it's a fairly simple process to update to Windows 11 on your gaming PC.

Microsoft dropped its newly-numbered OS close to a day early in some areas of the world, which means you could've spent all night with Windows 11. Lucky you.

New features with Windows 11 include a redesigned Microsoft Store, new look and feel Start Menu and Taskbar, built-in support for Android apps, and its new AutoHDR feature.

That said, we're not quite convinced that Windows 11 is an OS worthy of your gaming PC just yet. It's not that it doesn't look flashy and come with some new features worth talking about, it's just that, despite its official 'release', it still feels an operating system very much in beta.

We also can't believe some of these old Windows menus are still going strong.

Though that said, we've tried the new OS out on some of our own machines in the weeks leading up to launch, and found a few things we like in the new OS, such as its soothing new sounds, the redesigned app window experience, and the new window snap functionality.

Is that worth the price of admission? You can be the judge of that with your own Windows 11 installation from the download page, that is if you don't fancy waiting for Microsoft to update your machine for you sometime next year and your system meets the stringent processor requirements.

The easiest way to install Windows 11 is to follow the steps for Microsoft's Windows 11 Installation Assistant. Failing that, Installation Media should provide a handy alternative for users with a decent USB drive close at hand, though that's proved a little flaky for us so far. An easy ISO download, however, is always the most straightforward option."

At the time, Microsoft said Windows 10 would be the final version, and after that it would be SAAS - they'll just keep adding small updates.
I wish that were true, it'd make life a lot easier, and I don't see Windows 11 having any major upgrades worth the hassle of a complete install

Unfortunately, my laptop came with Win 8 preinstalled and no option to legally downgrade to Win 7, so I still think (I didn't even try the 8), that I've got a better deal upgrading for free to 10, but geez, it's still crap comparing to 7. 2 reinstalls due to updates messing it up and another 2 messed up updates with reinstalls avoided only because I keep illegal 2 instance on another partition. Worst of all - no reliable way to make a reliable backup and restore of the system partition alone even with previously flawless programs, like Paragon, only the full drive (though maybe now it's solved - I didn't research it for the last 2-3 years).

And I dare to say, using practically all of them from 3.1 on, except the 8, that Win 7 was not only "the last good", but definitely the best OS they made.

Surprisingly though, I've had a very good experience with generally disliked Win 2000, which alongside XP I would grade as a 2nd best.

I have another PC with Windows 10, but I generally avoid using it.
Looking forward to checking out the Steam Deck since it'll be the first time I've tried gaming under linux before, and if it's good enough I might just switch to Linux as my main OS in the future (once nothing supports Windows 7 anymore).

I feel bad for the people who cling to 7. No more support from Microsoft means you're missing out on a lot of features, and also eventually more vulnerable to viruses.

There's nothing wrong with 10, people just avoid the discomfort of learning new interfaces.

Old OSes decay and stop working eventually. You had like 6+ years to upgrade from 7 to 10 for free, I don't think you can do that anymore either. So now if something doesn't work you get to pay to upgrade too.

And OSes using more and more system resources for "features" that a lot of users didn't ask for, aren't interested in, and don't use. Especially folks who for whatever reason are stuck on older machines and can't afford to upgrade often.

Consumers have been conditioned to believe that newer is automatically better, when a lot of times newer just means that a big company just wants to sell you the same crap you already bought again in a shiny new package.

Yeah, people often talk about what "new features" will people miss because they're on older systems but, really, what exactly are those "new features" that people should care about?

Inb4 someone mentions "security" just like that, without actually mentioning a feature. Just like consoles add "stability" on every other update.

I am staying on 7 for now with my 9 year old 3570K and then when I build a new computer later this year or sometime next year, I am probably going to try switching to Linux with Proton since I will not be able to run 7 on the newer hardware. I really don't want anything to do with Windows 10 or 11. I would prefer to keep 7 if I can get it working on a new computer, but that will be a difficult process if it works at all.

If Windows 7 won't work on new hardware, I would have to choose between Windows 10/11 or Linux. I think a lot of gamers are forced to stay on Windows because of game compatibility. I figured Linux might be the better choice now that Proton can get almost all games to work. Maybe more and more people will now switch to Linux and it will become a better, easier to use, more compatible operating system over time as people ditch Windows. I hope that is what happens in the future.

If Proton works satisfactorily for me, then I will definitely switch to Linux with my next computer. Actually Win 7 was the only Windows, which was so user friendly for me, that out of laziness I would choose it over Linux, if not for the software compatibility problems. So, yes, a new comp for sure will run for a while on Linux and stay with it, if I don't run into problems.

Sadly, I do expect Microsoft to go to lengths to derail the Proton project. I'm convinces, that they are already working on some solutions, like possibly a new version of DirectX, for which their main focus is to make sure, that they could not be emulated outside of Windows. Who knows, made the whole development of Win 11 after claiming, that Win 10 is the last Windows, is just an excuse to build such mechanics into the OS foundation and use them, once it has enough users to stay dominant on market.

Dexter was fun and okay when it was new, it just got old halfway as how believeable can anyone stay as a serial killer out of the cops their hands? Not even if you work for forensics, you slip up, and then the few who got on his tail, he killed.
And you seen 1 or a few killings and really you seen them all, in the end you don't get any sympathy anymore for Dexter.

I believe the same cycle repeats, it's new and fun again in the beginning and then it revolves in the same thing (but so do many shows).

You hit it on the head. If I'm not mistaken, the showrunner and the writers changed after season 4 (maybe not immediately after) and they were never able to recapture the magic. The fact that they're doing this after several years gives me more hope. Wait for a good idea (hopefully) instead of it being a yearly obligation.

Season 4 had John Lithgow as the trinity killer, he is an unique and masterful actor that almost made the whole season and the most memorable, yeah i think after it declined.

Apparently he might come back to make a guest/ghost appeareance in the new serie.
In the first series Dexter had a wife and young kid, his wife was killed by the trinity killer and that kid seemingly has grown up now so he got not much to lose this time.
We'll see, think it's coming soon enough, same as the Chucky (Child's Play) serie.

Yeah, I recall seeing that Lithgow would have at least a cameo.

I really hope that they keep him without a family for this. There's no reason for Harrison to come back, and Rita's kids pretty much disappeared in the last couple seasons, iirc.

I think it'll be more enjoyable if he's not saddled with people that only serve to be an annoyance.

That's hard to answer. I listened to 4 or 5 of them while jogging (I prefer audiobooks over music, which seems weird to a lot of people :-D ). The drawback is that I don't retain it as much as I would if I were reading it in bed. Also, it's been ~10 years since I last listened to one.

I remember very basic plot points, but nothing really sticks with me aside from in the second book, I think, Doakes gets kidnapped by the big bad from that book and gets massively tortured: hands and feet amputated, tongue cut out, and eyelids cut off...and he survives it and shows up briefly a couple other times, but is not longer a cop. Obviously.

So the real answer to your question...I don't recall there being an overarching plot between the books, they were more self-contained, but I definitely think they were fun. Relatively short and pretty easy to digest. Better show? Not through Lithgow's season, but after? Probably. Same Dexter, though. More or less.

Just dropping by to mention that in Linux you can choose the system fonts, cursors, icon style, taskbar location, whether taskbar even present, window borders, even the style of the mini/maxi/close buttons, meanwhile Windows keeps thinking they know best at everything and keeps taking away options or adding bullshit like candy crush ads right in your start menu.

"Layout changes aside, the overall experience of using the taskbar isn't dramatically different than it was before, but it does include a handful of weird removals and feature regressions. While the buttons can be left-aligned to recreate the old default look of the taskbar, the taskbar itself can no longer be docked to the top or sides of the screen. Files can't be dragged down to a taskbar icon to be opened by the app you select. You can no longer ungroup taskbar icons and now need to rely on hovering over each taskbar icon to differentiate between multiple open windows in the same app. The taskbar also no longer offers to show the time, date, and system tray icons on all monitors in a multi-monitor setup, even when running a full-screen app like a game or video player on the primary monitor." Windows 11: The Ars Technica review: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/10/windows-11-the-ars-technica-review/5/#h1

That's actually a total deal breaker for me. For at least 20 years, since switching to Windows 2000, I've been using only a slightly modified auto-hiding taskbar on a right side of my screen. Sure, there will shortly be some independent programs, that will address the issue, but even with them I could never be sure, that a new update will not break them. So, until they do a u-turn on this Win 11 is a no-no for me.

It seems that a few bugs have been discovered at this point.
Recommend that you wait at least three months to see what happens.🐛🐜🐝🔍
And it also has a reputation for poor gaming performance.
You may want to wait until Nvidia or AMD rations graphics drivers that will stabilize them.
You'll still have to wait for three months.

Seriously, these are the only things I keep hearing about W11 (aside from the ridiculous system requirements), both from the reviews and from official MS announcements. With all of the coverage being about cosmetic changes, I seriously worry about what sort of horrible functional changes they are trying to distract us from. what is TPM?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What Is a TPM?

At its most basic, the TPM is a tiny chip on your computer’s motherboard, sometimes separate from the main CPU and memory. The chip is akin to the keypad you use to disable your home security alarm every time you walk in the door, or the authenticator app you use on your phone to log in to your bank account. In this scenario, turning on your computer is analogous to opening the front door of your home or entering your username and password into the login page. If you don’t key in a code within a short period of time, alarms will sound or you won’t be able to access your money.

Likewise, after you press the power button on a newer PC that uses full-disk encryption and a TPM, the tiny chip will supply a unique code called a cryptographic key. If everything is normal, the drive encryption is unlocked and your computer starts up. If there’s a problem with the key—perhaps a hacker stole your laptop and tried to tamper with the encrypted drive inside—your PC won’t boot up.

My motherboard didn't come with a TPM module installed, so no Windows 11 for me. Not that I am in any hurry to upgrade. It will be a year or two, at least, before the bugs are worked out, developers have a feel for supporting it, and all of the awful bloat and telemetry that MS will invariably try to hide in there is uncovered. My rig should be good for another 3-4 years without any major upgrades, so I'm not going to worry about changing my OS until it's time for a new PC.

I forgot all about those nag screens. I must have blocked them out of my memory. Seems likely that they will do it again, especially considering the recent nag screens I saw in W10 that kept trying to get me to sign in to a MS account and force me to synch my devices.

I would not trust them to not force upgrade at some point without me having a choice in the matter. How many win7/8 systems got upgraded without people approving? A lot.

I think it's called VBS. Not Visual Basic but something Virtualization-Based Security. Basically sandboxing apps inside windows RAM using CPU virtualization technology. That is a good thing in general, but may slow down games if applied to them. Also you should be able to turn it off.
