"Windows 11 is out now. Microsoft's latest operating system is official available to download in something resembling a final release build, and if you fancy taking it for a spin it's a fairly simple process to update to Windows 11 on your gaming PC.

Microsoft dropped its newly-numbered OS close to a day early in some areas of the world, which means you could've spent all night with Windows 11. Lucky you.

New features with Windows 11 include a redesigned Microsoft Store, new look and feel Start Menu and Taskbar, built-in support for Android apps, and its new AutoHDR feature.

That said, we're not quite convinced that Windows 11 is an OS worthy of your gaming PC just yet. It's not that it doesn't look flashy and come with some new features worth talking about, it's just that, despite its official 'release', it still feels an operating system very much in beta.

We also can't believe some of these old Windows menus are still going strong.

Though that said, we've tried the new OS out on some of our own machines in the weeks leading up to launch, and found a few things we like in the new OS, such as its soothing new sounds, the redesigned app window experience, and the new window snap functionality.

Is that worth the price of admission? You can be the judge of that with your own Windows 11 installation from the download page, that is if you don't fancy waiting for Microsoft to update your machine for you sometime next year and your system meets the stringent processor requirements.

The easiest way to install Windows 11 is to follow the steps for Microsoft's Windows 11 Installation Assistant. Failing that, Installation Media should provide a handy alternative for users with a decent USB drive close at hand, though that's proved a little flaky for us so far. An easy ISO download, however, is always the most straightforward option."

[EDIT1] You can rollback and testdrive Windows 11 for 10 days and if you don't like it, totally revert back to Windows 10 while keeping your files and everything.
[EDIT2] On a sidenote, I do wonder if they gonna hit us with the nag update screen like they did with Windows 10.

I was using Windows 10 almost year before release (Windows Insider) because i like new stuff, but Windows 11 was on my PC just about 1 hour and i was forced to go back. Dont care about desing, but few things and settings were missing, so in some way it is downgrade. So i will stay some time with Windows 10, but i like that they did something with CPU scheduler, because sometimes in Windows 10 it is trash.
But in some way, Windows 11 is not that brand new, just improved Windows 10 (focused on BFU).

I'll upgrade sometime but will wait for bugs to pop up and get worked out. I haven't really read up on anything for it either so that will be something I do first too.

How would I prevent win11 from auto installing through windows update? Do I need to be worried about that happening?

You have to give permission, but i wonder if it keeps giving that nag screen like they did with the windows 10 upgrade back then.

Just go to the bios and disable your motherboard's TPM so it won't install itself.

Warning: Only do this if you don't use features like bitlocker, Windows Hello...

I haven't noticed any important difference. It feels like it is a PR -trick to force people to enable security features. And the UX is improved.
All applications I had installed in Win10 are still installed and working after upgrade. It's basically Win10 with security features enabled.

If you're installing a fresh copy of Windows 11 you can use your Windows 10 key to activate. Possibly even your Windows 7 key too.

Since the Windows 11 thing, I've started using TaskBarX and TranslucentTB to get accustomed to the new upcoming Windows.

What worries me is that some games will not work with the new operating system, especially old ones.

I will be waiting for a stable version of Windows 11 to come. So I'm not going to rush upgrading.

the whole thing is that Windows 11 is a glorified theme pack for Windows 10

Windows 11 won't run on many current Windows machines, only 64-bit machines will be supported, and only machines with a TPM chip will run Windows 11.

That's good news because there are roughly 1.3 billion Windows 10 devices out there, especially for those abandoned by Windows 11's restrictive update policy, will end in October 2025.

I'm willing to wait by then. I mean, it doesn't look like it's a massive overhaul between the two so, I am not interested in throwing away a workable OS for a new and fresh one.

This reminds me a lot of The Sims series, every time a new sequel showed up, it would be significantly weaker than the predecessor because it would not contain any DLC's and content that would make the experience right. It's nice to try, but not fully jump on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8rmHjY_-1E Top Windows 11 new features

Lugum put an interesting video, and I'm repeating myself, but...

0:13 New Start menu experience
1:49 Windows snapping
2:34 Snap Groups
3:17 Settings updates
5:53 Multiple Desktops / Workspaces (right click to rename, add background)
7:24 Widgets
8:10 New Windows keyboard shortcuts
9:08 Teams for Windows 11
11:11 WiFi widget, that menu, Accessiblity tools, etc. WINDOWS A
12:29 Focus Assist (this is simply no notifications. They could have made a simple update in settings, not a new OS)
14:10 Dictation improvements

I seriously don't see any reasons to improve. Like, none. I don't care about widgets, shortcuts, snaps, or multiple desktops (at least this one may be useful for some people). I haven't heard any improvements for a normal gaming user. Nada. Cero. I am definitely sticking to 10 and I'll wait to see 12, or whatever name they choose next.

the key feature you're missing, because it's under the hood, is virtualization-based security.
That's a major change and will (if implemented correctly), be a major thing in cyber-security for years to come.

For the average user, it's completely meaningless.

Also apparently some Xbox technology to make SSD faster.

Just remember, every other version of Windows sucks!
BAD: Windows 1&2 did anyone actually pay attention to the first two iterations?
GOOD: Windows 3 although, NT3 was bad. If someone wants to claim that Windows 2 was good and NT3 was bad, fine
BAD: Windows 95 / NT4
GOOD: Windows 98 it was praised for addressing all the issues of Win95
BAD: Windows ME / Windows 2000
GOOD: XP
BAD: Vista
GOOD: 7 someone help me out. I can understand 95 & 98 being essentially the same thing, but, did they just choose to forget about ME?
BAD: 8
GOOD: 10 Microsoft can't count. Maybe that's what was wrong with the Pentium
???: 11

Agreed, ME was total crap. But Win2K was great, it just wasn't targeted for home/consumer use. I used Win2K for quite a while, at least a year or so after XP was released. I hated XP's look when it first arrived.

Well its different in so many ways.
-i can see what people are thinking in their own tests on foruns and videos
-not microsoft. they have a history vs the small guy i have no beef with
-i can support indies
-some of my favorite games of all time (like subnautica, dead cells and hades) were EA
--i never shared that same love and passion with ANY windows version.
nostalgia at most, but when i stop to remenber i was frustrated, formating etc on all of then
-with many EA titles i had 100+ hours of fun before full release, even with bugs
heck in some i had more fun that way, having fun with features and broken balance that were changed, different versions
in an os the 'playtests' is just insecurity, instability...
-no ea games run the risk of deleting my data
-no ea games (i know of) spy on me or sell my data
-no ea games force me to restart and update the os in hours i dont want to
-none required me tpm
-one thing is Fun, the other is...?
-the feedback i gave on some EA games was listened and implemented
microsoft never listens even their bigger costumer base- wich btw arent me or you but big companies paying for mass use

the list could go on and on

idk, I kinda always have some fun with a new windows. both on PC and mobile it was always something exciting, checking new settings, feeling the difference. with windows 11 that lasted like 2 hours but still.

my main point is that they say they won't "beta test" this free thing yet they pay for an incomplete game. also the system is pretty solid, I mean, this does feels like a final product, not a beta, maybe cause they didn't change almost nothing.

But im worried... i already had a hard time trying to turn off most telemetry and resource hungry background windows bs- i had done a lot to make it work and years later discovered there was a bunch more being done under the hood.
Thats windows 10.
But looking indepth looks at windows 11 everything points to microsoft going even deeper with all of that.
i yet have to view proper gaming reviews after launch and maybe some updates, but beta analysis saw very few games with minor improvements and a larger number with worse performance, probably because they werent made with the virtualization whatever of windows 11 in mind... so even for gaming im still not sold.

Windows 10 had bad gaming performance on launch, and some other nonsense that got better.

The thing with os is that be it gaming or work its so central to everything else thats the one part where i dont want to take risks. Heck not 1 year ago or so a windows update resulted in lost data for some users, thats like one of the few worse things a system could do. As time passed we managed (collectively) to tame the beast, changing windows settings and preventing automatic updates- but microsoft already gave numerous hints that with 11 they want everyone updating, and free upgrades/personal editions always pinging to microsoft over the internet. Wait what?

Just as an example, both my phone and the news widget refused to not open in the background and not update no matter what i tried. Unlike other apps wich i can only update via the store app, apparently they get updates pushed inside system updates regardless.
I blocked both from pinging to microsoft everytime i log on (btw i never even opened my phone, never used it, still it opens on launch, pings microsoft and refuses to not be in the background)...
...and every 2-3 weeks it manages to change something so i have to block it again- borderline malware behaviour.

Both my phone and the news widget were the latest additions to windows 10, already part of the work/path ms was experimenting for windows 11. If anything theyre closer to how ms will act and 11 behave, at least on launch, then how 10 was on launch.

Since they consider my PC from late 2017 "too old", I will happily stay on 10. The only real reason they had to call this Windows 11 instead of just having it be a Windows 10 feature update was because Apple finally went to macOS 11 and Microsoft went "well, now we have to go to 11 too or we'll lose."
