I hear bike riding is healthy, fun, and free of the feeling of wanting to kill yourself to end the pain afterward.

i was actually thinking of getting a bike (i don't like stationary ones in gyms :D )
maybe i'll save up for one...

With a good road bike, you can go long distances (and take in the sights to not get bored) without feeling like you've put in too much effort. I have no idea what sort of budget you have, but regardless it's probably best to get a secondhand bike first to see if you like it before investing in a quality one. Personally, I'm a carbon-fiber fan because I like the "riding on air" feel of having a bike under 20lbs.

I knew I liked you. I was a "serious" cyclist for about 12 years, worked as a messenger in NYC and Milwaukee, and have been a bike mechanic off and on for about the same number of years. My knees just wore out (fixed gear+no brakes will do that) and due to lifestyle changes I don't bike as much as I used to. I've been looking into buying a new roadie or cross-trek soon, something steel, though. I'm old school:) I love the old lugs and the general look of the 1970s-80s road frames.

I've got 4 frames tucked away in my basement, and 1 fully-refurbished Trek 760 road racer with vintage Shimano and Campy parts. Her name is Betty.

I've always wanted to own a Rivendell, just for the sake of the name and their classic design.

You seem to like classics in general :) Personally, I'm a fan of "new and improved", though I realize they certainly don't always go hand-in-hand.

For a few years I had a "wannabe Italian" 2007 Colnago CLX, but I moved to a much less ideal riding location and took up marathon running, so I sold it about a year ago after it sat gathering dust. I opted not to buy another carbon frame until I'm living in an area where I'd like to bike more and can justify getting a quality build. My current "relaxation" bike is a Flyte SRS-2 frame with full dura ace 7800 (the groupset was dirt cheap from a mechanic friend). It's aluminum and I've had it since before the Colnago, but it's a good enough ride for the infrequent times I get out.

You actually aren't the first to mention Rivendell bikes to me and I agree that they do have a classic appeal. Maybe you can find your next bike there? Also, I can't imagine being a messenger in NYC...

That Flyte is a beautiful bike, streamlined design and dura-ace parts, it must ride like a dream. One of my first customized fixie frames was an aluminum Cannondale, but due to that infamous ally stiffness it proved too harsh for such hardcore urban riding. Perfect for geared bikes, though.

To be perfectly honest, due to my build (burly and tall, I always had more of a mountain biker's build than a racer's, although I had the acceleration for the velodrome, go figure) I should invest in a carbon-fiber frame, but am not financially solvent enough right now.

I've been a Surly customer for 10 years, and will either get my next frame from there or 'Dell, hopefully.

I worked as a messenger in NYC-Manhattan specifically-during the summer and fall of 2004. It was a rush but I was glad to get back to the midwest:)

On the other hand, if you live in a hilly, forest-covered area, there's the option of getting a mountain or crossover bike and getting in a heavier workout.

This thing builds a pretty effective jogging schedule for you, according to the goals and inital condition you set. Might be worth checking it out if you feel it's too hard for you now.

If you started you should keep going. You'll stop dreading it in less than a week, plus the results are worth it.

Try doing some upper body workout as well. Chin ups, pull ups, push ups as well as abdominal like sit ups, crunches, planks etc. It feels great to be drinking water, trying to eat healthy, and getting some exercise. I have more energy after working out and feel better when I wake up as long as I didn't push myself too hard.

If it doesn't hurt, it doesn't count...

Getting into an exercise routine is painful (especially the first try, when you're overenthousiastic and push yourself over the limit...). Once you got the routine (may take 3-4 rounds) it becomes easier, the pain goes away and you'll start feeling much better.

It depends. Knee pain, sprains or shin splints are not going to help your body. Burning is good, pain is not.
Don't push yourself to injury, that's a terrible way to work out.

Keep going. It's easy to quit within the first week of starting. If you force yourself to keep going, the second week becomes more of a habit and after that you actually look forward to it.

Keep it up! ^-^

Its either you'll die cuz of difficulty in breathing, from the initial pain or boredom. Like what do people think about while jogging? Its almost impossible to distract oneself. Therefore stick to the simpler exercises that doesnt try to kill you :P

for the boredom part,i think listening to music can help it.......

I too started working out recently, well running. I only made it about 3 minutes into the run before I realized I forgot something and had to turn around and come back. I forgot I'm old and lazy and dont like to exercise.

I've been doing P90X and it's going pretty good. I almost died on the first day and now I have about 5x the stamina after about 6 weeks.
Don't start off trying something too intense. I'd recommend a workout program as they're designed to step up over time. P90X3 or T25 are only 30 mins/day!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I did p90x for good results a few years back, but for a beginner my personal preference would be to do shorter, high intensity, low rep workouts in the gym to build up some muscle mass to work with. Once you've seen some gains that way, then move on to high-rep toning like p90x. As I say, personal preference. Edit: I'm not talking about getting "big", just enough muscle to burn calories more efficiently and power your workouts.

You're likely right in terms of efficiency, but I found I had a hard time getting motivated when starting out. Tony kind of pushes you through it and you actually get a decent workout in :)

The couch to 5k running programme is pretty good. :) Starts you off with 1 minute running sections only in the first week, broken up by walking, and gradually builds you up to running 30 minutes straight.

well, you don't have to jogg, or workout.
you can bike. i fence. there are tons of different sports.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I had one to one coaching about six hours a week for fencing, and another 10 hours of general practice against a club. It's a) expensive and b) something most people only do for a couple of hours a week max, which makes it a pretty terrible sport to use to get fit with. :P It's not exactly anywhere near as cardio as something like running, or strength training.

all true (i'm in a free club, but yes it is expensive)
