Every new football manager is slightly better than the previous one. But only "slightly", so giving more money just to get the same game with only a few differences is not wise. :/

Replace "football manager" with the newest sports game and the meaning will stay the same.

99% of reviews are from people who are reporting "bugs" because they are losing.
If you buy FM you know what you are getting, every year the best sports sim on the market bar none with seasonal updates and a few extra tweeks.
My advice, buy 2017, if you like football at all you'll like it.
Its my most played Steam Game by FAR and thats from 2008 on steam(when it first required steam to play it) and from 1993 from when I first played Championship Manager on the Amiga. I've owned every title since, and will continue to buy them until they lose their edge.

Varies.
Last season I holidayed a year then took over a team that got promoted that was previously unplayable in England. That was Blyth Spartans.
The season before I played as Southampton because I fancied giving myself a break from taking a small club to the big time and wanted to just win everything.
In 2012 I managed Bristol City with self imposed moneyball rules.
This year I played Southampton during the beta(that youth system is insane) and now I'm Ajax because I wanted to try the dynamic league system out. Making the Dutch league the best legue in the world seemed like a decent new challenge.
Overall, theres almost an unlimited amount of challenges you can set yourself. Take over Barcelona and win everything or take over your local club with 300 fans showing up and take them up the leagues over decades. Its upto you!

Ironically in the 98/99 season I played as them!
You can play any English team down to around the 9th tier. However you may need to holiday a year to make them playable from the start. If they are in the Conference North/South or above, you can play them from the start.

It took 6 minutes to find you here :3 I'm impressed

I disagree on the 99%. This might be right about those complaining about the game engine not accepting their tactics, but there are lots of valid critics.
I played many many football manager sims, though not the FM since 2013. One reason I stopped is because of their tendency to attempt making the game 'realistic' by adding more and more stuff, with the result that what they added was so lackluster that it made the game feel unrealistic and most importantly: Less fun.
When I read reviews (like this one) how unreasonable the player AI now acts about when, how and why they change their moods, I certainly don't feel like getting back into FM. That's just the kind of stuff that upsets me as a gamer

Yeah 99% was an overexageration.
Point was the "mostly negative" reviews are mainly done through people who are annoyed they are losing games. Like I said below, I understand the criticisms I just think in recent years they've become a bit harsh.

I couldn't tell you about it tbh as I stopped playing other sims a long time ago, I mostly play a new one I get to try it and don't like it.
Back when I was a kid there was a few CM choices and competitors, now I'd never look away from FM, but if its free its worth trying for sure.

The series really peaked at 2011. 2014 was pretty solid though. 2016 introduced some good stuff, and if you want a recent one I'd go for that over 2017 if you can find it for cheap enough. SI are getting a little lazy, and the changes they do make aren't always good ones.

I think the tweeks are usually unseen so people seem to think little has changed. This season the addition of social media I love! But as well the small things that just make your life easier are great. Like the pop up goal of the month and such.
That said I understand the criticisms that they've been labelled with over recent years with the lack of major new features.

personally i like 2017, there are some new features in it for interaction and social media 'newsfeed' wich is pretty nice
gameplay is basicly the same but they improved the 3d match a bit.
personally i just like to start fresh each year but it depends on how much time i have what i play.
Started as hungerford this year, managed to get promotion in my first season (ending 3th) but getting wooped in the national...

The nerdrage is building more because fm17 doesn't really feel massively different from fm11 but they charge us £30 a year regardless. If you've been gone a few years though 17 is a no brainer, it is better than what's come before... just not by much :)

I think if you are playing with a large database and/or a big real player picture/club logo addon, you should get 2017 since it has the 64-bit version. If you don't... it's up to you. As soon as I have enpugh money I'll get FM2017 since my saves are always crashing thanks to the 32-bit 4 GB RAM-limit...

Just buy the most recent one. What's fun about playing with outdated rosters? Unless you're not really into football.
