I know this topic has been asked before, but my boyfriend and I are looking for new suggestions so we want a current list!

So two questions: What is your favorite movie of all time? Also, which movie did you not expect to be as good as it was?

If it fits our interests, we want to make a list of movies you guys suggest and watch them!

obligatory answer of my own. I have several fav movies, but I'll go with Terminator 2 or The Prestige. The movie that surprised me was The Lego Movie.

Here are some small giveaways. I hope everyone has a fantastic New Year!

I agree with Edge of Tomorrow! I thought it was going to be incredibly generic but was happily surprised that I enjoyed it.

Kind of obvious/cliche answer, but my favorite is The Godfather. Having trouble picking the other answer, though...

Only Lovers Left Alive (Jim Jarmusch, 2013)

The biggest recent surprise was probably Roma. I mean, I'd enjoyed everything by Cuaron before that, but I didn't know this guy was a full-fledged genius.

The 13th floor. I watched it at a time where I didn't know anything about it and that's how anyone should watch it. Plus, it has Gretchen Mol.

American Beauty (I didn't expect it to be as good as it was either)

Tillsammans (Together!), a swedish movie by Lukas Moodysson, taking place in 1975. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203166/

Muriel's Wedding

The Thin Red Line (1998, dir. Terrence Malick) (I expected a war movie, it was that but only as a side dish, a beautiful timeless connecting movie underneath)

I recently saw a movie called Freaks, a low budget Sci Fi movie from last year. I didn't expect much but it was really well done. It's pretty dark with a really amazing child actress as the lead, the sort of movie where I don't want to give anything away. Sort of a Superhero movie.

I don't know what my fav is anymore, I have too many.

My favourite movie is probably something out of the Ghibli collection. (I can't tell you which one, because most are perfect at what they're trying to be, while all being completely different.)

The movie that surprised me with how much I enjoyed it was Metropolis. It's one of those classic films you expect to enjoy academically, but not as entertainment. Boy, was that wrong. My friend and I were glued to the screen, and each shot was incredibly beautiful.

Are you referring to the anime or the original silent film of Metropolis? Just asking because both were equally amazing.

The German film! I have seen part of the anime film, but it didn't really grab me. Beautiful animation, but I didn't find the plot as unique.

I was hoping you were referring to that one. IMO, it is one of a few films that is waaaaaay before its time!

My favorite movie is probably Kingdom of Heaven, a historical epic about the fall of Jerusalem during the Crusades. It may also be the movie that most-surprised me by how much I enjoyed it, though for the sake of variety I'll also say that Rogue One also fits that bill, as I was disappointed with the new mainline Star Wars movies, and expected far less of Rogue One, yet found it to be probably my favorite of the whole series.

The one I didn't expect to be as good as it was... Nightcrawler (2014). There are actually a few more, but if I have to pick just one, I would go with that one.

Favourite movie... That is a harsh one... It would be between Memento (2000), Akira (1988) and The Raid (2011). They are too different for me to just pick one :(.

The Prestige is one of my favourite movies too (along with Prisoners and Zodiac), and Terminator 2 one of my favourite occidental action movies.

I have 2, that suprised me
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - with Jim Carrey- i find Jim Carrey a tad grating normally so i went into the movie with low expectations and actually ended up really enjoying it
The Shawshank Redemption - i am not a fan of Stephen Kings work normally, so when i was given a pile of VHS tapes it was the very last one I watched, but it really suprised me

Don't have a single favorite movie, but I do have a favorite genre and that's noir. Sadly, this kind of movie barely gets made anymore. Anyway, here's my list https://www.slantmagazine.com/film/the-100-best-film-noirs-of-all-time/. Also, many of my favorite movies were made in the 20s and 30s. Silents are an acquired taste and it took me awhile to get into them, but now that they getting restorations, it's easy to see that some of them are amazing. So, I guess you could say, that those are the movies that surprised me the most.
