Hello and welcome to the madness!
The challenge is simple: Play and beat any 6 games, starting today, that have been featured in any given Humble Monthly/Choice bundle in one month.

The prize: God of War

Game length does not matter and I'm not looking for 100% achievement runs. So long as you play and beat 6 games, I'm happy. You can go easy mode and play a bunch of 1h games or go crazy and play 6 +30h games. So long as they were in a monthly at a given point, it is all good.

Just post a comment with either screenshots/ achievements showing that you fulfilled the criteria and I'll add on Steam and give you the link. Feel free to share your thoughts on the games you've played, but it is not required.

FAQ:

Why you doing this?

I hate money. That and I realized I've been subbed to the monthly for over six years (yes it has been that long, I checked) and it occurred to me that I've barely touched the games I've gotten from it, let alone played them. Figured the same would be true for a few others, so I figured this is a good way to change that. A sensible person would probably unsub in this situation, but please refer to the beginning as to why that will not happen.

I've played the first X minutes of a game, can I pick it for the event?

No. You cannot have any play time or achievements prior to the start of the event. The only exception is idle time from farming Steam cards.

Can I play a MP only game?

No. It needs to have an "end" in order for me to count it as beaten, so it needs to have a campaign/story mode.

If a game was sold as a non-Steam copy in a bundle (origin/uplay/drm-free/etc), can I pick it as a choice if I own a Steam copy?

No. The reason being that those who own a Steam copy would have an extra option that would not be available to everyone who bought the same bundle. If the game was originally sold as a non-Steam copy, but Humble later provided steam keys to everyone who bought the bundle, then the game would be allowed.

Why six games?

The first few monthlies had 6/7 games in them so I went with that.

How long are you going to do this?

Until my credit card statements gives me nightmares.

This event "ends" on February 1st when the next HB Choice releases, though the giveaway itself will end the next day. If you manage to finish game number six in between that time, feel free to post, but know that I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to give you the link in time.

Good luck, have fun and stay safe.
Thanks for reading, and may you vanquish all your enemies.

I have no idea when I will have the time to get this done as well, but lets give it a go.

Game Achievements Playtime Bundle Status
Poly Bridge 15/22 32,4 (3h idle) March 2017 Humble Monthly #17 Beaten
Hiveswap Friendsim Screenshot 8,6h October 2021 Humble Choice (#23) Completed

Orwell: Keeping an Eye On You 19/27 5,9 (1,8h idle) October 2017 Humble Monthly #24 Beaten

Welp, somehow managed it :D Even tho I had a nasty game breaking bug at the end of 112 Operator that caused me losing some time unnecessarily on it.

Thank you for organising this :)

Thanks for clarification, I asked because of the post name monthly in a month so figured you'd get the whole month!

The name implies you get a whole month, and you do: From Humble Monthly to Humble Monthly. πŸ˜‰

HB just counts a little differently:

Humble reveals a new set of games on the first Tuesday of every month at 10 am PT.

It should be noted that Simulacra 1 & 2 came together in the Monthly, so I think both may be needed to count as 1?

But I might be wrong, since I they were 2 separate keys, just 1 choice.

I think its ok since both of them are different game and I already finish playing simulacra. I could change it though if its not accepted afterwards xD

They're counted as two separate games. While they came as a pair, they are two separate games and they were given as two separate keys.

Source: my entry last month had me completing both and they were classified as two separate games.

That's nice, I always assumed they were one since the choice was Simulacra 1 + 2, but was never really sure, I'll need to remember that. :)

Thank you for the continued monthlies. Very much intrigued what will be up for grabs in February.

Games for January:

Kathy Rain (November 2016)

Achievements - "Been there, done that"

If I had no knowledge of Kathy Rain going in beforehand, I could easily envision it as a classic point-and-click adventure straight out of the 1990s, rather than a modern one styled after its predecessors. The game is mostly effective at reducing the frustration and lack of direction that can be present in older adventure games while still maintaining the look and feel of its inspirations.

Plot-wise, I felt like something was a bit lacking in the main story, but perhaps I'm not really using my imagination when it comes to the supernatural elements that are eventually uncovered. (Story spoiler) The abortion subplot was handled clumsily at times, but I do like that your character can express a range of different reactions in reflecting on her decision, and they are all treated as valid choices.

FRAMED Collection (September 2021)

Achievements - "Got a light?"

FRAMED Collection is, of course, stylish as all get-out, and the gameplay is mostly good enough to carry the story forward. Some solutions could feel illogical or unexpected, but ultimately that may be unavoidable with such trial-and-error mechanics. The box factory almost made me use a guide, but I was eventually able to figure it out.

I did appreciate the quality of life changes and more cinematic storytelling in the second game, which for me elevated it significantly.

SIMULACRA 2 (April 2021)

Achievements - "Big scoop" (spoilers in achievement names)

To an extent, SIMULACRA 2 suffers from a similar symptom that happens when smaller indie games with experimental or unconventional gameplay try to expand their scope and build upon their success. Still, I do feel interested in playing again, especially since the developers introduced a speed-up mechanic for subsequent playthroughs.

This sequel focusing on a group of online influencers feels less compelling than the unassuming ordinary young woman from the first game. The themes of being able to obscure and manipulate your image on the internet felt more organic when it wasn't meshing with understandable but well-worn critiques of social media personalities.

That said, I did appreciate some of the silly stuff the developers included this time around, such as this hustle grindset character's music video.

GARAGE: Bad Trip (October 2021)

Achievements - "Gestalt"

GARAGE: Bad Trip is not a flat-out bad game, but it is likely the most frustrating game I have played for Monthly in a Month. I understand the developers' intent with the combat and atmosphere, and it can work at times. Frequently, however, the experience is hampered by awkward combat controls, jarring visual effects and poor navigation and signposting. The game's issues culminated in an arduous stealth section through a prison just over halfway through the course of the storyline.

GARAGE's plot has hints of something intriguing, but the storyline is never really spiced up in an adequate way.

Hidden Folks (October 2018)

Achievements - "All targets found"

I'm not normally a huge fan of Where's Waldo type games. Hidden Folks didn't really change my mind, but it admittedly has plenty of charm and wit in its minimalistic fashion. Maybe it's laziness, but I did prefer the smaller maps to the big ones sprawling with movement.

The developers did well in keeping the folks you have to find diverse and fresh. Having dark mode or sepia mode was a welcome visual option for me as well.

BPM: Bullets per Minute (November 2021)

Achievements - "Defeated Nidhogg"

I must not be rhythmically inclined, because shooting along to the beat felt rather difficult. Eventually, roguelike luck came through and I got a weapon/item combination that was strong enough to work for the late levels. BPM has an interesting concept that, to me, feels a bit incomplete, but could really go somewhere with some polish. I wasn't a big fan of some of the strong visual effects and color palette, but I appreciated the ability to at least turn down some of the saturation.
