"The Mirror" by Marlys Millhiser
It´s a story about a bird that creates tons of threads and one day the mirror talks to the bird and tells him, that he will loose a feather for every thread created.....

"I've never read any Poe or Lovecraft ."
Well, that's a good place to start then ;)

I'd also recommend Charles Stross' work, although that mixes in spycraft & science-fiction with the horror, and most of the horror side is very shamelessly drawing on Lovecraft.

Not exactly considered horror, but Dante's Inferno is a must-read if you haven't picked it up yet.

If you're not sure if Lovecraft is your thing, you can read the whole of The Call of Cthulhu here on Wikisource, it's freely available, and should introduce the basic atmosphere of most of Lovecraft's works, and it's not long -- you can manage a fair bit, if not all, before visiting the store. :-)

Stephen king is majority of books movies i have read/seen [ IT/ Last Stand my favourites]myself but i found Dante Alighieri's Divine comedy an awesome trip though wouldnt consider it horror i geuss. So have u ever thought about reading horror manga's? If not and maybe interested there are quite some good ones /bad ones freaky ones and ''dirty'' ones'' Varying from serial killers, world disorder, ghosts and some apocalyptic psychological manga's.

If interested have a look at this one its ongoing atm still but just to give u a general idea in how manga's can be a differnt kind of thing worth being to explore http://www.mangago.me/read-manga/00_mhz/bt/245248/Ch0/1/

You said that you have readed enough of Stephen King... but... have you read "It"? D:
Also, you should try:
Ghost Story by Peter Straub.
Hell House by Richard Matheson
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
Books of Blood by Clive Barker (Recomended)

Well, those will give you a good time of "fun" D:

Read this one. Not only will it make you forget the other horrors, it'll make your life a living horror; forcing you to live the rest of your life hiding under your bed in the fetal position.

I thought I was replying to the thread itself, sorry.

But yeah, already read FSoG as well. Not only is it terribly written, but I've read people who have been in abusive relationships see it as a horror novel.

Not a horror per se. But terrifying, and relevant to recent events.

I'm not much about horror novels, but I enjoyed "The terror" by Dan Simmons who is a good horror novel writer. He also wrote some Sci-Fi but started with the horror and won some awards about horror novels.

"The novel is a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin's lost expedition of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror to the Arctic to force the Northwest Passage in 1845–1848. In the novel, while Franklin and his crew are plagued by starvation and scurvy and forced to contend with mutiny and cannibalism, they are stalked across the bleak Arctic landscape by a monster"
