You got something wrong - The Android phone is for porn

I remember when I said $10,000 was the most I'd ever spend on a car.
Comment has been collapsed.
Wrong comparison. The point was that since uttering said statement, I have spent more than ten grand on a car.

Not worth it. With $1.000 bucks I can make a great stew.

I'm going in the opposite direction. My current phone (Samsung Note Edge) had an original MSRP of about $800, though I bought it for about $500. I plan to replace it with a $300 phone next time. After seeing what a phone like Zuk Z2 Pro can do for less than this amount, I'm not willing to pay more just for a bigger brand. I'm definitely not buying any iPhone. The one I have from work (iPhone 6) is relegated to a backup phone, and when I occasionally use it I hate every minute of the experience.

I went the same direction you did. LG G3 Flagship phone worth $700 (I got it for free)
This time, I went with a ZTE Axon 7 for $225.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm assuming you're talking about the ZTE Axon 7.
Do you like the phone and the features?
Comment has been collapsed.
I spent €70 on my last phone and its the longest lasting touchscreen phone I've had. Price often only buys a brand name

I don't get the appeal either. Especially because Apple is a company that doesn't give a shit about it's costumers. Everything is overpriced and they release a new model every year... 'Because who cares? We only want your money!'
Comment has been collapsed.
1000$ phone just to be used 90% of the time on Instagram. People should just start buying cameras again. And srsly? Face recognition, who needs that? It's like they are adding those stuff just to say they added something new and completly useless, cuz it will be the same as iphone 7 most likely. And no headphone jack is the worst thing they could do to iphones....
The people who buy these things are the rich people just to show off... yeah if I was a model/youtuber making 30k/month minimum, I'd buy that shit, but that's not happening folks
Comment has been collapsed.
Well... Note 8 is also expensive like that ($929.99).
Comment has been collapsed.
I know they will do that, but as you can see in this post. There are so many "Apple hater" and "Fuck rich people" here.
Comment has been collapsed.
An other bullshit apple product, still ppl will buy it because they think it will give them status. I'm downgrading with phones as well first smartphone was 500 now a 170 one.it has internet you can call and play apps, its all you need really. Too bad the software doesnt stay operatively after a few years and you have to buy a new one. Anyway back on apple I wouldnt even buy it if I were happen to be a millionaire :-)
Comment has been collapsed.
I make it a point not to concern myself with how other people spend their money.
If a phone does what I need it to do (which isn't much, honestly), I'm (usually) happy with it.
Would I ever spend 1k on a phone? Hell no.
That's a lot of hookers, crack cocaine, and Bombay Badonkadonks magazines..

I actually like android because of the openness and not just the huge price difference but up untill some time ago I admited that if you wanted an easy to use phone and had the money it was an acceptable option, but they seem to want to just sell a brand instead of a piece of tech for the past few years.
They seriously pushed their luck with the whole "being brave and removing the headphone jack" but now they're definitely betting all into being just a luxury item instead of making something practical, for the good of the tech industry I hope they crash and burn and go back to making hardware and give up on the fashion brand mentality.

Android's had this feature since late 2011. You've probably seen people unlock phones with their face lots of times - you just didn't notice it because there's nothing to see: someone looks at their phone and it unlocks. Not as secure as a PIN, but simple.
People don't seem to realize it, but when you are looking at your phone, your phone is often looking back at you. It also listens more than you might expect. This isn't paranoia, just a fact associated with the way assistant and security features of the OS and various apps work. Whether it bothers you or not is your call, but as with all things related to privacy and security, it's best to have your opinions and decisions be informed ones.

Yeah, I can't believe they are trying to charge that. I need to go back to using a flip phone and call it a day.

in the end, it's their flagship/luxury product. I just bought a brand new iphone 6, because I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I do believe apple makes superior products. I have used Android phones as well, and overall, (once you get used to the different operating system) the user experience is better with ios, and that's what I want. I am willing to pay for a superior product, which to me is as much the UX as it is the hardware apple always excelled at UX. But I'm not willing to pay for some of the extra frills, such as facial recognition that I don't want to beta-test, or an even better camera with which I'll take crappy pictures, etc., so I'm happy to buy their entry-level products.

the ios is pretty good at being simple to use - but apple don't manufactur phones - so I am unsure where you get the idea that they make superior products - the largest supplier of parts for the iphone is SAMSUNG :)
gotta love the irony of that fact :)
Comment has been collapsed.
From a business perspective, Apple's supply chain management is incredibly interesting. But in the end they're still responsible for the manufacture thereof - they just prefer to use outside / independent vendors rather than direct ownership of subsidiaries. In particular, the two most expensive parts are the screen and the memory - both of which benefit from economies of scale, so the larger the manufacturer, the cheaper the component. Samsung happens to be the largest supplier in the world for memory (at least, the kind used in the iphone) and therefore can provide the components at a much lower cost than if Apple were to make them themselves. Remember, iphone is not in the parts business, never was, whereas Samsung's ventures do include electronic components.

from all the tech stuff I have read apple sells, and designs, the iphone (and even some of there recent designs are from out of house companies) - almost none of it is manufactured by them - at best Apple could be described as an assembler - but never a manufacturer - even Apple said as much themselves in the early days of the iphone (but they are very good at what they do - selling stuff :)
I had one of the first iphones - but not had one since - cannot afford it !
Comment has been collapsed.
Apple - and all computer manufacturers, for that matter - has never manufactured all of its components. As a matter of fact, the very first apple contained only off-the-shelf components - but they wrote the software. IBM (the original "PC") only manufactured the BIOS, everything else was off-the-shelf.
When it comes to electronics in general, and computers in particular, that's the business model.
Comment has been collapsed.
and I never said that they didn't do any of that ! - but they themselves have stated that they are not a manufacturer - which is all I was asserting in the facts that I noted above ! (sorry if that upsets you in any way - not the intention)
at one point I wished that I could afford a new one (original one was second hand many years ago) - but then I realised that any company who charges say $1000 for a phone that probably costs them $300 to make is hardly something that I could support - I can spend my money on better things and buy a cheaper phone :) (still - all fair to those who like to purchase that kind of thing)
Comment has been collapsed.
my statement was that apple made superior products - you countered by saying they don't manurafture the products. That's true, but the products are manufactured t their exact specifications. Which is how a lot of businesses operate.
Nike doesn't own any shoe factory either, but nobody would claim they don't make shoes
not getting mad, just having a discussion
As for how much it costs them to make, well, I don't know about the new phone, but the iphone 7 was estimated cost $219.80 in raw materials, and an estimated $5 in manufacturing costs, with a retail price of $649, ostensibly for $424 in profit per unit.
However, subtract from that shipping costs to get the products to the stores and the cost of operating retail stores before you get the per-unit net revenue. Retail typically has a 50% markup, so $325 goes to the retailer, reducing profit to about $100 per unit note that that's for 3rd party retailers. Apple probably keeps around 10% more, or $65, for sales in their own stores
Note that so far we haven't covered cost of transportation or import duties, and we also haven't covered the cost of licensing fees (welcome to the world of technology, where everything you could ever conceive of has already been patented)
Let's say that that's another $20 right there. best guess estimate after reviewing various sources
But then we also still need to cover design and development. Paying tech people to come up with new ideas, turning those ideas into prototypes, and testing those prototypes is expensive and time-consuming. You need to take into account the costs associated with all that stuff. R&D is probably about $20 per unit too, give or take.
I haven't gone into overhead and management, which doesn't only include executive pay, but also things like logistics, customer support, returns, etc., because, quite frankly, it'd be too time-consuming for me to figure out. But based on the above, we're left with about $60 per phone $125 if sold in an Apple store for overhead, management, and profit.

oooof that was a read - anyway yeah okay - you are right - please accept my appologies for your apparent misunderstanding of all that I said :) and again I reiterate my appologies for apparently triggering your responses - apple good and do manufacture their phones :) - and they are always worth the cost to the end consumer - hope that helps to allow you to move forward :-P (but if not, then I appologise again)
the arguments over R&D and developement of components etc are somewhat odd - as apple don't make those things !!! the other companies do the research for all of those components (apple does not)
the cost of a chinese phone with all the same components - indeed some are better as apple uses old tech - cost alot less - but then they don't have an apple logo I guess :)
like I said - apple are good at selling stuff - actually they are f'ing amazing at it :)

LOL - that is what every company says when they want to lessen their tax bill - it is a known tax scam the world over - most large companies park their money in the R&D sector - then find ways to pass it around their subsids - Amazons is drone R&D - they do some serious work on it, but it never costs as much as they park there :-P
Comment has been collapsed.
not quite, but feel free to think it.
there is no "parking money in R&D". The way the tax "scam" works is that the patents are owned by a subsidiary in a low-tax country, and the business units in the high-tax countries pay royalties to that subsidiary.
R&D is money actually spent on R&D. Apple is a tech company, and is constantly investing in new technology.
Now, part of the reason it's conflated, is that after the companies have shifted profits to the off-shore subsidiary, they can't bring it back without paying additional taxes. So the offshore subsidiary pays for all the R&D that they do.

well I used to work for epson (just to clarify it was epson inks - hence my love of dyes and inks) and we parked money in R&D on many occasions - you say you are going to look into something - park the money and then say nothing came of your research - then pass the money onto a subsid or back to the parent company - so I am more than free to think on the things I watched happen year on year (and all said that others did the same thing) :) - so thank you for saying I can feel free to think that; based on what I saw, I will :) (it was a crappy practice - but corporations still do it today - even APPLE)
A trillion dollars actually spent on R&D - don't make me laugh, it hurts my ribs :) - let me guess, 100 million spent on research to see if adding X to the name will boost profits :) giggle (looking at their books it might though - sigh - wish it would do the same to some of my ink/dye creations - X-fabric (sounds okay :-P )

Well, I for one can't wait to get my hands on the iPhoneX. Why?
I admit that it's not for everybody and it's waaay overpriced, but it's an elegant overpriced phone :)
Comment has been collapsed.
That article is looking at it wrong. The iPhone X is basically just an iPhone 8 model. Same hardware with the following changes: Different form factor (i.e. size/shape), OLED screen (instead of LCD), non-rectangular screen, FaceID instead of TouchID.
Everything else is identical to the iPhone 8.

Dont worry in couple years we get an album with pictures of all the Apple executives diving into a pool of money like scrooge mcduck for only 499.99
I will NEVER understand the people who buy the apple products ... thats overpriced pile of crap
I have an iPhone i got for my birthday last year ... that i havent touched cause its just inferior to my android device.
you get those ppl who spent a fortune on a mac... Laptop ? if thats even a laptop ... whose specs are equal to something that came out 6-8 years ago yet its pricing is higher then current high tier ones .
shit phones who cost about 5 times the price of an android device with same specs...cause... reasons ?
And tablets with resolution that went out of fashion about 20 years ago .
Yup ... yet ppl still buy that shit .... reminds me of CoD

I just bought a brand new iphone 6, because I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I do believe apple makes superior products.
...
not to get into a flame war, but I've used both Apple and Android phones recently, and while they both have strengths and weaknesses, it's not fair to say that either is superior to the other
Comment has been collapsed.
It's adequate imho. I could have done a better job clarifying my post but I'm lazy and as it seemed so obvious to me despite my relatively limited intellectual capabilities that it didn't feel important enough. In hindsight, it's obviously a pretty confusing post. Errare humanum est
Comment has been collapsed.
Um ...yeah ppl kinda nailed you there mate.
Nice being the hypocrite here.
Apple products are overpriced for what they are , and no one can deny that .
It's just for the wealthier ppl who buy it mostly cause it's the expensive thing for rich ppl.
Android offer more freedom in what you can do with your device , with other then screen quality nearly same characteristics for about 1/3rdthe price... And performance wise they are not that far apart
But yeah I mean you don't want to get in a flame war , or just shit on what you said like 2 minutes before that.
I got an iPhone 5 for my birthday last year ....and used it twice .... Once to find out that half it's futures won't work if I don't have mobile data enabled at all times . And once couple months ago to check if it's still working .
I'd honestly sell it instantly if it wasn't a gift .
Duno what ppl find appealing in paying twice as much for something just so it have a half eaten apple logo on it's back ... And introduce futures like... Hey we removed the audio jack on the phone and made wireless headphones .... Uh also here is some wire for them cause ppl keep losing them .
Aaaaaaaaand that's another 100$ .
Or a laptop with an OS made in ancient egyptian language which can hardly run a 4k video ... And it's on par price wise with something with a Titan inside it ....
Then again not my money ... Ppl are free to waste them on whatever overpriced crap they want to .

the overcharging for their products is especially more galling when their are chinese phones, using more up to date tech, on the market for signficantly cheaper prices - most of which are made at the same factories that make the iphone for apple :-)
so we really do have to admire the selling prowess of Apple at the very least :)
Comment has been collapsed.
giggle - someone has to have mocked that up somewhere by now :)
I really used to admire them alot in the early days of computing (used to edit audio and video beautifully on my mac) - but once they transitionedfrom using their own processors to using intel ones - it was clear that they had changed to profit over substance (but I do love how they can sell anything notheless - and the newer chips gave gains in non editing areas at least over the powerpc architecture)
Although, there are murmers that they may switch back out - especially given that all their other products don't use intel - so who knows! (they already test/use low power mode chips, as a side loader for touchbar, in the macbook pro - so it could happen)
Comment has been collapsed.
As long as so many people keep buying it, they are right to increase the price. I wonder what will be the threshold where people will stop buying it.
But I don't really care, they never got a dime from me and never will, I don't have that much money and, if I had it, for sure I wouldn't waste it on a thing that can get stolen or easily broken or that I can forget somewhere.

SAN FRANCISCO — When Apple unveils its new top-of-the-line iPhone on Tuesday, it isn’t just expected to offer features like infrared facial recognition and wireless charging for the first time.
The company will also enter new territory on price: The latest phone will start at about $1,000, compared with the $769 minimum for its current top phone, the iPhone 7 Plus.
“It’s a whole new threshold,” said Debby Ruth, a senior vice president at the tech consulting firm Frank N. Magid Associates. I really do think it’s going to make people pause.”
From the iPhone’s introduction a decade ago, Apple has always priced it as a premium product — a more refined and polished alternative to the legions of cheaper smartphones available in the market.
But this time, the company is pushing into luxury territory. The new phone will cost as much as the company’s entry-level MacBook Air laptop. “They’re doubling down on their strategy: They are going much more to the high end,” Ms. Ruth said.
Apple declined to comment before the product announcements scheduled for Tuesday. (On Saturday, Steven Troughton-Smith, a developer who combed through the iOS 11 software, found references indicating that the new high-end phone will be called the iPhone X.)
Investors are betting that Apple’s move up the price ladder will pay off with much higher profits, especially in mature markets like the United States and Western Europe, where many of the buyers will be people upgrading from older iPhones. The company’s stock has risen by nearly 50 percent over the past year as anticipation has built about the 2017 models.
