Linux is pretty cool, but you've got to have a love for interfacing through command prompts.

And whats wrong with command prompts? I guess you're not an 80's 90's kid, and you never used a C64 or DOS on PC.

Sexy command prompt > crap "futuristic" UI

I'm plenty comfortable with command prompt but I wouldn't mind seeing more things get solid gui's.

If for no other reason than: more gui's == easier for less technical types to use == more people use linux == more hardware & software support == more games and gadgets that are linux friendly

Maybe for those whose gaming originated on Linux or those with smaller libraries, basically those that had to focus on games with Linux support.

I started gaming with Windows and a large portion of my library won't ever support another OS. Then that's only considering my Steam library. GOG supports Linux but like Steam that doesn't mean a given game will. Neither Origin or Uplay have Linux support.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

yes, gog also have games for linux. But only Valve are doing great work for linux gamers.

Permalink

That's mostly what I was thinking. Sure a lot of indie devs are doing good at bringing support to Linux, but I still play a lot of AAA titles that focus solely on Windows. Hate that they do it, but I want to play the games so... Windows it is.

In 2017 some very very good games will appear on Linux along with Windows no need to wait for a Port... Linux games are starting to pop up like mushrooms after rain so the future looks bright.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The future isn't now though. As of right this moment every single one of my 6000 games will run on Windows. According to SteamDB however there are only 2000 products in the entire Steam catalog that are confirmed to work on Linux. Even accounting for all the potential junk in my library that's just not good enough for me to switch. So as far as compatibility goes Windows is the clear winner.

That's pretty much the same boat I'm in. I have a second computer for all the crap that I can't play on Linux but would love if I could ditch Windows entirely. I've heard good things about Play on Linux (POL) but didn't have much luck with it myself when trying to set up Mass Effect 1 there. Then again, could easily have been the game (I also had problems on my Windows box until I resorted to a fresh OS install)

Well if you have some tips on what I should look into, I'd make some time to do so... Would love being able to build my next pc without having to buy windows again. Honestly feel like MS is constantly pushing to make more and more money without offering anything new that's worth it.

Here here, only Linux I even forgot how Windows looks!

Some triple A games run much better on Linux than Windows... no reason for touching Windows.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Linux is pretty cool but I feel encumbered by having to make sure any any new game I purchase has Linux compatibility (had Linux on a different PC few years ago) so, yeah. And then there are scumbags like Activision who charge separately for Windows and Mac OS (and there was a case of separate charge for Linux too if I remember correctly)

Hence for gaming, Windows will always be the One.

Your lovely game is Dont starve. It work perfectly in linux! I was played this game for many hours.
I have about 1000 games for linux but i havent a time to play each game.
Its not needed to buy any game. At that moment linux has enought games to be gaming platform. I think so.

Plus there are too many games that don't work with Linux

Could also do a dual-boot. I've had good luck with Mint (aside from having to read up on the whole UEFI secure boot thing which was a real pita... short version: install from usb, even if you like dvd's).

Use KDE Plasma 5 as desktop and you will see about the so called "worst perfomance", I play only on Linux and outperforms Windows

More FPS than on Windows.

I guess my point is how do you know that, though? Do you install Windows, test the FPS, and then reinstall Linux and find that you get more FPS on Linux?

I have a spare HDD with Win 7 installed that I have pluged in and I noticed that I have higher FPS on Linx.

Only about 25% of games show improved performance in Linux, and only those games optimized for Linux.
Most games, however, show a 30% or more increase in performance in Windows 10. AMD drivers for Linux are a complete mess most of the time.

Google it. Linux has a long way to go before it competes on an even playing field with Windows.

Why should the DE change something about performance (if it is not itself eating all the RAM and CPU power?)?
If you really want a small performance hit as possible you could run steam completely without DE and just fire up a WM, or even just X, but in that case, the games don't behave very well.

Count me in. Although I dual-boot, I don't remember the last time I booted up Windows.

Some clarification on some common misconceptions:
You don't need to know how to use the command line interface to use Linux.
Games' support for Linux is inferior to Windows and (probably) MacOS, but it's improving. Google "Feral Interactive" if you want to see the heroes Gaming needs.

I used to dual boot linux and windows. Now I'm on windows with an Ubuntu VM. Was tempted by System76 (their laptop comes preinstalled with Ubunt) when I was looking for a new laptop, as it looks like they have the best keyboard layout among the ones available now... full sized arrow keys, home/end/pg up/pg down keys... (seriously, why do designers get rid of so many useful keys (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)

i have worked with CentOS in school, also have tested Ubuntu and Mint on my laptop i would say i liked more Mint because of the panel and with the Cinnamon interface it looks like Windows (and may be thats the reason i like it more).
I have seen alot of linux distros out there so the problem now its witch one to chose XD.
im corrently using Mint 18 in dual boot with Windows 10, when i just want to use the net or watch some series or movies i use Mint, case it does the job pretty well.

How do U guys game on that without DX? I hate Windows OSs after Win7 and I still use windows mainly because I'm a gamer. so if there is a way to play PC(Windows) games on Linux and the FPS is not much different I will go back to Linux again. JIC I know about virtual machine

The highest FPS you will get is with the KDE Plasma desktop, You can use any distro that has the Plasma desktop but you can use this: https://downloads.sourceforge.net/manjarolinux/manjaro-kde-16.10.3-stable-x86_64.iso

Is a nice looking desktop... https://manjaro.org/get-manjaro/
