Honest question, what is with all the hate on Uplay?

I know I don't care for Uplay or Origin and would prefer to have all my games under steam if I could. But why do people have all the hate on Uplay's client? I have 2 games on Uplay so far and they have not given me any problems so far.

because UPlay is more down than up. And if it's down, you can't play anything, even if you have it on Steam

Ah, did not know that.

Didn't know it was the "Always on" kinda thing. That level of DRM typically ends up with the bootleg version ending up being the superior version.

No, it's not "always on". After you'll be able to login, you can play even if they cut your internet.

Of course, sometimes Uplay will just not log you in...

It used to be a bad service, but it's pretty good now. I think a lot of people just wish they could have all their games on steam, which is understandable.

My biggest gripe with it, is that it doesn't clearly show you which DLC's you have already purchased/installed for any given game (like Steam does).

And additionally, if you buy the DLC on Steam, then you have to manually enter this Steam code within the Uplay game (in-game) which is a real PITA.

How I wish it was all automated, organized, and concise.

So yeah, the DLC's basically.

Ah yes that's true. You can only see that information in the Account Information window. The one thing I do like about that window is you can view all the keys you've activated in the past. I wish steam showed you that, so you could compare bundle keys in case you get confused by past activations. Anyway, I would hope that Uplay continues to improve.

Usually it has lots of problems when at Day1 of Big Releases - people are not able to play their games because servers are overloaded.

Had problems with Far Cry 3 on release, had to be started in offline mode, otherwise it wouldn't load. And few weeks back I wanted to play Splinter Cell Blacklist, but instead of game I was stuck on Uplay Splash Screen.

But all in all, people don't like Uplay because Steam simply does it all better. Steam doesn't need you to first download, then install game. Steam installs newest patch, while on Uplay I was patching Blacklist every time I was starting it, because instead of grabbing 1.10 it first patched it to 1.01, then 1.02, then 1.03... (or whatever those numbers were).

And what happens with your saved games? Is there a local copy?
And then, is the local copy synced the next time you log in?

if i recall correctly, uplay always takes the newer save file. so if your local one is newer, it gets synced with the uplay cloud.

Are you fucking kidding???? It's not the most stable of clients, sure, but more down than up????? Fucking really? And you can most certainly play your games in offline mode, just like on Steam, so you're just full of crap... On what planet do you live on? Also, Steam is not very stable either these days and I don't see anyone bitch about it...

Damn, not sure how they expected to have anyone like that with those restrictions.

Hell, to me, I see Steams current family share as too restrictive, that is flat out unusable too much of the time.

Personally during ACIII and SC Blacklist, every few times I went to play, it kept failing to login due to server errors. What really annoys me is that those were games I bought on Steam and was pretty much mafia bullied into uplay which didn't freaking work. Never again. I didn't buy AC: Rogue or Anno mainly because I don't want to bother with uplay.

To note: I'm not in love with the pointless origin either but I don't mind it since it never failed to work.

This. I don't mind an extra service, but at the end of the day if it's going to be unreliable half the time then why force it on me? Companies should be happy when platforms (like Steam) sell their titles and not get the grandiose idea of launching their own gaming clients.

Because a lot of people don't even have arguments. They just "hate" uplay because everybody hates uplay...

In the beginning of uplay there were some problems afaik but in the last year, i never had problems with uplay or origin.
Tbh. there are some good games on origin and uplay. I would love to see them on steam but... That is how it is. you will not see HL2 on Origin too, and Valve startet all the DRM-Client stuff back in the days so if you hate uplay or origin, you should hate steam too.

and if we talking about privacy, i don't think that they are so different from each other.

if we talk about support and stuff, ea is even better than valve

My point was unless somebody flat out says that they dislike uplay for no reason you cannot presume that they are hating on it due to public opinion. Chances are they could have had genuine issues in the past and at this point the public image is so bad that if they stay away from uplay after hearing the horror stories, can you really blame them?

Preordered game from one of their official distributor, and it worked fine. Done campaign, some MP duel matches, then got bored and stopped playing.
Decided to replay campaign liek year after that (maybe now they fixed bugs), but nope, wrong cd key (game listed in uplay, can be downloaded whit it).
And yes, contacted them again, but have no idea what they replied, its been awhile ago.

My issue is the unneccesary bloat alone. And a ton of reason beyond. As i've described earlier this reduces attractiveness by magnitudes. Could be arsed to hoop through the loops but the price point is a far between. Close to or zero cost only. Currently running HoMM7 "demo" beta but the key was provided for free.

Imho UBI is beyond stupidty.. The only way to start a gameservice beneath steam would be to offer more attractive conditions... Almost to match gog.com. And start building a fanbase. The pistol tactique which valve used in its early time does not seem to be effective in creating a halo effect and attract customers.

There are plenty of games on steam without DRM. Anyone who puts their game on steam has the option to make it DRM free or not. And in any case, the DRM is not restrictive anyway. As long as you are logged in, you are fine!

One could argue that Steam does not indicate wheter games come.with protection enabled so basically anything is protected, as you can't differentiate.

I did not think about it that way, so that is true. However the easiest way to tell is to go to the games folder and launch the game form there. If it opens the steam window "launching ____" then you know it has DRM. If that does not open, it is DRM free.

Seriously i haved a lot more problems with Uplay that i had with Origin. On origin at least the game runs but on uplay is another story. Very poor syncing especaly on some games like Heroes 6. I just can't stad it the only good is that the games are still in Steam and you can buy them from steam.

You don't have a problem because:
You didn't get the games at launch.
You didn't run into Ubisoft when their DRM was at it's worst.

But at the end of the day it will always be a stupid additional client that you have to run.

"Oh no, now I waste another 20 seconds to launch that client. Well, let's just not play any games from U-play."

It might have been worse, but that is no reason to hate on it now. I think most people just hate it because most people hate it.

I have like 8 games on UPlay so I'm not saying that and it's a perfectly legitimate reason to dislike UPlay because it's completely unnecessary.

Also because my other games are not on UPlay I rarely launch it so it's forever out of date which means a client update which is more like 10 minutes. 10 minutes out of the precious hour I could have spent playing the game, don't get much more weekday time for games these days.

And if it's very out of date then client plain doesn't launch and you have to google and redownload the darn thing all over again.

That's true, but I don't see why Ubisoft should make their games on steam. It's not like Valve is willing to make their games on U-play or Origin. They just all have seperate launchers. And sometimes steam needs to update as well. So sometimes you have to wait for that.

Most people have a simple reason on why they dislike Uplay or Origin.
Comfort.

It's much more comfortable using one platform (eg. Steam) instead of multiple ones.
I rather have all of my stuff in one place too.

But it's true that Uplay had some annoying issues with the online thing.
I remember a friend of mine who wanted to play Assassins creed but had no stable internet connection which made it hard for him.
Personally I would still say that the main issue is comfort. If Uplay would've been there 2 years before steam, maybe this would be everyones choice and we all would hate steam - who knows :)

I've personally never had problems with uplay. I've read alot of folks having trouble with it though - stuff like not logging in, losing save games. Again, for me personally I've not had a problem though. Just takes a long time to get things going when starting a game through steam. Played only Valiant Hearts and From Dust on uplay.

When uPlay is working I have no issues. I have several games on uPlay that I really enjoy. But I have also had a lot of problems with uPlay, from being unable to play games for days or even weeks because of server issues at their end to their client crashing my computer or just the service randomly losing my save games or suddenly deciding that I have never owned games that I have dozens of hours of play time in. And although their support is really nice it is only good at giving me free games as compensation when they don't know how to fix stuff.

When I see games use uPlay now I won't rule them out - but I do find myself very cautious about them...

Comment has been collapsed.

I look at it like this --

If all games were available on all three services - Origin, Uplay, and Steam - which service would I choose? I would choose Steam, simply because it feels more like a "gamer's platform" rather than a simple "we wanna make more money" platform. Uplay and Origin offer nothing that Steam doesn't offer, and Steam has far more features than either of the other two. Steam is constantly moving forward with new and innovative features (and now even hardware, their own operating system, and quickly moving into multimedia), while the other two platforms are sticking to their guns and only selling their own games (and doing that just to cut out the middleman and make more money).

Having said that, Uplay is more of an inconvenience than anything (or, as someone above pointed out - it's a matter of comfort), and really offers zero advantage over Steam. I don't actively avoid Uplay, but I certainly think twice before purchasing a game that requires it.

For a start i'd ask what benefit do i gain, which disadvantages i need to expect?

+
Cloudsaves
Digital distribution

-
Online drm
Cloudsaves might be mandatory
Digital distribution only
Constant updates (might be disabled)
Complexity & fault layer on top of game, also security considerations
Games are locked onto account -> nonportable
Games cannot be sold
Lack of control

I don't feel any urge to use uplay based games. Maybe for zero cost. But thats good. Could easily skip the last humble bundle when i saw it was uplay only -> nice

I had the wonderful experience of needing an Origin account to play Mass Effect 2 & 3.

What I learned is that in order to buy DLC content for both games, I had to buy "credit packs" with real money then spend the credits on the DLC. Of course there was no combination of DLC that used up all your credits. So in addition to the DLC being pricey to begin with I also got to give Origin extra money in the form of purchased credits I'd never use.

I only have very few games on Uplay. Even then, I have a lot of issues.
I lost internet and thought I would play HoMM 6 in offline mode. It started just fine, but then coudlnt load the savegame because apparently they are in the cloud. Steam keeps a copy on my hard drive, so even when Im in offline mode it can still load savegames. Then most of the times, it wont even synchronize my savegames in the cloud. Aside from that, their storefront barely has any info about the games on it. And of course no trading games. On steam I get so much more than Uplay.

So far I only played one game on Uplay and technical problems I had with that game were solved by going offline in Uplay. There's something seriously wrong when a program that's supposed to be used online in the first place causes these kind of problems. Even GFWL didn't give cause me such troubles.

I'm a fucking idiot because I redeemed one more game key on Uplay, but now I'm hesitant to touch it.

Ubisoft has a habit of breaking their games with DRM, on both PC and consoles. I can't play Far Cry: Blood Dragon on PC, and the PS3 version of Child of Light had a update to add DRM that basically wrecked the stability of the game.

Basically i mean the more you use it the more problems you're bound to encounter.

Well, since you asked for it.

  1. The download, backup, and restore mechanism is just broken. On some games like HOMM VI, the game downloads on cache, and you can backup the game just by copying the whole directory for later install, then you can install the game for playing. But on some games like Watchdogs, you have to download all the game files just like that, then play. If you want to back-it-up for future install/play, you just can't. You need to download the whole thing again, not to mention Watchdogs is a pain in the ass download, sometimes you need to re-download again just because the file integrity error, although you can backup the game using some kind of workaround on internet.

  2. Not all new games have online/cloud saves. For instance, AC IV. Although the game is old itself, cloud save is broken. You can only use local save, which means everytime you install a new PC or using another but still keeping your ID, you need to copy it manually. Ubisoft said that, "they still working on it". Not to mention if your game crashes in the middle, there's a chance you will have a corrupt save file, then you will have to start over.

  3. The always on DRM, like Arsetto Corsa.

Once upon a time, I bought the Assassin's Creed III Deluxe Edition on Steam. Steam provides you with 3 keys. One key is for UPlay directly and the other two you have to activate in-game. The catch is, that you can't paste in-game, so you have to type it in manually. But every time you type it in, submit the key and get the response that UPlay is currently not available (which is sadly common), the input field clears and you have to retype it in again, until it accepts your key.

It took me about 50 minutes to activate both keys.
