I still find Vagrant Story's graphics amazing. edit : they truly mastered the PSX and its limitations, the textures are just perfectly chosen and placed...

Soooooo much agree. I hate when people say the graphics of some games are "dated". Of course they are dated, because it came out when it came out, and it can be today, it can be 2001 or even 1994. But that does not mean they're ugly or and hence the game is unplayable. To me the graphics are almost always great according to the date said game came out. Many people today would say Dark Forces looks crappy. I say it looks awesome for a game from 1994!

As long as the game is good the graphics doesnt really matter to me, also if people dont like the half life graphics they are also saying that any older game and most of actual indies are bad just for that without even having tried most of them

+this.
As someone said on another forum about FTL: It's amazing what you can do with a good concept, game play mechanic and SNES quality graphics...

Yeah, way to stereotype and tar >_>
For the record, my library is full of indie games and I still play early 90s 2D games like hell, but I think HL and other pre-source games suck balls. They look like crap even compared to contemporary games, and certainly like crap when seen next to actually good games from the period that were done well enough they look good today, in modern resolutions, because the artist thought ahead. See Breath of Fire IV or Homeworld, both look sharp and crisp in HD resolution despite pixelated textures because 3D models were actually good.

I'm not really one for nostalgia, graphics are pretty important to me, and I definitely think that all other things being equal, if one game has better graphics, that's the better game.
I'm not saying I won't play a good game if it has bad graphics though, but good graphics are never a bad thing imo.

"one game has better graphics, that's the better game."
Can't they both just be good games?

"all other things being equal, if one game has better graphics, that's the better game."
That means if they are the exact same game but one has better graphics, then the one with better graphics is the better game. (In my opinion).

Honestly, I love old 2d graphics and modern, well-done 3d graphics. The one thing I don't love is old 3D graphics. That being said, sometimes those kind of games have a sort of charm to them, and a feeling of solidity... if anyone gets me

More or less this.
And about that 'sometimes' part, can't say it's like that for me.

I like Duke Nukem's 3D graphics and Abe's Oddysee is another game I love.

I'd take Colin McRae Rally 2 over DiRT 3 any time! Plus, old Resident Evil games are amazing. Walking on photos FTW xD
On the other hand, the only thing I'm sorry for is not having played Silent Hill 1 in its time, because now I find the graphics really off-putting and unimmersive :/

Well its not the graphics that bother me but comfort to play, you are much less likely to stuck in the floor or in the corner, interaction with ladders and objects are way better now, awkward jumps that sometimes ruined my game experience and such things. But i have a huge list of old games that have these flaws and i love them, and this list is much smaller for modern games.

Better graphics = More immersion.
Thats how I see it.

Obviously, but it does help, I have been playing games since 8 bit, but really it can add, so can good sound/music.
Thats not to say older games weren't immersive, some were for sure.

If the graphics are appropriate to the gameplay, it doesn't matter one splat.
I love good games with old graphics, I love good games with new graphics, I love good games.

I also love the graphics of even older games. For example, the first Unreal was also amazing in it's times, and I gladly take the game out to play.
Also, graphics doesn't necessary makes a game good. For example, AC Black Flag: It has good graphics, but it doesn't changes the fact, that the game itself is very boring.

Graphic levels should have stayed at late 90s/early 00s levels so more non-indie games could have had actual innovation. imo
Graphics being great at the cost of gameplay was not worth it to me. (though games with both great gameplay and graphics are awesome, most companies (looking at you: EA, Activision, Capcom, Ubisoft and Microsoft Studios) just keep milking the same thing over and over to avoid the budget costs of making a totally new game.)

Okay, the comparison to end all arguments:
Final Fantasy VII vs. Final Fantasy XIII
Which has the obviously better graphics?
And now tell me which game you enjoyed more, or just plainly which game is better?
Case closed.

I know, I wasn't completely serious. Still, I wanted to show on two games in one franchise, that pretty graphics doesn't mean the game is more enjoyable than a game with older graphics. I always see the graphical quality as a bonus to the overall game experience, to which the gameplay comes first for me.

imo the clunky 90's graphics give the game an unique identity, atmosphere and feeling of their own, the same way a movie doesn't have to be in full color to be good. I'm not replaying the cliché point of graphic doesn't matter (since i was countered pretty hard on this one), but it's up to both the developer's direction and the players' interpretation.

I finished System Shock 2 recently, and loved every bit.

So, there was a thread where someone said that they didn't like the graphics of Half-Life, and many people agreed. So I wanted to make this thread so that we could PRAISE the wonderful graphics of games like this. I don't know about you, but I would rather play the original than a graphically enhanced update. Heck, I put Day of Defeat on my wishlist instead of Day of Defeat: Source, since Day of Defeat uses the graphics of the Half-Life engine. If you take a look at my library, you will see that I have Half-Life, Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life: Blue Shift, Counter-Strike, and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, all of which use the Half-Life engine. And on my wishlist are Deathmatch Classic and Day of Defeat, 2 more games that use the Half-Life Engine. So do you guys love games with graphics such as the Half-Life Engine(Which I think were some of the best 3-D graphics of their time. I mean, just look at Triangle-boob Lora Croft), or do you hate them so much that you will spend the extra money just for the updated graphics version?
TL;DR I love games that have crappy 3-D graphics, how about you?
